What's up with CGC?

Is CGC behind schedual or what? My books should have come in today, but did'nt. I checked their site & it showed that they are shipping books mailed in on 1-13. So much for the 20 day turn around.

Call them and ask if your books have been graded yet.

I heard that the "hold up" has been in the encapsulation step,
after the books have already been graded...
so you might be able to find out the grades even though
you won't get the books for weeks.

Gee, was it not too long ago that MOST members of this board bemoaned and "hated" CGC?

I remember when I first saw CGC come out in Wizard magazine years ago. I was thinking "Oh, great. Another way to make more money."

But I have to admit, I am all for CGC graded comics. Especially after being duped many a time on eBay with "NM/MT" advertised comics that arrived in F/VF conditon.

I have my "reading" copies of my favorite's to read, & then I have them in high grade CGC also.

You know, I'm almost hesitant to send my own books to CGC
because I just haven't seen many of mine that look as sharp and clean
as the 9.6s and 9.8s that I have seen in CGC holders.

What if all those books I bought as NM are actually 9.2s and 9.4s?

Now, I don't agree with the current "trend" of paying hundreds of dollars
for BRAND NEW off-the-shelf books in CGC 9.8 and up...
But CGC for books from the 1960s? Absolutely...
Show me a seller who undergrades and I'll show you 100 who overgrade.

Ebay is great, but anyone could become a "used car salesman" when
they describe the very items they're trying to sell with their own bias.
What price should I pay for a book that MIGHT be Near Mint?
Obviously that price should be lower than the price for a book that is,
according to an "authority" that many people accept... IS Near Mint.

With that being said... I still think that Valiant books are a little "too new"
to be sent to CGC (except for the most key issues).
There are too many CGC graded Turok 1 and Bloodshot 1 comics for my taste.

I'll usually get 1 or 2 9.8's, & 3 or 4 9.6's out of every ten Valiant books I send in to CGC. Eternal Warrior Golds usually come back lower than you think they would for some reason. 9.6 is the highest I've ever received on the EW's.

I should be getting two X-O Golds back with this next bunch, & if these are'nt 9.8, I don't know what would be...

The way I see CGC is that it is as close to a level playing field as we can get right now. While it is sad to see that the competition hasn't gotten a following, it is great to see a company so widely accepted. You now do not have to be an "expert" in comics to know you are getting a high-grade book. When I first started collecting I was taken advantage of many times from dealers passing their books on me as "NM" when they were more like fine. I have an Ironman 55 that I bought as NM. I would grade it as Fine minus with the grading knowledge I have today.

A drawback is that it does make CGC comics a "fake" investment. What I mean by that is the books that are CGC within a few month of release. I do not see these books holding their values, as they are not realistic. Which is a better investment buying 100 (un slabbed NM) copies Rai 5 or 1 copy of Rai 5 CGC 9.8? I would put my money on the 100 copies. I think there are many people out there who do not see or understand this. They think a CGC book means a grantee on their "investment"

I think time will prove this wrong. However, I also think time will prove how hard certain books are to get in high grade. Like Harbinger 1 for example. I am sure there are other books out there from the past 20 years that are hard to get in 9.6 or better. You can look at the census on CGC’s website and get some idea of how hard a grade is to get. Of course many recent books are being sent in and screened and not graded if under 9.6 for example. This will distort the data.

I called CGC today to check on the status of my comics. They are currently running 3 weeks behind schedual. They received my order on Feb 4th & customer service said that the issues have not even been graded yet. So plan on a 2 month turn around time for right now....
