He's got a system... literally.

I don't know the exact algorithm, but I believe it's something like...

1) Take the purchase price (his cost)
2) Multiply it by at least 4
3) See if the book sells (if so, increase the multiplier in step 2 in the future)
4) If not sold yet, see if it sells with a discount code from the email mailing list
5) If not sold yet, lower the price slowly until it sells
6) Rinse, repeat

I purchased some Valiant back issues recently from Mile High to fill some holes. It was not a huge order, but around $75 of back issues, none more than $3 each. I have never been more disappointed about grading from a major retailer. A few books labelled VF were close to NM. However, more often that not, the NM books, which cost more, were F or VF. This is super annoying, especially when the difference Mile High charges for grades is steep. If they were all $1 or less, I wouldn't care that much.

I expect better customer experience and attention to detail at what is arguably the most famous comic shop in the US.

Very disappointed.

Steve

I have one Mile High story....just one...because it's the last time I would ever use them for anything that wasn't a new release. This was over 10 years ago, but I bought what was listed as a NM Tomb of Dracula #10 (first Blade) through their website for what seemed a very reasonable price. However, what arrived was nowhere near NM. In fact, it was just a flat out misleading. And of course, there's very little recourse. Anyway, I've heard stories about them similar to this over the years, so it seems nothing has changed.

I've got a Mile High story as well... about 10 years ago, I checked the Mile High website and saw Shadowman #43 for something like $1.50.
I bought 10 of them... nice deal... 10 copies for $15.

I received 10 copies of Shade, The Changing Man #43.

I assume you asked them for an explanation? There's nothing subjective about a mistake like that...

Worse for Mile High, definitely. "He who should not be named" is likely to rob them blind, smiling and shaking hands while he does it.

I've spent hours recently checking Mile High's sold auctions. It's obvious what Chuck is doing is not only effective, but is extremely effective.

Chuck is the most successful comic book retailer in history. He's doing better than just staying in business.

You've gotta agree with results. The prices are crazy high, but in the end, it's his business, and if he makes the $$ this way, more power to him. I personally wouldn't buy from them but that's cause I'm a cheap *SQUEE* and only collecting Valiant and trades of other stuff. Amazon/chapters for trades and Valiant from the members here (and my not so local CS) :D

I remember many years ago (20ish) for Christmas my parents got me a complete Knightfall/quest/search set where batmans back was broken by Bane and they were all in great shape and the prices weren't too bad either, but that is the only time I have dealt with them.
Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

You guys can't make these kind of comments, and not fill the rest of us in on the story...(thoroughly confused).

I've bought a couple of times from Mile High, decent transaction. Occasionally he has some extremely rare books, at decent prices. I definitely keep an eye out on those. Lone Star on the other hand...

The first time I bought anything from Mile High was like in 1981. It was okay that time and a couple other times, but in the long run I can't stand their business practices. They take for ever to ship, they lie about shipping, and could care less about customer service.

Their practice on sales is basically throwing it against the wall and seeing what sticks rather than striving to be better customer servants.

There is a better store than them called "Lonestar Comics". On eBay they are "mycomicshop".
