No, I don't have an issue when someone says the paper quality may be leading to more damage, that is a critique. I do have an issue when someone says the paper quality sucks, theres no reason they can't do better and if they don't change I won't buy Valiant anymore because they need to please me individually. I just wanted to point out there are many other factors involved and to take such into consideration.Zaphod wrote:So the critiques you agree with you don't have a problem with but critiques that you don't agree with are "fanboy" whining? Or a sense of entitlement?BugsySig wrote:I just want to clarify that my post was spurred not by basic critiques (the bar codes for example, which I totally agree with, or the cover quality leading to more damage). Those, I agree, are helpful to VEI as a publisher. Espescially here, where we know Dino and others regularly frequent.
It is this sense of entitlement, which I see all the time in my students, where if something isn't exactly how I want it to be then I'm done with it. It drives me crazy because I remember how thankful consumers were in the 90s when Valiant, and yes Image, gave us an alternative to the Big 2. Don't mistake thankfulness for fan-boyishness...I still want a good product...and that is what I'm seeing thus far.
I think you are misunderstanding how you deal with your students and the topics of their lives that you don't agree with and how you are handling others on a message board who are on an even field with yourself. Get over it.
And when I refer to my students, I am referring to instances (for example) where someone is a great athlete, but the coach calls them out for not putting in enough effort and they quit the team. I could give you a hundred other examples, none of which have to do with my agreement with topics of their lives.
And everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't claim or think I am better than anyone else. I was simply surprised at what I was reading and stated my personal opinions on the matter just as you are. Telling someone to "get over it" is rather trite when they are never under it in the first place.

I didn't intend that as tritely as it came across, in hindsight if I could remove it from the post I would. This is one of the many reasons I have been signed up for this site for 6 years but have so few posts. I don't communicate as well as I'd like on message boards.BugsySig wrote:Telling someone to "get over it" is rather trite when they are never under it in the first place.
What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter

Wait, people are complaining about paper quality?
Seriously, execution of story and art are of utmost importance -- Without those the comic could be printed on the finest parchment and who'd give a damn?

Re: An observation and some comments...
I greatly dislike the cover quality on the regular Harbinger 1. I stand by that. I dislike it tonight, and I'm sure I will when I awake in the morning as well. I might even dislike it more in the morning. I wish Valiant had chosen to take a stand for quality on this front. I'm not sure who said they're willing to leave the launch over it, though.
Just an observation and a comment...

The problems with the 1:50 covers might be the only time I consider buying CGC just to make sure I have a NM copy --- though I loathe CGC

Good point about the 1:20. I just hope they don't keep making the regular covers the same quality as the regular Harbinger 1. If they do, I guess I'll have to grin and bear it.kevinbastos wrote:I hated it at first - but like it more now.StarBrand wrote:I greatly dislike the cover quality on the regular Harbinger 1. I think I may have been one of VEI's staunchest supporters on this board over the last several years, never doubting they were working toward publishing ongoing titles. I'm sure I still will be. Still, if they do something I personally dislike, I very well may point out my dismay about it right here on this very board of Valiant fans.

People who loathe CGC usually have a crapload of comics that are under near mint that they THOUGHT were near mint plus.BruceReville wrote:The problems with the 1:50 covers might be the only time I consider buying CGC just to make sure I have a NM copy --- though I loathe CGC

Well... I'm sure there will be 9.2's... but not so sure about higher.
It's not that I don't have an avatar... I've just been working on it for the last few hundred years.

I loathe them from hearing about shady stories of grading preferentially for dealers and ultimately for the mere fact that they changed to new crappy wells for the holders that can cause damage to comics during shipping.greg wrote:People who loathe CGC usually have a crapload of comics that are under near mint that they THOUGHT were near mint plus.BruceReville wrote:The problems with the 1:50 covers might be the only time I consider buying CGC just to make sure I have a NM copy --- though I loathe CGC

If they hadn't changed the encapsulation method and had in fact inproved it, then I'd have faith in them still for mere preservation and protection.

Re: An observation and some comments...
I have a Harbinger QR - with only one tiny spine tick on it. Didn't notice it until the third look through. I am not any expert with any kind of anything on grading. But - As a non-expert, I am guessing it would certainly be a 9.6.
With only the one flaw...
I am waiting to send a pile, though. Mine won't be sent until next summer at the soonest.
I have never sent anything CGC anywhere - but will probably try to send a pile of new Valiants.

I'm a reader - older comics I tend to get in VG condition as long as it isn't mangled - newer comics I am happy with fine - but collectible ones I do tend to get in a higher grade, but still not CGCgreg wrote:People who loathe CGC usually have a crapload of comics that are under near mint that they THOUGHT were near mint plus.BruceReville wrote:The problems with the 1:50 covers might be the only time I consider buying CGC just to make sure I have a NM copy --- though I loathe CGC

Feedback is good, even if it is critical feedback.
Negativity, however, provides a negative return on emotional investment.
Lately, negativity has really been a trigger for me, to the point that I really hate negativity. That creates a strange dissonance, however, because I'm sure the irony of that emotional response is apparent.

That first time you submit a book that you thought was Near Mint, that comes back an 8.0, is a real eye opener.
