Found this article while browsing the net. It makes some very good points about the entire speculation boom/bust of the 90's and makes several refs to VALIANT, so I thought I'd post it. Here it is:

Sounds pretty accurate to me, about the way I remember it.

If it wasnt for the image and valiant boom, I may not have met Hobo years before we worked together.

Intelligent article. Here's one of many Valiant quotes:

"They were mad at Valiant for lying to them about their collectibility, which was untrue - Valiant never tried to do anything but make good comics. The rumor of collectibility was a misguided self-fufilling prophecy. But Valiant felt the pain just the same."

And Deathmate is prominently mentioned.

Like a walk down memory lane. I remember getting out of comics and switcthing to Magic at the Dark expansion. Was getting real tired of the comic industry at the time and it took me 10 years before i bought another comic book. :o Good artical. :thumb:

That was pretty much my timeline too... got out of comics and into Magic just after The Dark tho... they were hard to find on the East Coast. Best thing I can say about that... at least, when I got out of Magic, I was able to make a boatload of $$$ selling the cards... not so with comics.

That must have been a very common path for some people, considering they often sold them at the LCS as well. I know that's about the time I got in to magic.

This is an interesting article. This is essentially my junior high and high school years. I was all about the Valiants, and I got really excited over multiple covers and stuff, because I was 12. Luckily I got all my Solar back issues before the boom REALLY hit... except number 2. I remember forking out $20 for a copy of number 2 back at some convention in LA that my friend's dad took us to. I thought I was CRAZY to spend that much, but I REALLY wanted it.

When cards came out I thought they were really cool, and I bought a bunch. Then I realized... these are just cards. Then I realized that the comics I was buying weren't that good. I even lost interest in Sandman. The World's End storyline couldn't keep me hooked.

Then I realized I wanted to try to play football in high school and be a cool guy and get all the girls (mistake). When I found out I wasn't going to be cool, I met some geekier friends and learned about this "magic" thing. played that until I lost interest because of girls again (this time it worked, and I was dating one of the most gorgeous girls at our school).

It's cool to read about the business and collecting side of what was going on as I was growing up.

I dugg it.

Brought back lots of memories.

Memories about all these books being so expensive... and now I can buy them indiscriminately by the pound on eBay. As much for a long box as you would have paid for a single comic back then. Like the long box I got in the mail today - almost half of it was Unity issues $19.99 before shipping. It's like the guy knew I love Valiant.
