What Should I Read Next? All Vertigo Edition
Last time, my choices in order of votes were:
- Preacher
- Bone
- Dini Detectives
- John's Action
- Rucka's Queen and Country
I read Preacher, then Bone. I enjoyed Bone more. This time, I feel like reading some Vertigo. You choose. I have all the stuff listed, but will need to pick up vol 3 of Sandman (if I don't have the singles).
My comments of the first "What should I read" thread:

My comments of the first "What should I read" thread:

This series was at its best when the focus was the action parts and the finding God / Saint of Killers parts. When it focused on the character interactions, it felt weak. That's strange for me because it's usually character interactions that draw me into a book, but I don't believe it's Ennis' strength.
At the beginning, it felt like there was a clear direction for the book. Then, it wandered for many, many trades while Ennis strung it out and wrote about things that interested him.
At the end, everything wrapped up neatly, but not really in a satisfying manner for me. It felt a bit cheap, honestly. You could tell those last 2 issues had been written a while ago for whenever Ennis was ready to end the series. I know that's how it's done by writers, but this was a cookie cutter ending that could be plopped almost anywhere in the series.
When I started, I thought this was going to be a big adventure story. It ended up being a character story and that was a bit disappointing.
I can see how some people think this series is the best. I'm amazed it came out of the mid 90s when other comics were crap.
Compared to other Vertigo titles, I think I enjoyed Y the Last Man more because it was an adventure throughout. The first 10 volumes of Fables are stronger too, IMO.
400yrs on Bone wrote:I finally finished Bone. I flew through the first 6-700 pages with the character stuff. Then, it slowed down alot with the adventure story and the ghost circles and everything. The last 200 pages picked up the pace and I flew through those pretty quickly.
I'm very glad I read this. It's probably the kind of book that I will read again one day.

Northlanders. It's my favorite Vertigo title right now. It's a series of independent story arcs so issues 1-20 will give you about four different stories about four different eras and characters. Variety!
If you're wanting a nice long narrative, you can't go wrong with Sandman. It didn't win the awards and acclaim for nothing. But it's an older series and you probably have read quite a few spoilers so the uniqueness may be lost on you.

I've heard some good things about it and wanted to try something else by Seagle after reading American Virgin which was very different from most other comics.Doorman wrote:I remember buying the Crusades as it was being published. It was certainly interesting - but I don't remember much of it, anymore. You have just inspired an upcoming "retro-read" for my blog.

I really enjoyed American Virgin, as well - certainly unique story type for the comics format.400yrs wrote:I've heard some good things about it and wanted to try something else by Seagle after reading American Virgin which was very different from most other comics.Doorman wrote:I remember buying the Crusades as it was being published. Actually, I don't think I've read anything spoilery regarding Sandman. About all I know is that it's a classic and goths love it.Steve Topper wrote:If you're wanting a nice long narrative, you can't go wrong with Sandman.
