I though the number floating out there was in the million range. I do know this was a seriously hoarded book too. I knew a guy who owned a card shop and the only comic he ever bought was a case full of Spawn 1. His goal was to leave them polybagged in the case until he could retire off them.IanAlexavier wrote:Does anyone have the stats on just how many were actually made? I am not going to disagree that MHC charges outlandish prices. He does have a couple stores and the online site, so he is doing well. I know a bunch of you get his newsletter, and he does seem like a real nice guy. You have to respect he's been in the business for a long time. I imagine running a corporation like his isn't cheap, and when I see the prices on the site I remind myself that people are really paying for the convenience of finding that issue easily.

Yep, that's about the best way I've heard it described.tarheelmarine wrote:I am not going to disagree that MHC charges outlandish prices. And the thing that I have found is that his prices are in almost constant flux. I have seen the price on some books drop for a few days and then go right back up. My experience with MHC's grading is about 95% consistent and I spent over a $1,000 with them last year. My experience with Lone Star aka MyComicShop's grading is 50% or worse and you can guess how much money I spent with them last year. When I ordered from MHC, they had my items in stock 95% of the time. When I ordered from Lone Star aka MyComicShop, they had my items in stock about 70% of the time.

Friend of mine noticed the same thing. She decided she didn't like the looks of it and gave up on even considering MHC.geocarr wrote:And the thing that I have found is that his prices are in almost constant flux. another awesome Mile High deal. I won an Acclaim Reader in Fine condition from their eBay store.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0123407805
Of course once they got around to the "final processing", it was out of stock, and they refunded my money.
Ok, so who here got the Acclaim Reader off their site directly? Fess up!

They've done that to me so many times, I've just given up on MH altogether.

I have bought from Chuck before, Prices were greater than I really wanted to pay bt I got the issues I needed to finish several indy runs I was working on.
The comics that I got were not in the condition stated (not even close) A VF came as G and a NM came as a VG. I e-mailed MHC three times and they never got back to me. I finally disputed the charge with my cc company and they refunded me the amount of the purchase. about 2 weeks after that I get a phone call form MHC asking what is the deal as I received the comics there should not have been a problem (the guy I talked to was a POS) actually started to holler at me over the phone. I finally said enough and asked to talk to Chuck directly, he stated that Chuck would call me back. He never did therefore I have not ordered anything from MHC since (or until I get that phone call from Chuck)

I have never had any luck emailing MH. I honestly don't know why they even bother having an email address for problems.comicguy wrote:I have bought from Chuck before, Prices were greater than I really wanted to pay bt I got the issues I needed to finish several indy runs I was working on.

Last time I ordered from them, they got my order wrong and couldn't bother to email me. I've called before but their phone etiquette was lousy. It's just an overall poor business model and I'm shocked its still working for them after all these years.
I actually like Lone Star/MyComicShop. Perhaps since I never look for high grade stuff anyways, I'm always pleased with what I've gotten from them and my order is always correct. At this point, I've spent more with them then I ever did Mile High.
I have a decent size list of Image Comics, care if I send you my needs list ? Just the regular stuff, WildCATs, Stormwatch, Wetworks, Deathblow, The Darkness, The Wicked, Backlash, etc.turborip wrote:I sold a Spawn #1 for either a quarter or fifty cents recently. we sell about 4-5 copies of spawn #1 - 20ish a year, for anywhere from $8 - $2 each.
i bought a run of #1 - 100 last year for $100 and have pretty much resold the entire thing for over $2 an issue.
it's make my stomach turn, but i can't pass up the money.
as far as back issues go, to me, they are only worth what someone will pay for them. i price pretty much all our back issues at 50 - 70% off overstreet (gold/silver/bronze age excluded) just to move what we can. to me it's all free money, as it's been paid for over and over through the years, so we have nothing invested in them.

I just got in my box of Legacy books from Lone Star and go figure, one book was missing and my money refunded. I left positive feedback but in the comments section, tore them up by saying 'don't put a book up for auction that you don't have'. I have NEVER had a 100% complete order recieved from them... EVER. There is always something missing, not available or the wrong book. Now granted it has been less than 10 books that were fouled up but it's the fact of the matter is that they do not have a handle on their inventory just like MHC. I think that their back issue stock is SO HUGE that they really don't know WHAT they have do not list their books for the appropriate amount that said book should be selling for... but then agan, I also can't imagine having such a back issue stock to go through and keep changing the prices. Either hire more QUALIFIED people or half the Ebay store and focus on their website.turborip wrote:I actually like Lone Star/MyComicShop. Lone Star has been pretty consistant on grading (and I don't buy high end books from them either) but MHC has been WAY off. I once got a book from them that was 'NM' but when I got it, the cover was missing... I'm thinking that lowered the grade on the book that I purchased.

Very well put... but do you ever question Overstreet ? I think that some of their prices are whack. And I HATE it when I pick out a few books that are in the appropriate bin and marked with a price and then the joker pulls out Overstreet (NOT saying you guys run that way). Now when Overstreet was not listing Valiant, there was some smokin' deals to be made. "Well it's not listed in Overstreet, so I guess you can have it for cover." "oh come ON, dude. Valiant is SO DEAD, I'll give you a buck a book." "OK, thats cool.", "Say do you have a military discount.", "No, not really but how about 25% off, will that work ?", "Yeah, thats cool, THANKS you are an alright guy." Mmmmmm gold books.daydreamscomics wrote:as far as back issues go, to me, they are only worth what someone will pay for them. i price pretty much all our back issues at 50 - 70% off overstreet (gold/silver/bronze age excluded) just to move what we can. to me it's all free money, as it's been paid for over and over through the years, so we have nothing invested in them.

Yeah, that'll get him the company's money back. You have it, he has to be nice to you to get you to give it up to him, so he yells at you. Great negotiating technique! Receiving goods "not as described" is a valid reason to get the credit card company to refund your money. And forget about email, like everyone here has already said. They've got so many customers, they think they can afford to *SQUEE* off as many as they like because there are still people that buy into Chuck's "folksy" newsletters. That's comic book fans for you - leading with their hearts instead of with their heads.comicguy wrote:I e-mailed MHC three times and they never got back to me. The people that work at Mile High have the same attitude as guys that sell stuff out of the trunks of their cars. They're about as smart, too. It's too bad that they don't belong to the Better Business Bureau. Not that that'd change anything, but it'd be a nice come down for them to get complaints from a source they can't ignore.
