X-O MANOWAR – FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Page 1.

Splash Page: A Spider Alien warrior stands over the decapitated corpse of another Spider Alien warrior. The one standing is holding the decapitated one’s head. In the background is an audience of various types of Spider Aliens, cheering. Standing slightly apart from the crowd is a Spider Alien priest (tall-hat Spider Aliens, see X-O #0, p.1-4; scene ref: Rise of Lydia; Spider Alien warrior ref: Solar MOTA #7)
Caption Box: “Bonding ceremony, high Earth orbit, relative local time: Winter, 1589.”

Page 2.

Panel 1. Spider Alien Champion tosses head of loser away.

Panel 2. Spider Alien Champion reaching out to take a control ring from a suit of X-O armor. (see X-O #1 or #0 for detail)

Panel 3. Armor flows around Spider Alien Champion, forming into old-style X-O armor. (X-O #1-8 and #0 for armor ref.)

Panel 4. Spider Alien priest is speaking to the new X-O Champion.
WB Priest: “The longer you wear the ring the stronger your bond with the armor. It is slight at first but will eventually be unbreakable when you will it.”

Panel 5. New X-O champion turns to the Spider Alien audience, arms raised, as the priest looks on. The crowd appears to be cheering.

Panel 6. Close-up of control ring on upraised fist of X-O Champion. Glint of light coming off ring.

Page 3.

Panel 1. Same close-up, except now X-O ring is on a human hand/fist.

Panel 2. The next few panels are dream sequence – POV will be from eyes of ring-wearer (first-person). It should appear to be Aric is the person dreaming. In first panel, view is dreamer looking down at hands holding Visigoth sword and shield, high leather boots. (Image ref. provided).

Panel 3. Dreamer sees a T-Rex running toward him.
Thought balloon, Dreamer: “Lugh help me, a dragon!”

Panel 4. Dreamer is looking at sword in hand
Thought balloon, Dreamer: “I need a bigger sword … a better …”

Panel 5. Repeat last panel, but with an X-O gauntlet, an open hand and forearm, sword is gone.
Thought balloon, Dreamer “… weapon?”

Panel 6. (First person POV can be dropped now)
Aric’s clenched fist in the X-O gauntlet as the energy beam changes (it should be the only piece of the X-O armor Aric’s wearing. We can now see Aric’s face).
Thought balloon, Aric: “I know this.”

Panel 7. Aric turns and shoots T-Rex in the head. T-Rex’s head explodes.
Word balloon, Aric: “HO!”

Page 4.

Panel 1. Shot of Aric from waist-up, arms raised in triumph. (Aric’s wearing Visigoth armor and X-O gauntlet)

Panel 2. Close-up of Aric over his shoulder, looks shocked.
Word balloon (off panel) of new T-Rex: “RRRAAARH!”
Thought balloon, Aric: “Another dragon!”

Panel 3. A T-Rex in Roman Centurion armor looms over Aric as he’s turning to look back to the source of the roar.
(Image ref provided)

Panel 4. Energy beam shoots and bounces off T-Rex helmet.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Armor?”

Panel 5. T-Rex’s mouth opening wide from POV of person about to be swallowed.

Panel 6. An American Indian sits up, waking from the dream. This is Manteo, current Geomancer, and member of the Crotoan tribe. Only light source in the room is a low fire.
(Image Ref. for Manteo provided.)

Page 5.

Panel 1. Geomancer is up and starts to prepare his things for a long trip.

Panel 2. Geomancer’s wife wakes and looks groggy at him while he dresses in winter garb.
Word balloon, wife: “<Manteo? Is it time to wake?*>”
Word balloon, Geomancer: “<No. The moon is still high and the night is not yet half-over>”
Editorial note: “*Translated from Carolinian Algonquin dialect.”

Panel 3. Wife slumps back down into the pallet of furs.
Word balloon, wife: “<Then why do you prepare for the day?>”
Word balloon, Geomancer: “<The Earth has sent me another man’s bad dreams.>”
Word balloon, wife: “<And I suppose you must now find this man?>”
Word balloon, Geomancer: “<Of course.>”

Panel 4. Geomancer leans over to his wife as he hoists his pack.
Word balloon, wife: “<Have you what you need to stay warm?>”
Word balloon, Geomancer: “<I have enough. It will not keep me as warm as you do.>”
Word balloon, wife: “<Will you return before Spring?>”
Word balloon, Geomancer: “<Hopefully well before.>”
Word balloon, wife: “<Stay safe then, I will not sleep well without you.>”

Panel 5. Geomancer is leaving the hut, crescent moon with some clouds, a fair amount of snow is on the ground.

Page 6.
Panel 1. Shot of Spider Alien fleet in orbit. Smaller ships are pouring out of one of the bigger ones in the foreground.
Caption box: “Two weeks later, local time reckoning”

Panel 2. Interior of a large Spider Alien ship, bridge. (See Harby #2 –3) A human-like Spider Alien, (similar to Lydia or Prather, see X-O #1 and 2) First-Among-Equals (F-A-E) is talking to a worker (regular Spider Alien, see X-O #1).
Word balloon, worker: “Firssst-Among Equalsss, attack forccce en route.”

Panel 3. Still on bridge, F-A-E has moved closer to the console where the worker is.
Word balloon, F-A-E: “Are they having any difficulties locating the barbarian settlement?”
Word balloon, worker: “They still follow the correct trajectory.”

Panel 4. Close-up of leader’s face, he looks angry
Word balloon, F-A-E: “Excellent. We will not allow the savages to defile the holy lands beyond this point.”

Panel 5. Still on bridge of Spider Alien ship
Word balloon, F-A-E: “Ensure the warriors make the meat dismantle all they have built.”

Panel 6. F-A-E addressing the bridge.
Word balloon, F-A-E: “We have no wish to reveal ourselves until the rest of the fleet arrives, but when every trace of any colony they establish vanishes, the meat will cease damaging the holy beings on the unspoiled land mass.”

Page 7.

Panel 1. Panoramic shot. Manteo the Geomancer, has reached the clearing where Aric and the X-O armor are buried (See X-O MOW #9 and #10 for ref.)

Panel 2. Manteo touching the ground.

Panel 3. Now Manteo is digging a hole with the Geomancer’s axe.

Panel 4. Still digging. More dirt cleared.

Panel 5. Close-up of the X-O gauntlet sticking out of the dirt in the bottom of the dirt pit. Manteo’s staff is visible in panel.

Panel 6. Manteo keeps clearing away dirt, concentrating on where Aric’s head should be.

Panel 7. Aric’s face plate now visible, armor is still old-style X-O (X-O MOW #0-9 for ref.), Aric has a beard, (see X-O #9, p.22, panel 4 for final depth of pit.)

Panel 8. Manteo places hand on face plate.
Word balloon, Manteo: “Wake.”

Panel 9. Extreme close-up of Aric’s eye as he wakes.
Thought box, Aric: “Good Skin?”

Page 8.

Panel 1. Aric sits up in hole, dirt dropping off him. Manteo is standing back to give him room.
Thought box, Aric: “It is when?”
Word balloon, Aric: “Who are you? Why do you wake me 400 years too early?”

Panel 2. Aric stands up in hole, more dirt drops off. Manteo reaches out to help him out of the hole.
Word balloon, Manteo: “The Earth has sent me to wake you for help against the sky spider.”
Word balloon, Aric: “The Earth should have sent you elsewhere. I desire nothing but sleep and a return to when I now belong.”

Panel 3. Manteo looks shocked as Aric climbs out of hole, ignoring Manteo’s hand.
Word balloon: “You don’t want to help?”

Panel 4. Aric’s out of the hole, knocking larger chunks of dirt off.
Word balloon, Aric: “I don’t see why I should.”

Panel 5. Manteo looks a bit freaked, almost pleading.
Word balloon, Manteo: “Is the Sky Spider not your enemy?”

Panel 6. The X-O is opening off Aric, who’s taking a deep breath of fresh air.
Word balloon, Aric: “I don’t know this person. I know no one in this time or place.”

Panel 7. Manteo is trying to explain.
Word balloon, Manteo: “Not one person, many. They took you to sky, long ago?”

Panel 8. Aric turns to glare at Manteo. The X-O is starting to move back up Aric’s torso.

Page 9.

Panel 1. Same panel as last, but X-O armor now back in place on Aric.
Word balloon, Aric: “Hard-skins.”

Panel 2. Cut to shot of Spider Alien force landing near a human settlement (Roanoke Colony) and disembarking. Silhouetted in foreground are a few armed English settlers watching the aliens.

Panel 3. Focus on one Spider Alien warrior warily walking with weapon drawn.

Panel 4. Head of warrior explodes, blows out to Spider Alien’s right.

Panel 5. Spider Alien corpse drops, other Spider Alien troops reacting.

Panel 6. Colonists charge. There should be a good crowd of 10-20 guys in period dress and weapons rushing. (See reference provided.)
Word balloon, colonists: “Kill the devils!”
Word balloon, colonists: “For the Queen!”
Word balloon, colonists: “For Roanoke!”

Page 10.

Panel 1. Similar panel as last on page 9, but with changing colonists being shot to pieces by Spider Alien beam weapons. Wasn’t much of an attack by the humans.

Panel 2. The leader of the attack force is in Commando-Class armor (See X-O MOW # 6 when Aric beats the crap out of Ax.) watches as his warriors start feasting on dead and dying colonists.
Word balloon, X-O Commando: “Stupid meat.”
Word balloon, X-O Commando: “Deploy all wolf-class above this island to kill anyone trying to give aid.”

Panel 3. Panoramic of Roanoke Island from air, five X-O wolf-class armors (see X-O MOW #2, P.1 for ref) are flying up off island, smoke is rising from one end of the island where the attack is starting.

Page 11.

Panel 1. Splash page – Aric is carrying Manteo (who points out a spot ahead on the ground) as he flies south towards Roanoke Island. Manteo looks at least a bit freaked out due to being up in the air. Background is sky with a few clouds.
Word balloon, Manteo: “You go too fast!”
Word balloon, Aric: “This is nothing. Were I to go fast you would not survive.”
Word balloon, Manteo: “Then I will be happy to get there soon!”
Word balloon, Aric: “So you have been where we are going?”
Word balloon, Manteo: “Indeed. The English taught me their tongue and much about England. In return, I taught them how to not starve or freeze to death.”
Word balloon, Aric: “Ha! A one-sided bargain, Geomancer.”
Word balloon, Manteo: “Land there on the mainland, warrior.”

Page 12

Panel 1. Aric lands where Manteo indicated. Manteo is pointing again, this time to a nearby island with several plumes of smoke rising from it now.
Word balloon, Manteo “Many have died already, some still live.”

Panel 2. Aric flies off towards the island, leaving Manteo at the tree line.

Panel 3. The five wolf-class have seen Aric and start attacking. Their fire has no effect, Aric rockets to the ground.

Panel 4. Aric is pulling a palisade pole from the ground (basically a long, heavy log sharpened to a point on one end.)

Panel 5. Aric throws the palisade pole like a spear, it smashes through three wolf-classes (which explode). The remaining two wolf classes move in to attack hand-to-hand.

Page 13.

Panel 1. Aric punches through the helmet of one wolf (dies). Aric shoots other wolf with energy beam (dies).

Panel 2. Aric flies up into the air again, toward the largest column of smoke.

Panel 3. Back in the main Roanoke settlement, the Spider Alien are forcing the colonists to dismantle the wooden structures of the colony. They are also killing and eating a few. Any colonists who have already been fed upon should appear mummified, those currently getting drained should look thin and gaunt. (See X-O MOW #1, page 9, panel 3 for examples of fully drained victims.)
Word balloon, Commando: “Tear it down, filth! It is sickening to see what you meat have done to these higher forms of life.”

Panel 4. Energy beams shoot in, killing Spider Aliens left and right, the ones not dying look shocked as hell.

Panel 5. Aric smashes down into the Commando. Spider Aliens and humans alike are scattering.

Page 14.

Panel 1. Aric and Commando are grappling, Commando is blasting Aric (makes him smoke a little, but otherwise little effect). Aric seems bent on punching the Commando to death.

Panel 2. Cut to shot of Spider Alien fleet in orbit.

Panel 3. Bridge of Spider Alien ship, worker at a monitor, F-A-E is nearby talking to another human-like Spider Alien.
Word balloon, worker: “Firssst, it appearsss a Man-O-War classss hasss attacked our forcesss.”

Panel 4. Focus on F-A-E now, looks like what he just heard made no sense whatsoever.

Panel 5. Repeat last panel.
Word balloon, F-A-E: “What?”

Panel 6. Repeat shot of Spider Alien fleet in orbit, something is streaking out of the docking bay.

Panel 7. Back to the surface, Aric is still beating the fool out of the Commando class.

Page 15.

Panel 1. Next four panels are of Aric bashing the Commando around, Commando’s fighting back some, but it has little or no effect.

Panel 2. Fight

Panel 3. Fight

Panel 4. Fight

Page 16.

Panel 1. Aric lands a haymaker punch on the Commando’s face plate.

Panel 2. Close-up of Commando’s face, he’s staring at a spider-web crack in the glass of his armor’s face-plate.

Panel 3. Aric blasts the Commando in the face-plate, shattering it. Commando’s head vaporizes in the helmet.
Thought balloon, Aric: “This red one didn’t last as long as the first one I destroyed.”

Panel 4. Aric looks around the now-dismantled settlement.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Locate the other hard-skins so I can kill them too.”
Thought balloon, Aric: “Incoming attack? From where?”

Panel 5. Blast as the X-O Champion alien shoots, down, smashing into Aric.

Page 17.

Panel 1. Two X-Os fight. They are evenly matched for power, though Aric has much more experience than the Champion.

Panel 2. More fight.

Panel 3. More fight, Aric tries to use energy beam, it misfires.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Huh?”

Panel 4. More fight. The Champion presses the attack.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Good Skin, What’s wrong?”

Thought balloon, Echo, still small: “Wrong?”

Panel 5. More fight, Aric’s going fist to fist with Champion.
Thought balloon, Aric: “What’s causing that echo?”

Thought balloon, Echo: “Causing that echo?”

Panel 6. The two back off, defensive stance, looking for an opening.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Why is it so hard to feel you Good Skin?”
Thought balloon, Echo: “Feel you Good Skin?”
Champion tries to use energy beam, gets same misfire Aric got.

Panel 7. Aric leaps toward Champion, fight resumes
Thought balloon, Aric: “Ha! He has a problem too!”

Thought balloon, Echo: “Has a problem too!”

Panel 8. Champion grabs Aric’s head, twists neck trying a killing move.
Thought balloon, Aric: “The Good Skin feels sluggish, like when the renegade boy wizard attacked us in New Orleans.”
Thought Balloon, Echo: “Renegade boy wizard attacked us . . .”

Panel 9. Didn’t work, Aric backhands Champion off him.

Page 18.

Panel 1. Aric dodges the Champion’s attack.
Thought balloon, Aric: “This is wrong. Why am I hearing you in such a strange manner?”
Thought balloon, Echo: “Am I hearing you?”

Panel 2. Aric throws boulder at Champion, who shrugs it off.
Thought balloon, Aric: “Is it possible Good Skin?”
Thought balloon, Echo: “Possible Good Skin?”

Panel 3. Aric dodges another attack.

Panel 4. Fight pauses again. The two X-Os regard each other like gun slingers.

Panel 5. Aric raises fist with X-O control ring.
Word balloon: “To me, Good Skin!”

Panel 6. Panoramic of the island, a large blast is erupting from the center.

Page 19.

Panel 1. Cut to Manteo, rowing across the channel to the island in a canoe.

Panel 2. Back to the clearing, Aric (now wearing a loincloth) is stunned, trying to get off the ground. Trees, etc. are on fire in background.

Panel 3. Naked Champion dives towards Aric, attacking.

Panel 4. Aric’s fighting back, losing ground to the larger Spider Alien champion, but looking incredibly *SQUEE*.

Panel 5. Champion throws Aric across the clearing.

Panel 6. Aric slides to a stop on ground, starting to foam at the mouth.

Page 20.

Panel 1. Champion pushes his attack on Aric, who rises from the ground with something in his hand (a good-sized rock).

Panel 2. Focus on Champion’s face as he and Aric grapple.
Word balloon, Champion: “I will drink your juicesss for daysss, meat.”

Panel 3. Similar panel, Aric smashes alien’s head with the rock.

Panel 4: Aric has been savaging the Champion’s corpse. Aric’s hands, forearms, and mouth are dripping gore from the Spider-Alien as he screams at the sky like a were-wolf.

Panel 5: X-O armor begins to envelope the still insane screaming Aric.

Panel 6: X-O armor has almost enveloped Aric, armor is jacked up. (Ref. X-O #10 when he’s waking up).

Page 21.

Panel 1: Forest is quiet now. Other X-O armor floats over Aric (encased in messed up armor).

Panel 2: Close-up of Manteo, removing the control ring from the dead champion. In the background, five surviving colonists can be seen emerging cautiously from the woods.

Panel 3: Manteo places the ring on the other X-O ball. Survivors might be seen getting closer.
Word balloon, Manteo: “Go.”

Panel 4: Worm’s eye view as Manteo and the survivors watch the X-O sphere rise into the sky.
Word balloon, survivor #1: “Manteo? How did ye avoid the devils?”
Word balloon, Manteo: “They had other concerns. Do you have a boat with room to carry this warrior?”

Panel 5: Manteo and the survivors are talking, Manteo is removing a hunting knife from his belt.
Word balloon, survivor #2: “Aye, we have a small pinnace, but I’ll not touch that unholy thing!”
Word balloon, Manteo: “You’ll not have to. Make ready your ship. We must leave before the sky spider returns if we are to take this man back to where he should be.
Word balloon, Manteo: “Now . . .”

Panel 6: Manteo begins carving something on one of the few posts still standing.
Word Balloon, Manteo: “. . . I must leave a message.”

Page 22.

Panel 1: Back on main Spider Alien ship, First-Among- Equals, a priest and a worker are walking down a corridor: Leader and worker side-by-side, priest behind them.
Word Balloon, FAE, 1: “Has any further information been uncovered?”
Word Balloon, Worker: “No, and the armor we recovered remainssss corrupted.”
Word Balloon, FAE, 2: “Meaning?”

Panel 2: FAE, worker, and priest have entered some form of observation chamber. The room they’re in is separated from another room by whatever the Spider Aliens use for glass. Behind the glass, a Spider Alien slightly resembling the Champion Aric killed stands near the “inert” X-O armor (It looks half-folded, like when Aric found it in X-O #1 or Zero.)
Word Balloon, Worker: “Obssserve.”

Panel 3: Spider Alien Champion wanna-be take’s control ring, eyes are wide.

Panel 4: Worker turns to leader as wanna-be starts insanely tearing it’s own throat out.
Word Balloon, Worker: “It will accept no ring-wearer.”
Word Balloon, Priest: “It is as if it has been long-bonded with another, but this armor was bonded with its Champion much less than a local quarter-cycle.”

Panel 5: FAE addressing worker and priest.
Word Balloon, FAE: “And the survivors of the force we sent?
Word Balloon, Worker: “The explosssion we detected killed all warriorsss and meat on the isssland.”

Panel 6: FAE, priest, worker still talking.
Word Balloon, FAE: “Is there any record of the battle from the surface?”
Word Balloon, Worker: “Thisss image of the meat that controlled the other ssuit wasss sssalvaged from a damaged recording device . . .”

Page 23.

Panel 1: POV of the Spider Aliens as the worker pushes a button. On a view-screen above the button the insane face of Aric with the X-O armor enveloping him is visible.

Panel 2: Head-shot of FAE, his body is turned to the side, head looking at the reader.

Panel 3: Same Panel, but with FAE’s head turned away from the reader.
Word Balloon, FAE, 1: “Quarantine this area on the planet until we find out how a filthy barbarian took possession of an X-O. Until we know more this meat is not to be provoked.”
Word Balloon, FAE, 2: “And lock the corrupted armor away.”

Panel 4: FAE exits room, priest and worker bow as he leaves.

Panel 5: Mid-range shot of worker walking down ship corridor.

Panel 6: Worker enters a new room. Another worker sits at a console.
Word Balloon, worker at panel, 1: “We are detecting a faint sssignal around the corrupted armor.”
Word Balloon, worker entering room: “Sssource?”
Word Balloon, worker at panel, 2: “Likely the X-O itssself. There is sssome sssort of command being repeated over and over, but the control ring isss preventing any action.”

Page 24.

Panel 1: Worker who entered room stands behind worker at console.
Word Balloon, worker standing: “Can we decrypt this sssignal?”
Word Balloon, worker sitting: “Not at thisss time.”

Panel 2: Image of the semi-open X-O armor on a viewscreen at the panel on the console the workers are at.

Panel 3: Same image as panel 2, but now from POV of being in the room in front of the armor. The control ring is visible and in place.
Thought Box: “To me, Good Skin!”
(Thought box should be repeated multiple times around the panel.)

I really like it, Stu. It was very easy to imagine the action going on as I was reading. Had a very classic early Valiant feel to it. I would definitely like to see this story in comic form.

Very cool.

I like stories that "fill in" the gaps that were in the VU.
