My Valiant Story...Mrs. Shooter
I was selling insurance door to door and a new guy started in the office. The conversation turned to comics and he remarked that a big name comics guy's mother lived in the area. When he said the name, I said "who" and he repeated it again like I was a comic leper ..." Jim Shooter! His mom! you never heard of Jim Shooter?" He was basically spit screaming. I said "oh, yeah, shooter" to keep from getting my head bashed in but could only remember a little of the shooter story. Anyway, the guy said, he thought he had heard shooter was starting a new company and we decided to look Mrs. Shooter up. We did and a short time later, we were knocking on her door. She answered and I quickly explained what we were doing there. Instead of shooting us or slamming the door, she invited the two of us in. Mr. Shooter (Jim's dad) was there too and we began to talk and listen, mostly listen, for at least the next two hours. Mrs. Shooter proved to be a great lady, an even prouder mom and when we were done, she invited us back later down the line when the comics started coming out. I won't bore everyone to death because there is so much more I could write. Maybe later. She handed me a Cheesosaurus Rex and off I went. I'm glad I found this board and look forward to more posts.

thanks for the welcomes! i still have the Cheesosaurus Rex. Its a neat book. Mrs. Shooter did invite us back and I left her my phone number. Soon, she called, very excited, and said the books were finally coming out. She was so proud of Jim! Needless to say, I got all those early Valiants as they came out, visited Mrs. Shooter repeatedly and read them to death. They are some of the best stories, some of the most retrograde art and artists, even steve ditko on some and others equally as committed to artful storytelling. Great colors. Just a fantastic universe until it all came apart, rather quickly. I wrote a first appearances guide coupled with storylines across all the early books. I was never such a comic book collector, had to read my cousins mostly to keep up with my supers. But Valiant changed all that and collapsed it all in a few short issues. Right in the middle of the price mania, i sold some fof the extras i had by just walking around a convention with them in my hands. people could not get them quick enough and never balked at the price, typically telling me some amazing amount. It was all pretty crazy, as most of you know. I kept some good copies and of course still have my reading copies. I really like those stories and when i read them again i miss the valiant universe. more later and thanks again for the welcome.
