Isn't #182 the weirdest thing...? He appears in three panels or so on the first page, and that's that.inmyblood wrote:I usually refer Hulk 180-182 as "Wolverine's first appearance trilogy".

Well I hit up my lcs and added a few more first appearances. he had a very nice high grade Iron Man 55 and I picked up the The New Teen Titans #3 (first deathstroke) and Dc Comics Presents Supermand And Green Lantern #26 (first new teen titans, ist raven, cyborg, trigon).
Now I need :
Wolverine
Punisher
Darkseid
Abomination
I would love Green Goblin, Mysterio, Scorpion and Kraven but I feel ike WOlverine and Punisher that those may stay out of my reach for sometime.

Cool! How much did you pay for the IM #55?Kino wrote:Well I hit up my lcs and added a few more first appearances. he had a very nice high grade Iron Man 55 and I picked up the The New Teen Titans #3 (first deathstroke) and Dc Comics Presents Supermand And Green Lantern #26 (first new teen titans, ist raven, cyborg, trigon).

It was real cheap. You see I work shift work and the comic shop will be having a 50%off sale on the day that I work and since I am good customer and will not be able to make the sale, the owner said I could do it today. I paid $47.50. The book's condition was very nice. Looks like a solid 9.0 and maybe a 9.2. I checked out ebay and there is one copy that is a hair nicer on the cover than the one I have and it has a BIN price of $350. No doubt this is the best deal I have gotten on a book.
They didn't have the Tales to Astonish 90 that I am looking for but there is no way I would pass up the chance for the first appearance of Drax and Thanos.

Not bad! I'd have had a hard time paying that much for it, but then, I'm a cheap basturd, so....Kino wrote:It was real cheap. A friend of mine works at the store and I started taking his advice on getting the harder to find bronze and silver age books. One thing I have found is that if you look around enough some good ones can be found at affordable prices. I got lucky today but I have been looking around for some key 1st appearances.

My LCS has Astonish 90 & 91 in solid VG/VG+ range for less than $10.00 each. I think it's $6+tax for 91 and a buck or so more for 90. Are you only after high grade issues? If not, I could pick these up for you and mail them along. Btw, the Gil Kane cover art on 91 is gorgeous you should definitely pick up the 2nd part of the Abomination intro.
Sadly, the younger crowd focuses on current variants and passes up these very affordable silver age gems

You're about the variants. There were quite a few "hot" variants on the wall and I had the option of getting Civil War 1 white sketched variant of $75 before the 50%, while I know that variant is expensive it will not be as satisfying to own as a 1st appearance bronze/silver age character especially considering I already own the regular Civil War 1. Not to mention there will be variants on all Civil War issues.

I've personally found that it's always a good idea to grab nice Silver Age books. As we all learned from the early 90's boom and bust, I can tell you that books that hit today and skyrocket in price may very well plummet sooner than later, but the Silver Age (and Golden Age if you can find it) stuff seems to hold its value pretty well.

My advice? LET them focus and waste their money on silly brand new "hot" variants.Kino wrote:hulk181man wrote:My LCS has Astonish 90 & 91 in solid VG/VG+ range for less than $10.00 each. You're definitely right and one thing I got back from reading these silver and bronze age books was just how much I miss non hyped quality written and drawn books. Matter of fact its got me energized into looking into more of the Captain Marvel and Warlock books. I started a list of 1st appearance characters that I want but now am looking to pick up some more issues from those books.
You guys/gals remember the days when there were no variants? I do and wish they would come back.

And yup.
The Starlin saga, basically encompassing IM #55, #56, Captain Marvel #25-#34, Strange Tales #178-181, Marvel Feature #12, Warlock #9-#15, Avengers Annual #7, and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2 was one of the best sagas of the 1970's.
I can't imagine waiting the four years it took for that tale to unfold!

Sure ya can. I remember back when the Mutant Massacre started then went through Fall of the Mutants and really ended after Inferno. Those 3 vents took about 4 years. Back then there was a clear vision of where the story was to go and each year led up to a certain point with the culmination of the one yearly big event. Back then you really only had one big event.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Yup.Kino wrote:You're definitely right and one thing I got back from reading these silver and bronze age books was just how much I miss non hyped quality written and drawn books. That Starlin saga was unbelievable. To this day I can just sit and gaze at his artwork on the CM and Warlock issues....just....WOW!

Useless trivia re: JIm Starlin...did you know, he learned how to draw by tracing over comic books?hulk181man wrote:ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Yup.Kino wrote:You're definitely right and one thing I got back from reading these silver and bronze age books was just how much I miss non hyped quality written and drawn books. Off and on lurking. Got settled in after war( Yugo and Afghanistan), graduation, hurricane and a new job. Most of the time I just read about what others are saying, especially about Valiants. After a 6 or 7 year hiatus from collecting collects, I'm back collecting regularly. You'll note that my first foray back was to complete my X-O collection although I completed quite a bit of the Valiant universe. So I spent alot of time just reading to catch up. I feel at this time I can actually contribute and discuss comics now after spending the time catching up.
Not only that but I find the people here seem to have the type of personality that I can relate to. People here seem to be head and shoulders above some other boards I have seen.
Case in point I have noted that on another comic board some people have used the words "freedom fighter" and Al-Qaida in the same sentence and yes they referred to my enemy as such. Thats a major no-no with with a intel veteran like myself sent to fight over there. I am very sensitive to anything resembling anti intelligence and military personel.
Back to comics, Look at some of the topics I posted and you can see a wealth of info you all on this board have contributed. The discussions you guys on here in just the two threads that I have posted recently are better than some other boards will post up in a week.
I mean how many times has one seen posts about Draw me such and such or whine about Austen's work on the X-men or constantly crying about Hush being used too much. Or have to constantly see people whining about Jason Todd coming back. After a few days of seeing posts and threads like that I was like "Please God give me a F***ing break!" That was as painful as seeing Rob Liefeld's artwork constantly during the 90s.
Honestly though you have good people on this board that are knowledgable and caring about this hobby and I can relate to that. Coming back to comic collecting felt like well, coming home. I feel more talkative when I feel like I am home.
I go to other boards such as mustang and gun forums as those are my other two hobbies. I usually not too talkative there either but I getting there.

I fear that we all know each other too well sometimes, and have exhausted all there is to talk about, so it's nice to get a fresh perspective from someone who has something more cogent to say than "Rob Liefeld RAWWWWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKKKKSSSSSS!!!"
