Which of those creators are the fan favourites?

I'm sure Orlando and Van Lente have their fans from their work at DC and Marvel.
At least it's not Birthquake 2.0. It's VH-2y but not AS bad as VH-2.

Tens and tens of fans all over the tri-state area, I’m sure.ManofTheAtom wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 4:39 pmI'm sure Orlando and Van Lente have their fans from their work at DC and Marvel.

Orlando and I used to be connected on Facebook. I'm still connected to Van Lente there.Chiclo wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 4:53 pmTens and tens of fans all over the tri-state area, I’m sure.ManofTheAtom wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 4:39 pmI'm sure Orlando and Van Lente have their fans from their work at DC and Marvel.

I don't understand why you doubt the existence of their fanbase. They've been around for a while.

I do not recognise Orlando’s name.
Van Lente. The Eddie Van Halen of the original VEI Beatles. Or, as I described him on the OTV podcast “the guy who they bring in on a book right before I drop it.” He wrote Magnus that time that Dynamite (who still sucks) tried to counterfeit Valiant with the Gold Key characters. I guess he was hanging out in the bargain bin that Alien was looking for creators in.

X-O sounds exactly like the last series with Cloonan, Space fantasy barbarian. 'All-New' Harbinger looks like its really leaning into trying to be X-Men-lite. Think I'll have to pass on these.

dude, what is happening to harbinger? who are even those characters on that cover? legit question.

I also reacted to that. Some of these characters can not live the normal teenage life that was part of the old Harbinger stories.syzhang28 wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:15 am dude, what is happening to harbinger? who are even those characters on that cover? legit question.

I was SO looking forward to Harbinger finally coming back with this new Valiant Beyond iteration.syzhang28 wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:15 am dude, what is happening to harbinger? who are even those characters on that cover? legit question.
And reading the synopsis and seeing this team… all of my excitement has completely dissipated.
Nothing against Van Lente. He’s a great writer. But when I heard Harbinger was coming back in the new “Beyond” form I was hoping for a great return to basics.
And now I’m just sad.

Steve Orlando is not what I would consider a good writer, I have a pile of his comics because he has written 2099 comics for Marvel and I am a big Marvel 2099 fan, he is not good a writing dialogue, often dialogues written by him feels like one person talking with oneself. And none of the stories from him that I have read really built up to anything, it's just introduce new characters and the stakes don't get higher and the intensity change.

That sounds like most modern comics I've tried to read.Travesty wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 1:32 pm Steve Orlando is not what I would consider a good writer, I have a pile of his comics because he has written 2099 comics for Marvel and I am a big Marvel 2099 fan, he is not good a writing dialogue, often dialogues written by him feels like one person talking with oneself. It does say that he studied the Russian language in college. A lot of Russian literature can be described that way.Travesty wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 1:32 pm Steve Orlando is not what I would consider a good writer, I have a pile of his comics because he has written 2099 comics for Marvel and I am a big Marvel 2099 fan, he is not good a writing dialogue, often dialogues written by him feels like one person talking with oneself. Ok, this wiki article would suggest to me that he has a fanbase. Maybe he is a fan favourite, just not to any fans I know and discuss such things with.ManofTheAtom wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 10:20 pmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_OrlandoChiclo wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 5:27 pm I do not recognise Orlando’s name.

These look like they are being marketed towards the 10 and under crowd. Is that the intent?

I doubt it. They seem to be more aimed at fans of '90s Marvel.tford1972 wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 5:29 pm These look like they are being marketed towards the 10 and under crowd. Is that the intent?

Re: EXCLUSIVE: New Valiant Beyond Titles Featuring Fan-Favorite Creators
Looks like Archer is replacing Stancheck. VEI and DMG just nuked Petey into oblivion to where I wouldn't want to touch him either. If you can't keep running with Harada pretending to be dead and the ways that character can go, this is next best thing. Maybe Harbinger just really wasn't an IP meant to be built around the Sting character since even VEI version (druggie with hipster friends) wasn't that enthralling.
It's jarring, but it's a new starting point. I'm going to dive in with Harbinger and give it a chance. No two ways about it. The Renegades needed a radical shake-up because that stuff has been poop.
I see some Beast and Jubilee from 90s XMen inspiration, but we got a nice visual dynamic now (which Harbinger has lacked even in its best iterations) that actually may convince someone with no knowledge of Valiant to pick up an issue and look at it. Make the stories fun, make the characters cool, and keep modern politics out of it and you can have a fun comic that gets some attention. It ain't our Valiant, but perhaps it can be something new that can survive.
X-O also looks nice visually, but I'll be waiting to hear how storytelling goes before I buy that.
