Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Agreed. I had borrowed a set of The Walking Dead tpbs to read several months ago and have been looking to pick up my own set. Amazon has them for about $8.50 each (for a total of $127.50 shipped), but most lots on eBay are going over $200 for all 15. WTF?! Granted, some may be 1st print tpb sets, I didn't look that close, but that's the only reason I can conceive. Or laziness.[/quote]dbngaa wrote:I am just saying buyers need to educate themselves on other options - I have seen things go on Ebay that I paid almost 50-60% less on this site - some people just go to Ebay and that's it. Good for the seller, but for this site I show options and there are better - never had a bad experience on that site or Atomic Avenue.
I think there is a bigger demand (= more $$$$) for 1st print TPBs. But I agree, some people do not make the best economic decisions.

I'm sure there is, and that's probably the case with these - 1st prints vs current prints. Similarly confusing though are the 2 or 3 lots of WD Weekly issues that are nearing $300 for the first 10-12 issues, when there are 3 complete 52 issue sets available for $300-350. I guess I should link to these to illustrate my point, and I didn't mean to turn this into a "Crazy eBay" thread, but I've been perusing TWD items today and found this interesting.

This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.

A question for those of you who follow TWD books --> We know everything is going absolutely nuts right now, but is this it? Is this the peak? Is it going to crash? Is there a higher peak possible at some point? If so, when?
I have an opinion, but I'm interested to hear some of the dudes around here first.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
supply and demand most of the books have super low print runs through 50 the show has like 13 million viewers i think all the books above 20 - 50 have a lot of up to go yet. 1 might keep rising the rest will plateau, but long as the show keeps trucking it will grow, the first issue with the gov. will go north as soon as season 3 gets going.

Honestly, how can anyone know. Here is my perspective.....
1) there are a relatively small amount of most of these books.
2) The show is getting/already is huge (with more people getting involved by the day, this might be the MOST important point to consider)
3) These books appeal to two groups of peeps: comic readers/collectors and fans of the show (old/new readers)
4) The books are similar enough to the show to maintain interest and different enough to be a completely different thing.
5) Most people are naturally collectors. So when they get one or a few of the books, a part of them wants them all.
6) The 2nd season ended GREAT and there will be BIG hype for the 3rd season. Unless they REALLY mess up (and what we have seen so far I REALLY doubt it) a 4th season is almost guaranteed. (the finale of season 3 set records for viewership) So there is at a least a year of crazy attention/hype just about guaranteed.
7) the books are HIGH quality. So it's just not hot because someone (Wizard back in the day) told us.
With all of that being said..... I still have no idea. I remember when I first went to SDCC (this is the point I consider I got "really" into all things comics) and TWD #1 was like a $100 book. I thought, "dang! that's a grip". Then I remember it being like $160, then $200, then $300........
And I thought...... I should have bought the copies I saw at $100. (hahahahaha)
Then it kept going. Around this time I started to really buy WD books. The early ones were out of my budget at the time, but I remember getting a stack of #10s (like 7-8 of them) for $3.
Fast forward a bit (I had been buying a bunch of WD books, mostly the keys but also starting getting just a bunch of them) one night I was checking ebay..... and I saw a WD lot. It was #1-9 1st prints for $600 shipped. This was when WD #1 was about $300. I thought, hey this might be good for me. Then I looked at the listing and there were TWO #1s (both the white and black cover). I hit that buy it now, and it was the MOST I have spent at one time by faaaaaaaaaaaar. I was thinking, I can sell both #1s for what I'm paid and then I have #2-9 to make the profit on.
But you know what..... I decided to hold on to them. Now, TWD #1 is a 1K + book. (just last weekend there was 2 WD #1 that sold for 1K +). How much do you think a WD #1 will go for right before SDCC? $1,200, $1,500, 2K? I know that a dealer I trust sold a WD #1 for 1K last year at SDCC so Kirkman could sign it and then get it CGCed, what about this year?
Personally I think there is at LEAST a year left of crazy prices. But if Kirkman keeps the book going strong (I have not read the last 2 books, but I VERY interested in what he was starting in the #90s) who know what will happen. I don't ever see these books bottoming out, (as long as collectibles like these have any value). They are just too high quality and too rare. Can they keep going up? I think so.... At some point they will have to plateau, but when and at how much? I saw lot of like #15-18 go for like $150 just a bit ago. Cray to the Z!
but the REAL CRAZY thing has been the other books. #19, #27, Weekly #1 (#19 and #27). I can't tell you how many of these books I have passed up before. Just a week before the finale, I passed on about 4-5 WD weekly #19 for $1.

Bottom line, my answer right now is that I think these books have long lasting real value. It is the perfect storm: low numbers, a great (possibly iconic) product, quality TV crossover, and CRAZY hype.
So... when will #1 peak? I have no idea. But I can say that I have not put mine up for sale yet. I AM going to sell them, just not right now.
Lastly, Just a few print run numbers:
WD #15 15,638
WD #31 21,366
WD#47 22,022
WD #67 24,655
WD #76 26,553
There are not a lot of these books.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I wouldn't be surprised if we find that there is a lot of irrational exuberance going on with Walking Dead. I think it is a bubble, I just don't know how long the bubble will last. I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts another year or two though, due to the TV show.
I don't think the price for #1 will drop much, if at all. That book is way too rare and way too key. WD#1 will be THE key book of the 20-'naughts for the rest of comic collecting, like Hulk #181 or TNMT #1.
I was gonna write something about how the irrational exuberance for "keys" like #19 and #27 will wear off, but I'm not sure. Supply and demand. There will be lots of supply, and lots of demand.
I think #19 and #27 will mellow. These weren't crazy priced before the characters were on the show, so the spike is fueled by show. When the show ends, this fuel may end.

yeah I know I could get it from FeEbay, no question about that. I'd prefer to find it at an LCS, though the aforementioned may be my only alternative.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
TWD prices are crazy right now but deals are still out there. 2 weeks ago I found a VF+ copy of #27 in the back issue bin for $5. I sold it for $127.50. I also picked up Weekly 1, 2-10 (multiples), 19, 27 for $3.50 each at various LCS.
Not sure if they will still go up some more. My plan is to sell some of the extras and keep the better copies for now.

Me too.Elveen wrote: I have been thinking about this a bunch.

I'm too tired to put together solid thoughts tonight, but in general, most of your comments are in line with my thoughts. There are some things which I believe are very bubblish, some books that aren't doing anything that have future potential and other books that I'm not sure will ever come down considerably in price.Elveen wrote:Personally I think there is at LEAST a year left of crazy prices.
I'll put together my thoughts when I'm not worn out.

It's the 1st new Harley Quinn, not that means anything, but someone must be buying them.
Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
It appears that Harley Quinn is the new breakout underground star in comics much like Deadpool was back in the'98-'00 era. Maybe due to the Batman cartoon.ian_house wrote:WHY?!StarBrand wrote:Suicide Squad 6 sells for 29.99.

Her first appearance in Batman Adventures #12 is steadily on the rise:

Seems like all the series she's appeared in sell consistently at a decent price.
Apparently she will appear in the new Batman movie. I should have known.
