DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
Bleeding Cool have this story up: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/03/18/ ... rtainment/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So theoretically the GK books could end up as DC books by extension *if* this happens? Never saw that coming. Not buying them, but it would have a lot of implications for the DE publishing model I guess. While discussing the upcoming Batman ’66 Green Hornet crossover, Matt Baum on the Two Headed Nerd Podcast, said,
While I was in LA with a person who will remain unnamed to protect their identity that works for Dynamite Comics. This person told me DC – actively trying to buy Dynamite Comics.
So, I thought I’d ask Nick Barrucci, publisher and president of Dynamite Entertainment who told me,
“No comment.”
DC Comics did not return e-mail enquiries.
Dynamite Entertainment, based in New Jersey, publish a mix of revived public domain-based comics like Dejah Thoris and Dracula, bought out comics like Vampirella, licensed titles such as Green Hornet, the Gold Key books and Twilight Zone, original work such as Damsels and specialises in multiple high end cover variants. They have also recently entered into a digital publishing deal with Dark Horse Comics.
Also, if true, as DC Comics head to Burbank, it would retain for them a presence on the East Coast. And we haven’t had a decent buyout story since Boom and Archaia…

Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
I suppose DC could keep them as a separate imprint for licensed properties and public domain characters.
Or they could move their licences to the DCU proper either in continuity (like with Milestone and WildStorm) or out (like THUNDER Agents and Red Circle).
If they continue to publish, at least those books would get an upgrade in quality and consistency in shipping.
Plus, I might actually consider buying some of their books again.

Just a clarification; the Red Circle stuff was actually DCU. (The Shield fought some of the Great Ten IIRC)BugsySig wrote:I suppose DC could keep them as a separate imprint for licensed properties and public domain characters.

Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
that seems odd, what exactly would DC be buying? Dynamite doesn't really own many characters, aside from Vampirella. anybody could publish public domain characters and acquire licenses.

yeah pretty much. seems odd that DC would be interested in buying such a small drop in the bucket if you ask me.mateo107 wrote:that seems odd, what exactly would DC be buying? Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
A few thoughts:
DC's purchase would be for market share.
DC thinks that licensed publishing is the next wave.
DC thinks that it's not as competitive with Marvel with respect to licensed properties.
Dynamite is having a cash flow problem, and this would fix it.
It's a bargain price.
There's a few crossovers where a deal would make financial sense.
There's some creative efficiencies that could be implemented with a merger.

I, Vampirella?
Constantine/Vampirella?
I'm down.
I like Vampirella when done right (which she rarely is)

Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
That's what I've been wondering, what would you gain? Would going after Dynamite really be worth it for characters like The Shadow, The Spider, Green Hornet and Zorro when you own Batman. Why go after the Golden Key characters now odds are DC felt it wasn't worth it when the license was up for grabs so why bother.MarkRoseHFX wrote:yeah pretty much. seems odd that DC would be interested in buying such a small drop in the bucket if you ask me.mateo107 wrote:that seems odd, what exactly would DC be buying? It also can't be for any creators since they're are work for hire and already either work for DC or have sworn off working for DC. I know Mark Waid and Chris Roberston work on Dynamite books and I know that Chris Roberston would rather not go back to DC while Mark Waid I'm pretty sure would rather blow his brains out. So why bother?

Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
I would say that one thing dynamite has going for it is they do all those high-end lithographs and they do a lot of the special signing stuff so I think they could be good for that portion of what DC does. Plus you got to remember who runs dynamite he is a talker and a dealmaker.
Re: DC Comics to buy Dynamite Entertainment? (Bleeding Cool)
The only Dynamite books I read are the Mark Waid Green Hornet ones and the Shadow, so hopefully they "leave those alone" as I like how they are done at this point.

Shield showed up in the background of one Wonder Woman book at the time.
