Great cover! The background gives it a classic look
while the expressions and coloring makes it contemporary.
The bottles of wine (not beer!) adds a nice touch.
It's not what I expected but I am pleasantly pleased.

Like what?
Odd thing is I kind of agree, but I find it charming. When I heard Golden was doing the cover, I took that for it meant: One of the great artists of our time was doing a VALIANT cover, and if you can't get BWS, Golden is not a bad option in the least (indeed when I considered a new A&A HC and was pretty BWS would have nothing to do with it, the two names that came to mind were Golden and Art Adams as optimal).
The cover is not mind-blowing, it's not what I expected at all, but as a VALIANT fan I dug it for the fact that it did see 'off' - because when I think of A&A that what I think of the duo - they are just a little 'off' and the facial expressions and the predicament kind of reflect that.
Now, if I knew nothing about VALIANT or A&A...I don't know, I'm not sure if the cover succeeds as a draw, at the very least it's certainly an interesting choice.
I think it is Armstrong's face. Seems a bit disproportionate. Kinda Disney-ish. He nailed Archer's face though.

I think it's because Armstrong looks "scared", which is not accurate for him...
Armstrong would look either "bored" or "focused" in a fight, but not scared.
