How i started with comics and got into Valiant
Hello, my real name is not Thomas but that does not really matter.
I am a relatively new comic book reader from germany. I got into comics around 2012, when DCs new 52 started out in germany (the german publications are always one year or more behind). It was also during that time that i realized that my town actually had a comic book store ( who knew?). I started with reading some DC titles like Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Justice League Dark, Earth-2. I tried to stay away from the big titles and the events. But then in 2013 i stoped with DC altogether, because i really didn't like the direction of the new 52 (i read some old DC Comics by that time, THE NEW 52 DESTROYED LOBO), Batman fatigue hit me really hard, he is like in one third of DCs titles,( I don't say the Batman books are bad, i just really don't care about Batman, the animated series + justice league cartoon, i finished around that time, where enough batman for me), and the constant creator abuse that was going on since the start of new 52. I decided to never touch anything related to the new 52 ever again. I read some Marvel over the years, but just like with DC i really did not care about the mainstream books and tried to stay away from them and away from the events. I read some Deadpool, got really tiered of him quite quickly. Now I am reading mostly the Peter David stuff from Marvel.
In 2013 i heard some things about a comic book called Quantum & Woody. I read some reviews and most critics seemed to like it(after reading some posts about it on this board, i learned that a lot of you here seem to hate it). I bought Quantum and Woody and Eternal Warrior( one of my acquaintances said the name alone sounded like [90s] *SQUEE*, but then ended up liking the comic more than i did), I started reading Unity (basically the whole second wave of new valiant titles in 2013). In 2014 i got Rai, The Delinquents, Armor Hunters, which was the first event of which i bought all tie ins( i usally try to avoid events altogether but this one made me buy the tie ins). I just recently caught up with Harbinger on the trades. After Armor Hunters i will get X-O Manowar regularly starting with #0 in October.
I am really enjoying Harbinger, Rai, Unity and even Quantum & Woody. I really like the work of Clayton Crain, Dough Braithwaithe, Matt Kindt, Robert Venditti, Joshua Dysart and James Asmus.
The Valiant comics are the comics i look forward to the most, twice a month, when the US Comic shipment arrives here. (IF IT ACTUALLY ARRIVES HERE DIAMOND)
Looking forward to more stuff from Valiant. Currently I am trying to get the first 6 trades of X-O and maybe start with the Archer and Armstrong trades, once i have enough money.
So how long can i stay on this board until some people nuke me for liking Quantum & Woody?

You are probably safe from that sort of hazing over liking a book that is not as popular on this board. Quantum and Woody was nominated for six harvey awards so you aren't the only person in the world that likes it.Thomas wrote:So how long can i stay on this board until some people nuke me for liking Quantum & Woody?

A very belated welcome to you, good fellow! Glad you are enjoying Valiant over in Germany, and yeah - no one will hassle you for liking Q&W here - it's just not that kind of crowd around these parts (at least it is if you can ignore Dunlows twitchy, neurotic obsession with anti-Canadian-ism )

Welcome, Thomas!
Q&W has quite the following out there, but one would not say that judging by these boards.

Welcome to the boards Thomas. I am also new here. Out of curiosity, I'm assuming your comics are printed in German. I spent 3 weeks in the Netherlands in my younger days and while i was there i had the opportunity to visit Germany and was able to purchase some spiderman comics in German. I don't speak for anyone else but i would love to be able to have some X-O books in German as well. You might be able to make a profit selling them as well. Just a thought as i am always looking for rare and unique items to add to my collection.

There are no german Valiant Comics and there won't be in the near future.AaronofDacia wrote:Welcome to the boards Thomas. I am also new here. The company that publishes the german publications of most american comics (like marvel and dc), panini comics, apparently isn't interested in publishing Valiant comics in germany. Atleast that's what I got from reading their forums. I think they started printing them in france and italy, but not in germany. I get my comics from my LCS and they order them from diamond. I pay more than the cover price for the comics, in euro, because my LCS wouldn't make any profit otherwise. Ordering them costs a lot, plus taxes, and since the euro rate is dwindling they had to increase the price. Here it's 1$ = 1,10 €. Also they can't return any comics since that wouldn't be profitable.
In most cases the german publication is a lot cheaper. A single german Issue contains two american Issues and costs up to 5€ . Trades are also a bit cheaper. But since panini doesn't publish Valiant comics here I have to get the american issues.
