Timewalker/Doctor Mirage/Visitor - Worth it?

Post by Harbinger2480 »

Could y'all give me some advice on whether or not Timewalker, Doctor Mirage, and Visitor are all worth reading? All three have sparked my curiosity, but I just don't know if they're worth the time and money (I've been offered full runs of all three for a total of $47).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Timewalker, particularly The Harbinger Wars, is very much worth it. I never cared for The Visitor, although some like it, and if you are a fan of certain characters from Harbinger, you will want to read it. As for Doctor Mirage, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Timewalker has some good Bob Hall work, while Mirage was Layton having fun and Bernard Chang putting out some gorgeous art.

You could probably pick them up a little cheaper, especially if you have a LCS with a quarter bin. As far as reading goes, nothing really spectacular. Timewalker is the best of the three and I never really cared for The Visitor or Dr. Mirage all that much.

The only one I've read entirely is Dr. Mirage. It's not that good. It's not something I'll ever feel the need to read again.

I enjoyed "The Visitor" series! Actually out of the three series mentioned here it was my favorite. Timewalker wasn't bad but the whole origin and tie in with that weird alien/future person just seemed odd and didn't really "fit" with what we already knew about geomancers, earth, etc...

How do I put this...?

Are any of them the noteworthy part of the Valiant Universe?

No.

But all of them have moments.

Dr. Mirage has some humorous sections - and is probably the most different hero in the universe. Also has Master Darque - at least briefly.

Visitor has some of the best covers in the line.

But any of them can be completed - relatively cheaply. So all of them would be 'worth it.'

Thanks everyone for all the insight/advice. I greatly appreciate it. I think I'm gonna stick with getting the Harbinger Wars issues of TimeWalker at the moment and the leave the rest for another time. Thanks again!

Agreed.

I think the unpublished Acclaim version of Mirage made way better use of the character.

There are ways of making those characters-both of them-work....

Gotta get 'em all!

Dr. Mirage is one of Bob Layton's favorites, worth it just for that? Maybe.

Timewalker is hit or miss, the Harbinger Wars are cool, as mentioned.

Visitor, for all its flaws, is very important to the VH1 Valiant Universe. It's kinda interesting, though the ending doesn't quite follow through with the setup.

If only there was a podcast that readers curious about The Visitor could listen to in order to gain knowledge and perspective on its run!

If such a podcast DID exist, I would expect the host of said podcast to mention its existence when replying to a post to which said podcast might be relevant.

Also, :P

Oops, I guess that was the End of an Era episode for Only the Valiant. However, it is unlikely that the new format will ever again dive into the shallow depths of The Visitor series again, so interested readers should give it a listen if they are curious about the series.

Also, when does the Gold Logo promo start for those of us pushing the podcast? :)
Seriously though, I hope new/returning Valiant readers check out the podcast. You hear that new/returning Valiant readers?!

I've gotta throw a little love out for Dr. Mirage. I think that in a way that book fits into a category similar to Archer & Armstrong. Adventures, and lots of strange things happening, but definitely not a "hero" book. As some others have said, I have always liked the fact that Carmen played just as important a role as Mirage himself did. I thought it was a great book while Layton was on it, and I was disappointed at how abruptly it ended. There wasn't even a proper conclusion to the series.
