I have been to the NYCC (that's New York Comic Con) both times it has been held and let me tell you all something... IT BLOWS THE NATIONAL BIG APPLE AWAY!! At least in terms of floor space, venue, artists, guests, vendors, promoters and organization, anyway. If those things are important to you.
I know that John was getting good treatment from the Big Apple guys, that they gave him special Valiant reunion space last year, that they scheduled panels and space for him this year (which worked out only on a limited basis because they were half-azzed about it unfortunately), that they permitted him a guest list to bypass door fees, and that he has a friendship with Alan and others from Big Apple. And that is all fine, better than fine actually it was great.
However, that being said, the professionalism displayed by the NYCC as compared to the Big Apple guys is not comparable in my opinion. Mike Carbanaro puts on a great local show, "local" show. The NYCC guys are new to town but not new to putting on events. Their three day event is only two years old and, in my opinion, is at least on par with any Wizard show and is fast approaching Baltimore/Chicago levels. If they keep their forward momentum up, this show will be second only to San Diego in a few years. It is held in the biggest convention center here in NYC, the Javits. The guests and artists had their own floor last year, a convenient escalator ride away from the dealer/publishers floor and it was about 3/4 the size of the entire Big Apple main floor.
For you out of town guys, you don't know what a pleasure it will be for John to make the jump to the NYCC because then it will be worth the trip not just in terms of valiant-related stuff, but for the whole experience of a big con.
Kudos to John for getting in with the NYCC people; I look forward to being there in April no matter the level of valiant-ness to it, but John's added work will make it that much better.
Just my opinion, of course...

Definite maybe as well. I'd like to go, but it depends on plane ticket price, accomodations, time off from work, & the wifey. I will do all I can.k_c_collectibles wrote:Me as well. In contrast, it would also be one of the shortest posts I've ever made.

I realized as I was typing it that I needed some qualifiers in attempting to distinguish the Big Apple from the new kid on the block, the NYCC, because I didn't want to leave the impression that John's efforts at the BA haven't been appreciated because they have. It's just that "valiant at the NYCC" is going to be better, and that is without taking anything away from what has gone before because it's been plenty good.
Too much posting...feeling weak....must resist explication...

I went to the Javitz show last year and hung out for the weekend with John, Brian (chainnball),Woog, McGuire and the rest of the gang. I highly recommend it for a couple of reasons.
First, the show is really great and unlike the Big Apple shows, this show has reps and booths from all the major and most minor comic publishers with giveaways and exclusive stuff. Artists alley is as big if not bigger and this year will probably be better as the show is growing.
Second, one of the problems with doing things at the National in November is the NYC prices are pretty much at their peak. Now it's gonna be cold in February but I paid $225/night for my room in November and the same room in February cost me $100/night. Travel is also cheaper for the most part, although deals may be hard to find this year as airlines adjust for energy increases.
I am not sure if I'll be in for the show this year as I will be traveling with UNH Hockey for a couple away series this year and can only spend so much time away from home. I am also trying to see if I can work out San Diego in July, I just wish I could do it all.

They moved the show to mid-April this year, Mark.
