Ordering a box of the VF FCBD Books last year and I can tell you that Ed isn't kidding about his employees time to pack them.
Ed also did not put into account shipping supplies + counting damaged books from his shipments.
Hawkeyeps would back me up on that
I can back that up, too. That was a lot of work last year.

My thoughts though were along the lines of why take extra copies of books out of local stores and move them on the site when someone with no experience with valiant could check them out for free? I went to a few stores and just got one copy (not one at each store) for myself and that's it. I understand trying to get them into board member's hands, but I'd rather see an impact locally.

I don't have a problem with the asking price. The price is fine. You are making.... What $6-$7 after shipping. I'd just charge for shipping or nothing at all, but that's me and the spirit of a lot of people on the boards, but everyone is free to do as they please. Similarly, others are free to determine what they think of the actions others take. It's all good in the hood.

Having said all that, the copy of the handbook I got is a double cover so if someone wants to send me...... Say 2k, I'm all for it (no I didn't go back to the pile and check any other copies.... I just noticed it in line and said cool and left the store).
Sweetness! I love double covers! Found my first ever triple cover the other year on the last issue of All-Star Squadron.

I actually started a thread about the double cover FCBD books here http://www.valiantfans.com/forum/viewto ... =1&t=43289. I'm claiming I was the first to find a double cover, because I rarely get to be first at anything on this forum :P . Based on the number of folks who have reported double covers it doesn't appear to be a rarity. This really bums me out.

Again, my apologies to any board members who were upset by my WTS thread for FCBD books. :) Plus, I can't have Ed upset with me! facepalm

:breakingnews: There is one set of Valiant FCBD books available that I would like to give away for free. :) Just post in this thread that you want them and send me a PM. The other three sets have been given away. Prefer to ship in the US only due to the expense to ship international.

Thanks,

Michael

I was holding one set for a board member, but a friend picked up a set for him, so the set belongs to you now, 1st Among Equals!

I sent you a PM to get your address for shipping. Enjoy! :)

What they can do or not do.

I don't like being told what to do, so I should not be telling someone what to do.
Elveen:

I wanted to end this thread with an answer to your question regarding my motive to sell these books. It is not to "make gas money off the peeps" as you speculated. I am just a collector like most people on this board. I am not running a business and if I were I would be bankrupt by now! At least that is what my wife has said. Any money that I make selling books on this forum or eBay go right into furthering my collection. I have always sold for well below guide value unless it is a super rare item, and then, never more than guide value. I also throw in a lot of freebies, just ask around and you will see, plus many of the board members that came to my defense in this thread and sent me PM's would agree too.

I agree with you and 400 yrs that my timing was poor and I should have just waited. I have recently committed to buy over $1,200.00 of CGC 9.8 slabs from a board member and I am down to my last $50.00 to pay off this debt. That is why I have been listing several items recently to get this debt completed and to start on the next item(s) on my Want List.

I'll end this way.

As I stated, I should have minded my own business. I dislike when peeps think they are the board cops... and that is what I did.

I guess for me the timing was way wrong (and I have seen more than a few for sale threads from you and maybe this was the tipping point for me, regardless, in hindsight I should not have posted. But I will say, again, regardless what anyone says or wahtever, that I do still beleive everything I posted, but I should have kept it to myself)

I was talking to a great friend of mine yesterday (also a board member) and we were saying that it just seems that it was not "in the spirit of the boards", that in the past free was the way of things. I personally have recieved tons of free books from dudes on this board. Infact a HUGE shout out to old school member dac55 who sent me literally 20 lbs. of free books when I joined (many others sent me free books, I've gotten vvss and gold books for free and I even got a CEAR for free [that I still have in my treasure box - it was sent to me as a gift and the person did not want me to know who they were - although I DO know, so thanks again to you buddy]) I've sent TONS of free books, vvss, pre-unity, end run.... everything. It was just the way it was, if I had an extra XO #5, you need one..... I got you bro, it's on the way. I once had a stack of like 33 XO 5s..... and I gave every single one away. I'm not patting myself on the back, it is just the way it was.

I honestly have zero trouble with peeps selling to make a profit, heck I did a show yesterday and did quite well.
It just seemed that the timing and the intent were wrong, IMO. And regardless of what you are using the $$$ for, (like to grow your collection, to me it is the same.... selling books for $$$) it is still flipping something you got for free hours after you got it for $$$$ from the board. (and I do think that it was a Valiant book that made it feel wrong)

I have thought about this waaaaaa to much lately,..... but I guess this place, the dudes here, this board means so much to me. I have met most of my great friends on this board, friends I will have for the rest of my life, friends that I can count on for anything. We have spent time together, family time, real time..... and it all goes back to this board.

I think I can be a bit nostalgic at times, and I think that it what happend here (among other things....).

mkb, I'll say this.... (and not that you need me to say it, or I'm in any position to say, but I started it, so I guess I need to).... do what you gotta do. My thoughts and all should have no bearing on what you do.

Do what you do.

I think I got to emitional and was pining a bit for the '"good ole days" of the board.....

I DO want to return to our regularly scheduled program and get back to focusing on these incredible books that VEI is putting out right now.

Elveen:

I have been thinking about it too long as well and it really ruined the start of my vacation. I wanted you to know that I am shipping these sets out for free and I am eating the shipping costs too. I want to get back to the "good old days" like you. I have always treated everyone on this board with respect and gone out of my way to help others. Like you, I have given out lots of freebies and as Knightt once taught me, I try to "Pay it forward" when I can. I don't want this one sales thread to paint me in a bad light with you or any other board members.

So, as they say during the intro of the OTV Podcast, "Now, on with the show!"

I'm upset with my accountant and the IRS as well. Go figure :?

Yes, I'm trying to lighten the mood. I've got nothing but respect for everyone in this thread. I think it speaks volumes about this community when we can have such a fundamental difference in opinions, but not reach a point where people are butt hurt and flaming each other.

BTW, I'm looking forward to getting back out to California so I can visit Ed's shop(s) and catch you guys at a Con.

I appreciate whenever someone offers something up that I can't get, mark up or not. 2 books for $10 shipped sounds fair to me. It's $2.50 per book, plus $5 shipping, the way I figure. Not a windfall. I can't even justify my time for that. I've provided books for free to members, and I've charged for them. Really depends on where I'm at. I appreciate all the books I've purchased from mkb in the past. It's my choice to pay or not.

That's pretty much my perspective. I missed FCBD and thought I wasn't gonna get either issue. Ten bucks shipped seems reasonable to me, and I'm the target market. I've purchased stuff from Michael before and he's always been very accommodating with price and such.

I've sent people stuff without charge, but really, $10 doesn't even cover the hassle of packing them up and getting it shipped. We're all busy people.
