Thanks y’all. It is not very big. But, I do really like this piece…. something about Shadowman being surrounded by the baddies (which I am assuming is a portrayal of the deadside?) And… although she is not on the cover… Shadowman #5 is the first appearance of Shan Fong (new Doctor Mirage).

I am guessing her 1st cover appearance is Shadowman #7?

It is weird how different the uncolored drawing is from the finished comic with color. I am not sure who the colorist was on this comic (does anyone know?). Maybe it was done on a computer with the inversion of line color? But, for me, the coloring with Shadowman and the other creatures all being black in color with the green mist swirling around really works. It makes the red eyes “pop” bringing a different “surrounded by a demon-ish dimension” to the cover.

If I were to have colored this drawing… I would not have chosen those dark colors (I would have picked lighter separate colors for each creature) and it would look way more cartoonish and not nearly as nice. That just goes to show how important the colorist is with these comics. Something I am beginning to appreciate a little more.

Virtually all comic book colouring is done digitally these days - and yeah, whoever did colours on that cover would have selected the pixels of line-work of all those creatures and filled it with a different colour to achieve that effect.

As an artist myself, I’ve always appreciated the work that goes into colouring - it is a very important element of the overall look, and an artistic skill that generally doesn’t get the credit it deserves among comic fans.

I guess that has its origins in the fact that colourists never even got listed in the credits if you go back as far as the 1960’s in comics history… perhaps the 4-colour process of that era was just looked at as a simple production task rather than an artistic skill. In the advent of modern digital colouring, it has certainly allowed for even more artistry to complement the rest of the creative team’s work.
