Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
I was looking at the previews today and noticed that the Dynamite was going to release Turok as........"Turok Dinosaur Hunter." I know that Dynamite acquired the rights to Gold Key - Turok Son of Stone, but didn't know they could publish Turok Dinosaur Hunter without consent from Valiant. Any thoughts?
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics

Didn't think they could use "Turok Dinosaur hunter" either they should have come up with some other name other than it.
If I just can't be me ,and the Arrow isn't enough.. then maybe I should be Ra's al Ghul

Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
I thought the same thing. Maybe Valiant let (licensed) them to use it. Maybe they didn't and someone screwed up and Dynamite will have to change the name.caxiotis wrote:I was looking at the previews today and noticed that the Dynamite was going to release Turok as........"Turok Dinosaur Hunter." Turok : The Dinosaur Hunter and Returns might give the uninformed reader that it is a continuation of the valiant Turok.

I didn't notice that but that is true and is in bad taste for Dynamite to add that.jedimarley wrote:Turok : The Dinosaur Hunter and Returns might give the uninformed reader that it is a continuation of the valiant Turok.

Interesting to see what happens with this.
Also, it looks like Kirkman isn't budging on the Outcast name.
Lot of disrespect shown towards VEI.

Yep..the sad part is legal battles cost VEI money that could be better spent creating comics..the other comic producers know this.jedimarley wrote:Interesting to see what happens with this.

I say my disapproval of this with my money..I wont buy any of Dynamite's books and if Kirkman makes an Outcast book I wont buy anything he makes no matter how good.

http://www.legalforce.com/turok-dinosau ... 41952.html
according to that link...
"On Monday, December 14, 1992, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER by Western Publishing Company, Inc., Racine, WI 53404. The USPTO has given the TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER trademark serial number of 74341952. The current federal status of this trademark filing is CANCELLED - SECTION 8. The correspondent listed for TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER is Susan D. Wishaw of Western Publishing Company, Inc., 1220 Mound Avenue, Racine, WI 53404 . The TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER trademark is filed in the category of Paper Goods and Printed Material . The description provided to the USPTO for TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER is comics magazines."
So it looks like the trademarked the name and allowed Valiant to use it maybe
Right after the bolded section it says canceled effective 2001, so I have no real idea at all, but figured maybe someone can clarify. This is a free trademark search site, so it could be inaccurate or outdated.

Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
If they pay to license that name as well as Turok Son of Stone, as well as whatever else is in the deal, they are well within their rights; not sure 'taste' (good or bad) can arguably come into it. If they don't have the rights, again it is not about taste, but about legal rights or lack thereof.comicsyte95 wrote:I didn't notice that but that is true and is in bad taste for Dynamite to add that.jedimarley wrote:Turok : The Dinosaur Hunter and Returns might give the uninformed reader that it is a continuation of the valiant Turok.
Of course, if it fails it fails, but that is a different thing.

Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
Even if they didn't have rights to the name Turok Dinosaur Hunter they have the rights to Turok for sure.In my opinion t wouldn't be worth it to fight for it to get them to change the name.Best for VEI just to keep publishing the best books the can.leonmallett wrote:If they pay to license that name as well as Turok Son of Stone, as well as whatever else is in the deal, they are well within their rights; not sure 'taste' (good or bad) can arguably come into it. Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
Personally I am all for this because to be totally honest....I just want to see these characters used. Dark Horse dropped the ball and Valiant didn't pick it up so I am glad someone has.
Cant wait to read these titles [I would say universe but not sure if it will be?]
If Valiant has claim anywhere we will hear about it so that stuff will get worked out. I am not going to rob myself of something potentially good because of what may or may not be bad taste.
Just my .02

clearly Dynamite wants consumers to associate this Turok with the old stuff, at least in a superficial marketing way. also note the use of the word "acclaim" in the advertising.

Yep, certainly seems like capitalizing on the Acclaim name with the word choice.mateo107 wrote:clearly Dynamite wants consumers to associate this Turok with the old stuff, at least in a superficial marketing way. also note the use of the word "acclaim" in the advertising.
The Turok games were pretty big and a major deal for Acclaim. For many that was the introduction to the character.
Same with Shadowman...and heck even Armorines!

Makes you wonder what will become of the Turok video game license now. The last attempt by Propaganda was mediocre at best.sonicdan wrote:Yep, certainly seems like capitalizing on the Acclaim name with the word choice.mateo107 wrote:clearly Dynamite wants consumers to associate this Turok with the old stuff, at least in a superficial marketing way. also note the use of the word "acclaim" in the advertising.

Not too jazzed, even though Turok was my fave VH1 title. They seem to be trying too hard to recreate that title instead of reimagining it. Even stole original Turok cover image and "retooled" it, with a Mohawk Turok. I'll pass. Hoping it fails miserably.

Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
I think they are more concerned with distancing themselves from the Dark Horse books. The more immediate name that resonates with the community is Dinosaur Hunter so that's what they are going to capitalize on.mateo107 wrote:clearly Dynamite wants consumers to associate this Turok with the old stuff, at least in a superficial marketing way. also note the use of the word "acclaim" in the advertising.

It a hot mess and I'm unhappy it's taking place, to much potential interference with VEI.

Re: Dynamite and Valiant with Turok Dinosaur Hunter
Whether they have the legal rights to the name or not, this whole thing is just plain tacky. Nice try on the "acclaim" subliminal message. I'd have more respect for this relaunch if they didn't use Valiant writers, artists, copy their strategy, and try to use associative word manipulation. It makes them seem like shysters.
At this point I don't know if they are doing all of this solely to make a big splash -- it seems like they partly want to aggravate VEI. Pak is a good writer, Turok is an interesting character. They didn't need to piggyback on VEI or Acclaim. Even if an original (I.e. non-Valiant) campaign by Dynamite didn't make a splashy debut, the series could build momentum. Instead, they've alienated a segment of their target audience by showcasing questionable business morals.
