Anni wrote the start of the Book of the Geomancer in LOTG and it was definitely a book, so if the codex is the same text then it would have to be a copy of some sort

Vesta as a Geomancer, eh? :hm: Sure, I could see it.
You know, I wasn't even thinking that far along about it until I read your post - I guess I was automatically assuming a Geomancer would only have ties to Gilad, and therefore wouldn't be involved with Antoniis like this.

BUT...

If the Vestal order (or even just the woman at the head of the order) is tied to or one is of them is actually the Geomancer for that era, and the scrolls are an early form of the BotG... Then what are they/is she really up to? Why not send Gilad into Brittania to deal with whatever that gaping maw thingie is?

Maybe there is something more sinister going on. Maybe these Vestal Virgins are like a dark Geomancer cult, or perhaps they gain power from the Nergal Death Cult somehow instead. :hm:
I wasn't suggesting that the blonde in the comic is actually a Geomancer, but that the 'Roman goddess Vesta' who started their Order may have been. Or Vesta could have been a psiot telepath who tried to write down the patterns between what people thought and how they actually acted??

Great first issue, this is EASILY the best of the new launches. After a lacklustre Gen Zero, Faith and A&A it's vital the Britannia, Savage and Harbinger deliver the goods! Milligan and Ryp's art worked excellently together and I can see this being similar to Divinity in the sense it becomes a set of mini-series with the same creative team. One thing did take me out of the story was the reference to Britannia being "cold, warm beer and punks"! Punks?!? I think Milligan has a slight obsession with punks :? And whilst we're at it, wouldn't all beer be warm in Roman days... Or did they have fridges?!?

Very happy with this first issue 4/5 :thumb:

Definitely. I remember thinking I'd found some new clue here.

This has been one of the most enjoyable reads Valiant has put out. I really enjoyed the story.

4.5/5

Bravo Milligan, JJR and Jordie

This is one of the best opening issues I have ever read from VEI ... completely fascinating story, intriguing characters, and some of the best art i've seen from a VEI book.

I loved the introductory sequence giving a little history of the Vestal Virgins in relation to the story ... and ending with a historical essay on the actual history of the Vestal Virgins from a professor which gave the book, a really smart, classy touch.

I'm also wondering how this will eventually tie into the present day Valiant universe ... and how and IF it will tie into current, established Valiant characters, places and lore. I think there are a lot of great possibilities ... and the story lent itself to so much great speculations.

The deadside.

Nergal.

Geomancer tie-in

The Angela Dimension.

Antonius getting consumed in the Codex ... was similar to Hwen getting consumed by the Ancient Scrolls.

Whatever the theory of where this might be going and how it connects to the rest of the Valiant universe ... what is so exciting is that this seems to be definitely expanding the dark, magical corner of the Valiant universe.

With the eventual re-introduction of Shadowman ... I think you have the start of a potential vibrant corner of the universe that will be for smart, dark storytelling for mature readers.
Ha! Yeah! Nice! Any of those dudes in your head mosh?! - Flamingo

I really hope they make Shadowman as dark and mature as this title, if not even more horror oriented.

+1 agreed! Amything less than a more mature title and I'll probably struggle to get into Shadowman. The Acclaim Ennis run was enjoyable.

fantastic issue and best thing i've read by milligan in years. THIS is the kind of milligan i hoped to happen when he was announced on shadowman. however, with this (and some other accumulated stuff from the past few years, mainly written by dysart ;) ) vei is entering the phase of becoming truly relevant to the comic book history, producing the stuff which will be talked about years from now.

:o

This was brutal. Everything I expect from a mature, prestige-format series by a writer that can write Horror stuff.
It is light-years away from everything VEI published but I'm very, very curious to see where/how does it connect with the rest of the universe.
Great stuff.
