Valiant Penguins sculpted by Sean Chen
svair wrote:
Here is a very brief story about these penguins

Sean has been sculpting character penguins for a few years...after "March of the Penguins" came out people started to show more interest in the penguins...some of Sean's earliest penguins were accessorized with Top Hats, Canes, I-Pods etc...

Sean and myself would meet up in the city and just talk about different ideas...After showing me the penguins I asked about character penguins, which he proceeded to pull out of his bag....

they were all prototypes...but I knew right there I wanted 1 of each...
and when I saw the Solar..it had to be mine!...

I then discussed with Sean the possibility of making some more Solar penguins for the VALIANTfans.com members, as I was pretty sure a few members would be interested..

That night I posted a pic and asked if anyone was interested in purchasing one...

that started the ball rolling....

Having the Solar penguin was great, but I wanted to try and make it somehow more functional then just collecting dust on a shelf...
I came up with the idea of a VALIANT Penguin Unity boardgame...

This is why the "Unity" theme was chosen for the penguins....however, that is not to say we will not stray from this theme...

We've committed to approximately 11-12 different penguins which will finalize the series...so perhaps some VALIANT related penguin villains (or villuins) will be mixed into the lineup... :hm:

There is a large Unity base in the works for the penguins, at present Sean has displayed his character penguins, at shows, on small iceberg's....I'll try to get some pictures soon...

now onto how they are made...

1- which penguin to choose..
2- Anthony has sketched out most of the penguins for ideas
3- the original penguin needs to be sculpted
4- a silicone mould needs to be made from this penguin, consequently destroying the original penguin, so you cannot go back after this
5- resin is poured into the mould. each resin pouring slowly destroys the mould usually after about 35-36...
6- they are allowed to set and prime'd for paint
7- each penguin is hand painted with approx. 2 coats of each color
8- a clear coat is added
9- they are signed and numbered on the bottom
10- boxes are purchased and prepared with labels
11- certificates are drawn up...
12- they are packeaged and shipped out

as you can see there are many steps involved and only a few can be made each week.....

these times must fit in between personal and business commitments...

I'm quite certain you can add former Acclaim Comics Editor, Omar Banmally to the list of XO statue owners.

Let Omar know I'll take it :P

Actually, tell him I'm still holding out for a Solar Voyeur. He sent me a complete set back in the days sans Solar. I still have his signed note that came with the Voyeurs -- Good stuff :thumb:

It'd be neat to see similar promos or gold books in the new Valiant.

I agree, it would be cool to see VEI do somthing similar to the voyeurs.

Didn't Dynamic Forces have plans to make a Magnus statue? It's a shame that never came about because the Dark Horse one is hardly a suitable companion for my Dynamic Forces Solar. :P

I am carrying on Trent's legacy by taking care of his #6 Solar Penguin...

If you want to change that or not, I'll leave it up to you.

I know DF is none too popular around here right now, but speaking to quality only, the DF Solar is infinitely better than Dark Horse's offering.

Sean Chen's solar statue only went to the first 15 or so people on the list. I'm not sure what the cutoff number was, but I know I didn't get one. I think the mold broke down early or something.

If I remember correctly, that X-O (in the picture) was painted by a professional within the last few years. Mine looks similar, but the paint is not as shiny.

I'll try and get pictures on Monday, as the statue is at my office.
