It made $255 million worldwide (less than $90 in the U.S.) and about $30-40 million in VHS-DVD sales.

$175 million? What the hell were they thinking?
I've been wondering. When newspaper articles say how much a movie makes, do they refer to total ticket sales or just the profit back to the studio? Are your numbers above showing a profit for the studio or a loss?

Although I liked both of them.
Heh, so do I, but they are basically the same movie.
:atomic: Comics are like a Rorschach test, everyone has a different opinion on what they are and can be... :atomic:

I have seen Water World a few times but have only seen The Postman 1 time. Maybe I will rent it this week.

I think you have to make well over the production costs before the studio sees a profit. There are a lot of people getting their cuts in between. Waterworld probably lost a lot of money for some people.

Box office sales are usually reported... which is the total of "ticket costs".
The theaters usually get 1/2 and the studio gets 1/2. (On average.)

So, if a movie costs $90Million to make, they spend $30Million on Advertising,
and they have $200Million in Box Office Receipts/Revenue...
then they only made back $100Million of their $120Million investment.
(Their $200Million "smash hit" actually lost $20Million.)

That is... until the DVD sales kick in.
