Deathmate fan club
I will start this thread in honor of RQB's custom signature line.
What was your favorite thing about Deathmate and why? (Be nice all you haters...)
What do you remember about Deathmate when it was first released?
I remember the hype being cranked up to a fever pitch for this one. Image was HUGE! at the time with legions of new fans and Valiant was still basking in the glow of their incredible success with Unity. I remember the disappointment with the delivery delays from the Image guys - was it Deathmate Red that Liefeld drew? - really messing up the flow.
I reread the entire run earlier this year. Opinions differ. I thought it was OK. (That's for you RQB )

Deathmate was my first exposure to comics outside DC and Marvel, so it will always hold a special place in my collection as it opened me to experience something other than Superman and Spider-Man.
My favorite issue was definitely the Black one, which I liked a lot.
Since I got into it late in the run, I was lucky enough to not experience the long delay between issues, so I was able to pick up everything in one buy except for the prologue, which came out a few weeks later (again, pure luck considering the delays I've heard about since it came out).
I liked how the issues were colored and not numbered.
Out of all the characters in the event, the ones that interested me the most were Prophet, Union, Gen 13, and a guy in a red suit whose name I forget... Solarman or something, not sure.
At that time, Wildstorm had released a Union mini series, so I bought it.
There was no Prophet comic or mini I was aware of, so I wasn't even to get anything with the character.
As for Gen 13, I was all set to get it, when then I saw the Pitt in a cover and decided not to.
Then there was the guy in the red pajamas. At that point his series was around issue 27, so I got that as well as the previous two issues, 25 and 26.
Some time after that, there was this thing called Chaos Effect, a crossover like Zero Hour that involved all the VALIANT characters and comics, so I got that but that was it, after it was over I kept getting the red pajamas-guy comic and dropped the others... but a couple of months later I did the math and though, "if I could afford to get the whole thing once, why not keep getting them every month", and that's how the obssession began
Around the time of Chaos, VALIANT also released the Unity trades as well as the Alpha & Omega trade. Those two were enough to hook me to the VALIANT Universe.
Ironically enough, the reason I got the Unity trade was because I had found out that it involved Erica Pierce, which had been in a DeathMate preview that involved Prophey and Solar.
The reason I got the trade was in the hope that it would say HOW Prophet and Solar met.
The irony was that I found out the answer at the 94 SDCC when I found the DeathMate preview for 50 cents.
I did NOT have to spend what I did on the Unity trades (like 10 dollars each!) to find out how Solar and Prophet met, all it cost me was 50 cents, lol

Not the best book to have in mint either even if it is the defense version.worldsbestcomics wrote:I just remembered. When Deathmate came onto the market, I was losing the faith big time with all comic companies. So my memory of it is very jaded.
Mega print runs, mega hype and the feeling that these comic creators were stiffing the comic fan.
On a positive note the artwork looked okay, story......I have no idea. Maybe I need to have an accident and get hospitalised and read them.

Re: Deathmate fan club
As my two favorite books for inexplicable reasons at the time were H.A.R.D Corps and Wild C.A.T.S it was cool to see Hard Cats and Wild Corps. I was 13 at the time.
I still do have a weakness for early 90s image books so Deathmate never bothered my reading sensibilities like it did for others.

I liked the Black book a great deal. The story was good and I loved the art. I enjoyed the others enough, but they didn't really stand out.
I remember being really excited about the crossover because it was an epic inter-company promotion and I liked both companies a good deal. It seemed so big, and it had some nice art, but the story wasn't as big as what I had imagined it to be. I seeing different companies play with each other's characters, and while this may not have been the first one I read, it was certainly the biggest, so Deathmate will always have a special place in my heart.
