Re: Valiant brings back chromium covers for Armor Hunters
I won't be chasing down the Chromium covers but if I see some at retail NOT jacked up by my LCS then I might consider it.
I just want the story.

Re: Valiant brings back chromium covers for Armor Hunters
I'd pay 5.99 for non-chromium issues of every valiant title.. If there were no variants except the occasional gold and they used good paper and cover stock.

It's not that I don't have an avatar... I've just been working on it for the last few hundred years.

Great - more gimmicks and a high cover price.

I quit buying most of the variant covers, but I'll probably pick up a few of these.

I am pretty excited about this and hope to snag at least one of each. I'm a sucker for gimmicks when it comes to Valiant.

I don't suppose I mind at this point. If they look great I may buy a few.

I'm down for these. I have a few of the VH1 chromes and would love to get these.

... and the milking of the die-hard fans continues...
this has gotten really ugly, especially since unity #1.
but i guess, if you can't attract new readers and come up with exciting new concepts (instead of keep rehashing old ones), if you only cater to the nostalgia and die-hard fans, who are more than willing to shed their money for variants and gimmicks and re-interpretations of their fav characters from childhood, i guess this is the way to go for vei.
lost all hope this venture can turn into something memorable (like the original first valiant years).
really, really dissapointed.
however, good luck with the milking-strategy, vei, and goodbye from me.

Um, I'm pretty sure there are new people reading VEI, and I am also sure that all comicbook companies mix a bit of nostalgia and innovation together to survive in a, dare I say, highly demanding comicbook industry.krylox wrote:... and the milking of the die-hard fans continues...

If VEI's release of a chromium cover causes your to stop collecting and/or reading their product, then I guess they simply failed to consider your feelings when they looked at the sales projections and data. Valiant has released fantastic work, both artistically and written since 2012. Their product has been top quality month after month (a point that both the critics, fans, and sales have agreed on).
Sorry if their innovations and/or desire to increase revenue to expand and grow as a company while meeting the needs of both new and old fans causes you to be "disappointed", but I do want you to know that you will be "missed" by all I'm sure.

My initial thought is
But the xo and bloodshot ones should look really cool. Maybe they could do an all chromium issue to do something new. Even like an 8 or 16 page story one shot would be cool to see.

Krylox, I don't see how these chromium covers are your breaking point. Did you think Invincible and TWD were jumping the shark when they released chromium covers? It's something fun if someone wants them (like me). The only variants I have that were above cover are a few golds and the Shadowman 1:20 and 1:50 that I got from Paradise as part of a set (I really got them for the print he did). I would say that the OCD 100% completionist collector would be the only type of fan that would be upset by the overwhelming number of variants. Those collectors probably account for less than 1% of VEI's customer base (and probably 75% of this boards members). I really don't care if it upsets you - it is obviously working to make VEI money and in the case of the chromium covers, is something that really excites me.

Good luck finding another independent comic book company that puts out quality material and doesn't put out any variants.krylox wrote: however, good luck with the milking-strategy, vei, and goodbye from me.

Kind of underwhelmed at the news. Gimmicks over content?

VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

That too. Honestly prior to all these announcements, things felt clear for me as a reader. Since them, not so much.jedimarley wrote:Eternal Warrior goes on a undisclosed hiatus. But we have chromium covers.

Now the chromium cover thing is not unclear, but it seems that VEI have gone into over-drive about announcing things so much that the overall picture is less clear. Steady build seems to have given way to something much different.

there are enough quality series at image, dark horse etc which don't rely on sales gimmicks most of the time.MarkRoseHFX wrote:Good luck finding another independent comic book company that puts out quality material and doesn't put out any variants.krylox wrote: however, good luck with the milking-strategy, vei, and goodbye from me.

Re: Valiant brings back chromium covers for Armor Hunters
Image and Dark Horse while they are still independent publishers aren't a very fair comparison to VEI. Image has 10X the market share VEI does and Dark Horse has 4X. They've also both been publishing for 20+ years straight.krylox wrote:there are enough quality series at image, dark horse etc which don't rely on sales gimmicks most of the time.MarkRoseHFX wrote:Good luck finding another independent comic book company that puts out quality material and doesn't put out any variants.krylox wrote: however, good luck with the milking-strategy, vei, and goodbye from me.

Re: Valiant brings back chromium covers for Armor Hunters
At first all the variants bothered me a bit but now I am okay with it. Whatever it takes for VEI to continue to produce a good product. Heck, I unfortunately, don't buy monthlies and wait for trades because it's more cost effective. My wife's education is getting in the way of my comics habit.
I've never understood the 90's backlash -- I loved all the "gimmick" covers then and still do, I still love flannel and 90's alternative music, bubble gum in baseball cards and Jodeci's first album always makes me nostalgic for the early Valiant days.
Alright, I'm going to go listen to a little Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Besides it can't be any worse than DC doing the 3D covers again for September. If there is one company at the moment milking fans for all they're worth with covers it's them not VEI.lorddunlow wrote:Amen, DBS!DirtbagSailor wrote:Um, I'm pretty sure there are new people reading VEI, and I am also sure that all comicbook companies mix a bit of nostalgia and innovation together to survive in a, dare I say, highly demanding comicbook industry.krylox wrote:... and the milking of the die-hard fans continues...

Re: Valiant brings back chromium covers for Armor Hunters
I might get a few if they look cool ... kind of indifferent to whether it's a good thing or not. This is just the way they are going to do things. If it's actually helping them stay afloat, then great. Thankfully there are still people willing to spend $300 on Unity 1 variants sight unseen so at least an LCS or two can make a buck.
