Any advice for where to start with marvel after 20 years?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

Saga is certainly on my list I have been making to check out, it comes up in so many posts, I can't ignore it.

I will buy everything Valiant puts out, no worries there :thumb:

Thanks for the DC recommendations, I have actually already added them to my list from seeing your signature in posts :)

Try Chew, too. Excellent book and after you check it out, tell me if I'm right or wrong about the creative team being perfect for Archer & Armstrong.

Thanks for these, I was looking for some other x-men to add to the list and I didn't know Grant Morrison did the X-men, I am a huge fan of his work on The Preacher Legends of the Dark Knight and Doom Patrol :)

Edit to remove a mistake.
My brain *SQUEE* itself earlier and thought Grant Morrison was Garth Ennis :D

Thanks, Chew is another of those books that people seem to mention often, definitely adding it to my list I am making here. It is getting to be a massive list of non-Valiant reading material!

I will certainly let you know what I think after I read it, but it could be awhile.

I'll second the New X-Men Morrision recommendation - a definite high point for the X-books in the last 20 years. I just re-read Old Man Logan last week - that story rocks too :thumb:

I checked into these today, and noticed that Yost didn't do anything on the Uncanny X-force title (according to wikipedia anyway...) Are you referring to another title perhaps? If you remember, let me know please.

Thanks again :D

Christopher Yost did a run of X-Force starting in 2008, it went for 20-30 issues or so. I remember enjoying it, at least the first half that I read.

It was followed by Uncanny X-Force, written by Rick Remender. It was also very well acclaimed.

Here's one Marvel suggestion, and it is about 20 years old...Marvels, by Busiek and Ross. If you've not read it, do so. Now.

nscc wrote:Hi all!

I used to be a huge marvel (and Valiant, DC, Image, Dark Horse, etc) fan before... well.. the comic industry went to crap in the 90's.

The last thing I really remember with the spiderman books is the horrible Scarlet Spidey/Ben Riley story. It made me drop Spiderman since I had to buy all the issues.

As far as the X-men, I stopped reading the x books when wolverine got his Adamantium removed by magneto (terrible spoiler I know!) and then I read some of Wolverine after he left the x-men.

Since then, 20 years has gone by, I've read a little about it, civil war etc, but my main concern now is...

With the reboot, is there any "required reading" or should I just jump into the new series' with the #1's and go?

I would really like to not have to buy a bunch of titles, so another question would be, are they generally self contained, or do I need to get 5 X-books or 6 Spidey titles to get the full story each month?

That is really what drove me from Marvel/DC... needing to buy everything :(

I have a real nice list of independents grabbed from other threads to start getting some trades for, but am still thinking about getting back into Marvel (and maybe DC), if the stories are good and if I dont have to break the bank.

I guess the above questions also apply to DC too as I stopped sometime after the reign of supermen and knightfall/quest/end.

Thanks alot for your thoughts on this, as there has been TOO much content out since 1993.

:D
You can basically start with Avengers vol. 3 post Busiek era as the start of all modern Marvel continuity and then go from there. Some of the ideas were terrific, while the execution wasn't so hot (Secret Invasion is an example), other ideas were mediocre and basically mired in fan emotion (Civil War) that carried the characters personalities for years, and other events looked pretty but were lame (World War Hulk).

Either way though, Bendis era Marvel since about 2003 or so has been sort of a cool continuity fest of events over the years. I'd start your collection with the Avengers Disassembled stuff from volume 3. Actually, you might even want to start with the Busiek era of Avengers stuff which precludes Bendis's stuff, but it makes for great classic comic reading. Depending on where you want to build, look for the Heroe's Return Banners on the books, or the Avengers Disassembled banners.

The input I've give you here is sort of centered on Marvel Earth heroes and some of the ground guys... X-Men had a world of weird continuity in the last 10-12 years that you may or may not like.

That is great, thanks for reminding me of this. I always loved the art seen in these books. I had a poster for the book with the human torch on the cover. I flipped through one before, but never owned it when I was still collecting in the 90's. I will HAVE to grab this one.
