Re: question about bulk buys...
That's an easy run of books to sell, too. I'd imagine that Amazing and Uncanny are some of the easiest to sell.
I'm looking at a nice run of early Uncanny, but it's $15 a book, which I think is fair, but certainly not a deal given the large number of books I'd need to buy.

Re: question about bulk buys...
That's part of the problem, is he has a number of books that many people want which makes it easy for him to pick/choose his price. He also has a number of other big Marvel books......I'm thinking about making him an offer on everything but it's hard for me to really get a bargain because he has so many interested parties. I live in a city with the highest median income in Canada; where a number of public servants earn very, very good salaries. Although I doubt there's a lot of people that can just shell out several thousand for a collection, he won't have a lot of difficultly selling individual books for good amounts.nycjadie wrote:That's an easy run of books to sell, too. I think at that price, I'd only get them if I really wanted them and I could afford it without selling any.
I hear you on local competition. It's the same here.

For what it's worth, I would let it pass for the time being and let all the others trip over this one - you may get into a bidding war with others or at the end of the day yourself only - the seller clearly knows what he has. To court a favour, recommend to him which ones to sell individually/in runs for higher return/maximize his profit, in order to to drive up the prices, and knock the buyers/competition out for your next one that will come up.GGSAE wrote:That's part of the problem, is he has a number of books that many people want which makes it easy for him to pick/choose his price. The other side is follow your gut. If its worth it, not just from a price point of view, go for it but don't look back. But then again you know this already...
Although I suspect what you say is true (doubt there's a lot of people that can just shell out several thousand for a collection) some like you and I can, so there will be bound to be others. We also have a few solid LCS' in our area, reputable and stable for over 20 years that also bite into the collection buying market in our area.
we may have tripped over each other a few times in the past although I cover mostly south of the city towards Brockville/Prescott and have not bought a collections in over 5 years. Some of my best purchase were over 25 years ago...
Best of luck

Re: question about bulk buys...
Thanks for your insight. I'm actually going to back-down on this, at 2k I was kind of on the fence, but now that I think about it I'm gonna hold off. I have other sources to buy collections of people with great books, so I might just revisit those later. I also know that new opportunities come up all the time. I agree it's better to walk than get into a *SQUEE* match with a bunch of buyers.
I've only started buying collections in the last year +, so this is still somewhat new to me.

That larger collection with silver age stuff was the same way for me. I knew I wouldn't make money on it, and that if I wanted a break even proposition, I'd have to work pretty hard at it, but I really wanted those silver books. It'll probably be a few more months before I'm close to breaking even, maybe even 3-4.

My collection this week was really special. The original owner of about 35 golden age Little Lulu books from the 40s and early 50s, plus a few other great books. The condition of the books are good. The price paid? Zero!

Re: question about bulk buys...
I look forward to it. I bought about 5 $100 collections recently. Nothing super high grade, but some great older minor keys.

Re: question about bulk buys...
Details tomorrow hopefully it should all go through, suffice to say this is the biggest cash outlay for me by far so I'm taking some risk. I will also be looking to sell other comics I have just because I need some money.

Re: question about bulk buys...
Hey guys, I'll try to post everything tonight; I took photos with my phone to save time, but you'll see many of these books can/should have their own scan because it doesn't do them justice. I got really lucky with this lot, the seller was a really good guy, aware of the value of the books but it seems he's getting all out of collecting. Having said that he threw in some really nice freebees, below is a complete long-box of all utimate books (huge run of x-men, spiderman, ff, civil war books, etc). There was also a heavy box crammed full of full-back along with an equivalent amount of egerber mylars. There was also another book of low grade books thrown in that I don't know if there's anything of value, they're all silver age misc. books.
