Josiah Torrent and Sarah Boniface: Jack's Parents

Post by ManofTheAtom »

I was just reading Shadowman #20 for the wiki.

It says that Josiah Torrent was a snake charmer that seduced Sarah, Jack's mother, with his powers.

Is the author telling us that Sarah was a snake? :hm: (that is, had attributes that would conform to the slang use of the term).

Maybe he charmed her with his "snake"? Or, he simply seduced her using dark powers.

Heh on the first part.

:hm: on the second. There was no indication that Josiah possessed real powers before he died. Snake charming is a scam.

Edit

Although, in the VU, there could be some truth to them.

He power was that he was a 'charmer' LOL..

Do we think that Jack in any way is a Harbinger?

Or maybe his father and mother were to some extent?

I don't think he's a Harbinger, but IF Josiah had any sort of power and Sarah had snake-like attributes (again, in reference to the slang term), then maybe he had something in him.

It would have been interesting to have explored the magical/mystical corner of the VALIANT Universe.

I took the 'powers' to be his charm. It would be interesting to find out if the author had a different meaning behind that comment.

Could be one of the ideas Shooter talked about in his reply to you.

I can't because the thread was deleted, but maybe Geomancer could.

Sure:

Subject: Question from a valiant fan

Mr. Jim Shooter,

As a long time fan of your work, thank you. I hope you do not mind a question you may or may not hear all the time.

If you were to be handed the reigns of the VALIANT characters once again in a new line of ongoing comics - would it be your personal preference to pick up on the existing continuity or would you prefer a reboot.

This question was brought to mind by the announcement that Larry Hama has been hired to reboot the GI Joe franchise.

I don't represent any kind of publication of any sort, and would hope to share your response with fellow members of the valiantfans.com community where I post under the handle of geomancer.

In any case, I hope I got the right address. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and even more so if you decide to indulge my curiosity. ~~~Andrew

Dear Andrew,

I don't mind answering questions. Thanks for caring about what I have to say. : )

I don't like most of what I've seen of what was done with the VALIANT characters after I left -- but some good things were done. There were also some good ideas that didn't fulfill their potential, or were handled poorly. I guess I'd do a "reboot" that was a sort of second edition of the VALIANT Universe up to and including UNITY, with better art (for the most part, we couldn't afford top-flight artists back then -- we had Don Perlin, kids right out of school and couple of guys who had burned their bridges at the big companies), some things improved and everything polished -- then go forward from there including everything that was good and leaving out the crass stupidities/bad things.

Larry Hama was the key figure in the development of the "new" G.I. Joe, though Archie Goodwin and I pitched in here and there, and, being EIC, I oversaw the whole thing. Larry's certainly the right guy to reboot it.

Be well,

Jim Shooter
