CGC census numbers - How tough is it to find a 9.8?

Post by greg »

The latest update to the CGC census includes books graded up to 12/16/2004.

Since I always compile the numbers and post them on my CGC Analysis site...
http://www.gregholland.com/CGC
...I figured I would also do some analysis of the Valiant books, in particular.

We already have the regular counts & totals page on ValiantComics.com:
http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/valiantcgc.asp

In addition to that...
Here's the list of all Valiant books graded at least 20 times,
and ordered by the lowest percentage of 9.8's (or better) on the census.

Solar, Man of the Atom 10 - (4.55%) - 4 out of 88 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher
Harbinger 1 - (6.48%) - 7 out of 108 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher

Shadowman 1 - (52.50%) - 42 out of 80 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher
X-O Manowar 3 - (55.56%) - 20 out of 36 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher
Solar, Man of the Atom 6 - (61.29%) - 19 out of 31 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher

X-O Manowar 0 - (90.32%) - 56 out of 62 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher

It's possible that these numbers are skewed anywhere that CGC pre-screening
has had an effect on the number of books under 9.8 condition.
In those cases, books grading below the minimum grade (usually 9.6 or 9.8)
would be returned ungraded, instead of slabbed and added to the census.

9.8s

Post by maggy »

While the percentages seem fairly high for some issues, it has to be kept in mind that only the very best issues are submitted in the first place. Also , the actual number graded that high is fairly small. For example, if the print run was 5,000 and the total number of 9.8s is 12, that's only .24%. I think Greg also brings up a good point about the pre screening.

Eternal Warrior 1 Gold Flat is not on the list because only 14 have been graded.
But... none of those 14 are CGC 9.8's and only 2 are 9.6's.

Silly, that's not what I meant, but ok...I gots ta do the math on my own:

A&A #0 Reg - (62.5%) - 5 out of 8 submissions are 9.8 or higher.

A&A #0 Gold - (14.29%) - 2 out of 14 submissions are CGC 9.8 or higher

There. ;)

Boy are THOSE numbers screwy. :)

I am assuming that most of those 9.8's are owned by people here. I have some of them and I have started working on getting all the Pre-Unity and Unity books in 9.8. Has anyone tried or come close?

Hmmm, If we ask Greg nicely maybe the site can have a Valiant CGC/CGG inventory. Title, grade, even serial numbers. Some of these books might be nice to keep track of.
I don't know if anyone here is close to having all 9.8s on all Pre-unity or premium books but I'd put my money on Aug002... if he would ever speak up.

Yes, I'm very close. Time for me to take a picture with an update. My set is premiums + pre-unity, and some odd/ends.

Awesome!! That is one of my favorite "B character" comics. I found a real nice #1, but it wouldn't get a 9.8.

Did you buy all those already slabbed or did you submit some yourself?

Unless you bought them a few years back, that must've been a pretty penny!! You could get some SERIOUS cheese for those books!! :thumb:

Hey, thanks for the compliments guys, truly :thumb:

The ONLY book that was mine from my youth  and submitted by me was IF#1

I was lucky enough to know a few people in this hobby that knew of my affection for Iron Fist. From about...2000 to 2002 my quest to complete a IF#1-15 run in ultra HG was hatched :D I was ultimately doing this because I felt the IF run of books were BY FAR the 2nd best Claremont/Byrne run ever created, and were totally underpriced at the time.

At first, I had the entire run in CGC NM+9.6...which quite frankly was awesome, and good enough. However, a dealer I knew had submitted some IF books he had bought from a super HG Bronze run. He called and informed me that 5 IF books had come back 9.8 grades...and do I want to upgrade :o

Sooooooooooooo...I did, and the quest continued..until the end :D I bought my Iron Fist# 14 9.8 3 months back (had delayed for a fair price) for the sum of $1,450.00 8-)

That completed my IF 9.8 run...so, that is the history folks, bought them all already graded except #1...which I bought at The Forbidden Planet in NYC back in 1980 for the sum of $10.00

Anyway, sorry to all that only want Valiant talk, my bad for digressing this post
