I started reading the John Byrne "Man Of Steel" mini-series last night. I've never actually read it before. I find it ironic that, in an essay at the end, Byrne talks about how simple the old comic book stories were. Three or four stories per issue, maybe only 7 or 8 pages per story. But comics had evolved to more complex, multi-issue stories. The irony is that I found "Man Of Steel" - at least the first issue - to be a rather simple story.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Y the Last Man (re-reading) - halfway through the second hardcover.

Other than that, I've been reading some stuff that isn't that great. Random things that I picked up:
Teen Titans vs the Flash Rogues - sucked
Marvel Assistant Editor #1 - sucked
Avergers X-Sanction #1 or whatever - sucked
Venom #7 - This was pretty good
Animal Man #8 - This was good, but the art is taking a big dump with Foreman coming off the book.

Secret #1 - This was ok, but was forgettable and did nothing to make me want to read #2

Avengers #1 (from 2010) - This sucked. Every single character in this book had the same exact voice and thought - that of Bendis. No distinction at all in dialogue nor thought. You could literally switch the thought bubbles in every single panel to a different character and it wouldn't make one iota of a difference in the story that is told.

The Transformers: Regeneration One #80.5, it's only the great artwork that protects and/or saves only a slightly average recap and tease story with some very cheesy and over-the-top dialogue. Could have been much better, but could have been much worse. Furman and company had better bring their AAA+++ games or I'll drop this book faster than a New York minute. I give this FCBD issue a 3 out of 5.

Finished reading Crimson Empire III. Very anti-climactic for a 12 year wait for this third chapter of the series. It wasn't bad but it seemed like it was just made to reintroduce the old characters again to new fans. There was no "Kir Kanos vs. Luke" fight at the end at all which leads me to believe they are saving it for Crimson Empire IV & V.

Next up is Dark Times: Out of the Wilderness. 2 issues in and this series is badass. This title feels like classic gritty old skool trilogy Star Wars. And features probably the best artwork the line will ever have.

8-)

This week's reads were:

Saga 3: Still as awesome as always. Still my favorite book being printed.

Danger Club 2: Kind of a slow down after the last issue, seemed like a bit of setup, but still pretty good.

Manhattan Projects 3: Didn't like this one quite as much as the previous two, but it was still pretty intriguing, with hints of stuff developing that could be really cool. I do like that each issue introduces some new, insane concept to the series.

Finally got around to reading Avengers Initiative. I'm about halfway through the series and it's awesome! I really didn't know I was going to like it as much as I am. Dan Slott did a great job of writing this series.

Y the Last Man HC 2. This book re-reads even better. I remember not liking the 2 play issues where Yorick wasn't in them, but I enjoyed them this time around.

Glad you're digging it! That series was so much fun! I haven't read Avengers Academy yet ... but I've been buying it monthly just because I liked A:the Initiative so much - so I figured Gage would continue the same fun vibe.

It's funny because it's true. Not quite to that extent, but still true in some ways.

I really liked the end, but I don't remember the specifics. I'm excited to read it again. I just finished vol 3 so two more to go.

Just finished Hellboy: The Storm and the Fury tpb. Man, what a great story. I'm a little disappointed in how it ended, but also very curious as to where Mignola is going with this. But I trust him and anxiously await the next chapter in the Hellboy story.

interesting that was done by marvel, I had thought that the majority of the Moorcock stuff was put out by First/Capital comics...
