Actually i'ld say the art on most of the first year of Protectors is outstanding as was the art on the Ferrett and Arrow one-shots. A very nice realistic, yet distinct style of art. The art on the Ferret and Man of War ongoing series start out shakey (Man of War's art gets BAD). You could kind of tell getting them out was more important than how they looked. But I just a got a Genesis x-over issue of each title that looked quite nice.Knightt wrote:Out of all the Malibu comics that I have collected so far... The Protectors are at the TOP of my list to start reading once I get them all. The COVER art is what struck me, so I (naturally) thouht that the cover artist would be the interior artist as well. SADLY mistaken but the interior artist does not do a bad job at all so I really didnt mind.cornflakeboy wrote:Are they really worth reading?? I mean, if they're 50c, there must be a reason... o i might be wrong...
The covers artist's name is S. Clarke Hawbaker and he is GREAT. I asked Tom Mason about him and was wondering why he was never an interior artist. Tom explained it to me that Clarke was 'terribly slow' and that is why he was only used for the covers. In fact, Clarke used to work for Marvel until they found out how slow he was. I can appreciate the INCREBIDLE covers (IMO) but would have LOVED to see a few issues drawn by this talented artist.
But yeah, you're right, the covers did rock

IMO, the art was lacking on every single issue of all the comics (besides from Dinosaurs for Hire which was drawn cartoony, as it was meant to be). I notice proportion problems across the board but things are well hidden and other things make up for it which put things to right in my book. 'Overall' I think that when I sit down and really start to read these books in earnest, I will hardly notice. The art REALLY kept me away for a long, long time. Tom Mason signed an issue of Dinosaurs for Hire and sent it to me, so I figured 'what the heck' I might as well start picking these books up as well (being an avid Ultraverse and Bravura fan how could I resist).
The INKER on the Ferret and Arrow are the only saving graces there (Dedato on both). Taking sub-standard art and actually giving it that extra depth because you will notice the same artist on other works, really getting away with poor work. I like both of these issues as well but as I say, Dedato carried the issues very well.
You probably got the Newsstand Editions of the Protector issues that you didnt like. Hawbaker worked exclusivley on the Direct Edition books making those (again IMO) the more sought after issues.
Here is a site that has the 'variant covers' for all Malibu books. A VERY nice site but I have emailed the guy who runs it, offering scans of issues that he is missing and uncovering 2-3 issues that were not on his list (again providing scans).

The Embossed (Direct) edition didn't come polybagged. Only the Newstand edition was bagged.---Stevestone384 wrote:I actually have 2 copies of #5 I am trying to sell. Their's no name on the cover on both editions. How in the world did they expect people to tell what comic it was?Vault-Keeper wrote:The Embossed (Direct) edition didn't come polybagged. I sold my bagged Newstand copy to you. Didn't it have the title printed on the bag? If you ordered the Direct copy, you knew what you were getting, or your LCS guy could tell you what it was. Most collectors I knew pre-ordered out of the monthly catalogs, Advance Comics or Previews.---SteveTodd Luck wrote:Their's no name on the cover on both editions.
