Sending my PGX's to CGC

Post by TheGreatSatan »

I have these 3 PGX 9.9's.

Ninjak #1 PGX 9.9
Shadowman #0 PGX 9.9
Unity #1 Platinum PGX 9.9

I'm thinking of sending them to CGC while in their PGX cases and have them graded again. They should hopefully come back as 9.8's. What do you think I should do?

You have to break them out of the PGX cases yourself. CGC will not do it, -period-, or so I have been told.

The Plat is certainly worth it. Maybe even the Shadowman if it is a newstand copy.

I wouldn't send them in the cases. Even if they WILL break them out of their cases, why take even a chance at bias? Yes, I know, the process is designed to be blind....but seriously.

"Hey, Steve, you see that Unity Plat that came in yesterday in a PGX 9.9 case? I damn near laughed myself silly at that one."

Not worth the risk.

I called CGC and they said it didn't need to be removed and I didn't need to send a permission letter for them to remove it. I'd much rather that they open the cases. I'm sure that they're far better at it than I am and that way there's no risk of me damaging them. Anyway, they go out today!

I saw the discussion on the CGC boards. I really think this policy has changed over the years. I remember an old board discussion about it and it came down to liability. What happens if they damage the book getting it out of the holder? It can certainly happen. Although with the 'pillow' style inner wells (that I think PGX uses) it is a much easier prospect.

BTW, don't neglect to consider ZWH's point about bias/perspective. The graders are humans.

I also plan on sending some PGX books into the CGC some day. One I am really interested in is the Solar 10 in PGX 9.8.

For the record, if they were PGX 10.0's I would NOT send them

I really think you are putting far too much weight on the opinion of a man in a garage in Eugene, OR.

I would never and have never submitted to PGX before, but if I bought a PGX 10.0, I would've bought it for that reason.

To send to CGC? You'd probably get back a 9.6-9.8. Likely a 9.8. Maybe....MAYBE....a 9.9.

Certainly not a CGC 10.

And hopefully, you would have paid the CGC 9.8 PRICE for the book, not the deluded fantasy prices that PGX hawkers all seem to have. I saw one guy....seemed to be a nice guy (good_ol_br), but was trying to sell a PGX 9.8 Avengers Forever #1 Kang variant...was asking $150 for it....noted that GPA was "$200"....I kindly pointed out that GPA is for CGC ONLY (at this time), and he responded with "well, I have to COMPLETELY disagree, because (launches into absurd defense of PGX and their validity on the market)"

Eventually, he relisted it at $100....then $60....finally, at $19.99.....which is what it sold for.

Sad, deluded, money throwing away people. I TRIED to explain it to him, but no, he knew more, and had to "prove" his point by throwing good money after bad....and then he gave me this whole sarcastic sob story about how he's a nice guy, and he has to make a living, too, and that maybe he should just GIVE the book away since it's "clearly worthless"....

I chuckled and responded "look....I'm sorry that you don't understand how the market works, but that's not MY (or the comics community's) responsibility...I'm trying to HELP YOU, so that you don't throw money away for nothing....but it IS YOUR money, and if you want to toss it away, by all means, have at it."

I genuinely feel bad for people who have been suckered because they refused to take the time to educate themselves on the realities of this absolutely cutthroat market.....but that's not MY fault, nor is it the COMMUNITY'S fault...it's THEIR fault.

"I'm selling this (insert formerly hot comic here), and I paid (insert ridiculous hot price here), so I'm listing it at (insert absurdly unrealistic in the current market price here), because I'm just trying to protect my investment."

Oops.

I've seen them PGX and even worse CGG prices. But at the same time, I think any high graded book is never worth what these people are willing to pay. Like $1500 for a Spidey 300 9.8?? Stupid.

I didn't realize they were in Eugene, OR.

I know a guy there. Should I ask him if he knows where it is/see if he can get pictures?

If you go to google earth and do the address on the satelite map it's clearly a residence. At least it was in the past.

As I understand it, they are distant cousins on the mother's side.
