Things are starting to heat up on the sales floor, good thing I grabbed one of these for 75 at the beginning of the year:

http://cgi.ebay.com/AMAZING-SPIDER-MAN- ... dZViewItem

The normal version of 300 is now hitting 75-100 bucks easily

Other Keys to look out for on the cheap

Marvel Team Up 141
Marvel Age 12
Peter Parker Spectacular Spidey 90
Secret Wars 8
Amazing Spider-Man 252, 298, 299

The price that chromium went for is crazy. I think I bought mine off ebay for about $10, just 2 years ago.

If anyone wants to pay me $400 for it... let me know!

Now is definitly not the time to be looking for these books, especially on ebay, at this point u might as well look at your LCS for a copy, might be more reasonable, which is sad

I wouldn't call any of them "Key" books with the exception of Spidey 300. It seems like Venom is becoming his defining villan for the new generation of comic collectors.

You would have had to buy yours off of eBay about 6 years ago for it to have been $10, or it was a BIN. They've been $75+ since mid 2001. :)

They were first sold for $10 each in 1999. Crazy, huh?

And rightly so...

It's the most brilliant Spidey villain ever.

EVER.

Even moreso than GG.

I may have just gotten a good deal then . I remember thinking to myself... ""Gee... $10 for a reprint of a book I already have?"

Can someone explain to me what the published order of appearances is for the black costume in the 80's and how long the outfit lasted? I'm a little confused as to which comic was the first appearance since I wasn't collecting comics at the time and don't have those issues.

I seem to recall some controversy about the first appearance of the black costume, but...

Secret Wars #8 was the first appearance.
Amazing Spider-Man 252 was the first appearance in the mainstream title. I think Secret Wars #8 beat ASM 252 to the street by about a week?

The red costume re-appeared in ASM 300.

Supposedly its like this March 84:

Marvel Age 12 - 1st mention/appearance in sketches

2 months later May 84:

Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man 90 - Appearance on Last few pages
Amazing Spider-Man 252 - 1st cover Appearance
Marvel Team-Up 141- Supposedly 1 week later than 252

7-8 Months Later December 84:

Secret Wars 8

Yeah that makes sense. From what I understand the heroes were shown disappearing and returning from Secret Wars in their own titles at the beginning of the story and the miniseries filled in what happened to the heroes while they were gone. So Secret Wars 8 is the origin not the first published appearance. Thanks guys.

I looked up the covers. It looks like he wears it all the way up to Amazing Spiderman 300 with a brief break in the middle (let me guess, he got freaked out that he's wearing a living costume with a mean streak?) .

Yeah, he basically gets rid of the symbiote in #258 and from there he switches back and forth from red-and-blue and a cloth version of the black costume.

I can't recall what other issues he wears the alien costume (not counting the cloth version)... I recall a Marvel Team-Up with Iron Man in it, and the stories in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN where Silvermane, Cloak and Dagger, and The Answer are involved. Also, an issue of Transformers.
