Don't see many of them ever. Are they very strict with their grading? I've been thinking of sending a few things off lately that seem to me to be in perfect shape. Just wondering.

So now I'm wondering

What issues do you think are in perfect shape that you want to send in? THen we can tell you if its worth your time

To answer your question... there has been very few issues of valiant that have come back higher than a 9.8. Someone on this board, I think it was maggy who got a unity platinum 10. I don't think there is any pre-unity 9.9's or 10 to date.

Yeah there have been 3 valiant 10s. Rai 0 XO 0 and Unity Plat. greg has the first 2 10s. I dont know about any 9.9's but you can easily check the census, or I am sure greg of ckb will be along shortly to set us straight...Ricomortis wrote:OK...CACTVS wrote:Don't see many of them ever. Not from experience, since I've only submitted golden age books to CGC...
but from the numbers, the "odds" of getting 9.9 or 10 are very low for pre-Unity books.
None have been found thus far, but I'm sure there will be some eventually.
(When it is found, it will be the first in over 3,000 CGC slabs for pre-Unity books.)
For Unity-or-later books, 9.9 and 10 occur in 1-out-of-92-books slabbed.
(The use of pre-screening keeps a lot of lower-than-perfect-grade, probably 9.4 and lower, books off of the census.
Easily 1-out-of-100+ "tough to find", if pre-screened books were counted.)
If you rule out books with a chromium cover (since they seem to be more popular 9.9 and 10 recipients),
then the odds of getting a 9.9 or 10 on any Valiant book is currently 1-out-of-500-books slabbed
(...again, not counting the books that didn't reach a pre-screened grade).
Will there be more 9.9 and 10? Definitely.
Would I bet on them being a book that I personally submit? Nope.
(But I'll gladly bid on any pre-Unity 9.9 or 10 that does show up.)

Here's the CGC anti-noob rule:
If you think you have 9.9s and 10s in your collection, those absolutely perfect books, you don't.
No one outside of the CGC offices has any idea what it takes for any book to get any grade, but that goes triple for 9.9s and 10s. The standards are unpublished. We have heard that things like fingerprints are looked for. Do you look at all your books under a black light trying to find fingerprints on the inside of the back cover? Have your books been handled by people with socks on their hands since they came out of the original cases?
Anything above 9.4 and it's pretty much luck. Feel free to gather 100 books and pre-screen them at 9.9. Better yet, stright submit them. It keeps CGC in business.

One caveat... the "one-in-a-million" chance...ckb wrote:Here's the CGC anti-noob rule:

Last year, a woman who had never used CGC sent me an email about
having a perfect copy of Unity 0 Red. I suggested that she should sent
it to CGC before selling it on Ebay, because a truly nice copy (9.8+)
would be more profitable for her if it was CGC graded before sold.
She sent it in, and got a 9.9.
So, it's definitely impossible to get 9.9+ on your first CGC submission of early Valiant books.
(Except when it's possible.)

Heh... two words - Jason Ewert.Rufusharley wrote:Has anyone ever taken a comic out of the CGC holder and resubmited it and gotten a higher grade? I think that would be a very expensive endeavor, but if you feel strongly about a book (and what to take the chance) i could see someone doing it. Anyone heard of anyone being sucessful in this?

Regrading/Resubmitting is a common practice with older (or extremely valuable) books...
Currently, there's a big debate regarding the use of "pressing",
which can remove wrinkles or a spine roll by force of weight/pressure.
Many books which are pressed will look better than before,
so the possibility of a higher grade is increased.
Additionally, there's always the scam artists who trim rough edges
in hopes of obtaining higher grades... hoping their trimming won't be caught.
I would guess that regardless of a book's age, there's always a +/- factor
to a CGC grade... that is a CGC 9.6 might be a 9.4 or a 9.8 on another day.
Some people have been known to open the case and resubmit a 9.6 trying for a 9.8.
Sometimes, it works... sometimes, it doesn't.
In the long run, I believe that there will be a closer value between 9.6 and 9.8 for most books,
mainly because the differences are so slight that the value gap shouldn't be so great.
(Now, the question is... will the 9.8 values fall closer to 9.6....
or will the 9.6 values rise closer to 9.8?)
