Manhattan Projects #1, which is from Image and hits the stands Wednesday, is selling fast on eBay. I'm not sure it'll go up in value, but at this point it bears watching. It bears reading, too.

Is that the Hickman book?StarBrand wrote:Manhattan Projects #1, which is from Image and hits the stands Wednesday, is selling fast on eBay. I'm not sure it'll go up in value, but at this point it bears watching. It bears reading, too.
In all honesty, nearly all the Image books are being focused on. The chances of any of them being worth anything are slim to none. There are many that I'm looking forward to reading, but there are only a few that I will keep my eye on in regards to spec. If they aren't completely under the radar, they aren't going to do much more than 2-3x cover price nowadays and that's just not worth it.
I can't believe Fatale is still at 3-4x cover. That book is destined for bargain bins in the future.

Yes, that's the Hickman book. It looks like an interesting read. If it goes up in value, I agree it will likely drop after a bit.400yrs wrote:Is that the Hickman book?StarBrand wrote:Manhattan Projects #1, which is from Image and hits the stands Wednesday, is selling fast on eBay. Hickman's become a very good sci-fi writer --- well worth checking out.

They've sold 1 so far at that price. Another copy sold for 9.99 incl shipping. Several other sellers on eBay are now asking over 7.00 per copy.StarBrand wrote:Thecargohold has raised their price on Manhattan Projects 1 to 7.99.

This seller has sold 4 Peter Panzerfaust 1s so far at 7.99 ea.400yrs wrote:Keep an eye on Peter Panzerfaust. I didn't bother buying it because I've read both previous books by the writer, but wasn't very impressed and the preview page art didn't do anything for me. However, it's doing well so far.
Word of warning---- I get more of a Skullkickers vibe from this than something like Chew or Morning Glories.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
To me, the prices on the Fatales are almost a sure-fire sign that the speculator age has returned.
I haven't read the book because although Brubaker is one of my favorites, alot of his stuff just reads the same to me and the preview didn't convince me that this would be any different. Yes, it's Brubaker's first Image book, but it didn't exactly sneak up on anyone. The #1 issue sold about 21K copies. That's nearly the same as what his Criminal book did. Criminal never really did anything on the market.
I'm convinced it's people ordering these things and then trying to flip them that is driving up the price. I'm interested to see the sales numbers on the next bunch of issues. If they drop, it's spec.
And the main tell for me is that unlike Chew and Morning Glories, no one is talking about the story in this book.
I expect Saga will be the same situation. There will be enough copies to satisfy demand, but the market will be driven up on spec. Possibly moreso because it's BKV.
Granted, this is on a much smaller scale than the 90s, but the whole industry is a fraction of what it was and the whole "20 year cycle" thing is happening.
I have my eye on a few sleepers, but I only buy extra copies after I read the stories.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
It's *SQUEE* nuts! The second issue is also going for $40+ because it's the first appearance of the group - Glenn, Shane, Carl, Lori, etc. The first print of #2 is a $1K book all of a sudden. WTF?
This shouldn't be happening at all. This defies comic book logic. I know that TWD is popular, but for the Weeklies to be going nuts, this tells me that there are tons and tons of people..... people (non-comic collectors / readers) jumping into this thing. I'd like to be able to blame this on spec, but knowing the quality of the series..... and the fact that the trades have always sold insanely well I don't think this is spec. I think these are actual people coming in seeking to put together full runs or at least get the issues that they think are important.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
im ganna be tearing my new comics pile apart theres like 100 issues of weekly scattered in there.
too bad death of dracula is not a biggie anymore
the specuator market is rising again as are print runs, stuff printed in low numbers will insalate itself to a degree, but mainstream stuff as it starts heading north of 100k a month will drop hard down the road, WD the regular series i have been buying 3 of each issue for years now hold for 12 months then lot them out for good money

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
the thing with WD books is, that out here in So cal, there are just not many in the "wild". They are all gone. And even just a few months ago/a year ago many shops only ordered a few copies of WD books.
Just for an example:
WD #69 had 23,695 sold in Jan 2010
WD #25 had 19,331 sold in Jan 2006
WD #15 had 15,461 sold in Feb 2005
WD #5 had 8,829 sold in March 2004
And how many of these books got destroyed, given away, thrown away? Even a year ago I was getting a bunch of these in $1 bins, like a lot. Now stores have like issue #55 for like $8 if they even have them.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
The topic of the destruction or otherwise "lost" comics has always intrigued me. Take Bloodshot: Last Stand, for example, because there you have an "estimated" 7.5K copies, right? I've seen them go for as little as 10 to as much as 45. The very fact there are only "about" 7.5K means that there are less than 7.5K complete runs of standard issue Valiant to be had out there. How many got lost or damaged? 500? 1.5k? Let's say 6.8K are still around. Given the way people hoard, I'm going to say that means less than 6.5K runs are to be had. In the case of TWD, that # 5 is the lowest print run. So, we're looking at probably 8K or less potential runs to be had. Paying 8 or more for those early books isn't out of the realm of reason, given the scarcity + demand.Elveen wrote:the thing with WD books is, that out here in So cal, there are just not many in the "wild".
