Re: Harbinger Renegade
I gave it a 'C.' Contrary to it's faults (which I'm not gonna list, because everyone else has in this and the "Rafer" thread), I'm actually enjoying the book quite a bit. I've reread issues 1-6 and loved them more the second time. I don't think he's doing anything too interesting with the characters, but he's got the voices down and I love the epic feel he gives it.
With that being said, nothing has happened, and I mean nothing. I actively yearn for more information to chew on in regards to Solomon, the Alpha, and every other character in the damn book, but it honestly feels like Valiant is holding a carrot in front of me and refusing to let me eat it. I mean, what the hell happened inbetween issues 4 and 7? What were Jay's powers? Who was the random girl they were with? It's just lazy tbh. So much more could be done with these characters, but instead they're going nowhere (literally, in Gen. Zero's case).
I'm gonna be pumped for HW2 no matter what, but I find it hard to believe that Renegade is creating hype or gaining new fans at all.

Everything feels so disconnected no matter how often I read it. I just keep asking myself how they could do it the way they did - story telling, overall concept, and release strategy...TheFerg714 wrote:I gave it a 'C.' They're stalling us, however, it's not an excuse for lazy writing - (almost) completely ignoring Jay for 3 issues after issue #4's cliffhanger and the following hiatus is a no go, for instance - and the below average art!

Re: Harbinger Renegade
Personally, I kind of love the weird pacing and time-skips. If I wasn't a Valiant fan, I probably wouldn't even bother with this series, but I find it to be kind of awkward and interesting. I mean think about it...Sunlight on Snow wrote:Everything feels so disconnected no matter how often I read it. 1-4: A relatively short span of time in which the overall plot and baddie is introduced (teased) and the main characters come back together.
5: Unknown amount of time skip, starring only guest characters killing eachother, obviously leading up to HW2.
6: Flashback to learn about a mysterious brand new character, and barely see him for a few pages.
7-8: Fallout of 5, with the Renegades.
I think it's really unique and weird and I kind of love it. However, the release strategy is just stupid. Maybe they spent too much money on X-O, Bloodshot Salvation, and Shadowman, because there needs to be more Harbinger story leading up to HW2 (and just on the shelves in general). Period.
Oh god, I had forgotten about the art+1

Honestly, I think Robertson's style, along with Diego Rodriguez's beautiful coloring fit the style and tone that Roberts is going for perfectly. It's just that a good portion of the art feels super lazy and rushed. I would love to see Ryp take over for good.
