I advise all to pick up this book, best $1 you will spend this year, and you will thank me later. I ordered A LOT because I love charging $10 for a book I paid 50 cents for 3 months later.

Since you recommend it Ed I will have to pick up a few books.

And my special NYCC announcement pick...

Now in honor of the return of my daughter's favorite Batgirl to the new 52 ( though we know she won't be this time) I am adding 1 book early to my weekly picks...Detective comics 647...as low as $4. dollars on Ebay and they don't even know it is Stephanie Brown's first app. A steal when fans find out, as she has a large following who is very excited about her return.

This is sort of vindicating, considering how I've always been into the character. I've been looking for a CGC 9.8 to pop up - I found one but the guy who has it won't sell and I was able to uncover that he dropped $150 on his 9.8 though. This one in Nmt just sold raw on the bay - I was sniped out at the last second.

Captain America # 217 - January 1978 - Near Mint (9.4)
Final Sale Price - $63.75 + $4.50 Shipping

Not to my knowledge, but Bronze age first appearances are hot right now, and cosmics top that list it seems.

My wife has pre-ordered the first three issues (so far) of this one. She is pretty interested in Letter 44.

Interesting - I hadn't noticed that. Too bad it's not a Mark Jewelers - I think there would be notes on the label if it was. Either way, it's a fly book that seems to be a hard one to find in high grade. Even the unslabbed copies are selling on ebay right now. Check 'em out. On that note, there's also one guy trying to sell a Marks Jewelers at what he's saying is a VG+ for $125. -shrugs-

Mark Jeweler's issues are variants of books from before variants mattered as a marketing ploy. They are typically not found in good shape because these editions of comics were sold widely on military bases and were the normal issue of a comic, but had waxy insert pages bound into the book (think of your movie novels from the 80's that had newsprint pages, but then a few pages in the middle that had waxy pictures from the movie) that were designed to help soldiers order jewelry for their significant other via mail order. The company was "Mark Jeweler's" and as I understand it, they were doing inserts from the Bronze era of books through the Copper era, circa..... ehhhh..... maybe 91?

Because of where they were sold, they tend to have not been cared for by collector's and are tough finds in high grade, and it's pretty hard to put a set together for any given title of a book. Personally, I buy them mostly in Iron Man books, and I do it pretty passively as a subset to my collection. I think that we had a big discussion about these here on the forums at some point in the last so many years where I posted a pretty cool link to an online resource I found about them....

Well... I mean... I suppose you could weigh against a copy known to not have the inserts, OR maybe sort of look down the leaf side of the book to see if you could see the embedded inserts in there! What might you have that you don't want to leaf through it? :) Or are you just talking about looking through your stuff in bulk?

I'm talking about thumbing through back issue boxes.

Nah. Probably no way to fing them by thumbing through them. I've found some in my collection not realizing it when I bought them, but only after looking through the books.

Those books are the worst! I see that LEOG #8 all the time in back issues, thinking I should crack it open....once I felt obligated to buy a book after being unable to put it back in the back (no board, tape sticking out), while trying to figure out if it was a first print! LOL. Turns out it was!

And this is why there are so many Mark Jeweler's months of issues that are unidentified. They sort of pop up - I've been trying to put together a valid checklist of Iron Man vol. 1 books that identifies which issues had the inserts - arguably every issue from 1970 whatever to 1993ish had an insert, but I've yet to see one for each issue of the volume to actually know. These books really shouldn't be marked up though, unless they are super high grade. It's supply and demand, not supply only. There's not much demand for Mark Jeweler's variants on the widespread market. Most seller's try to crank up the price significantly, but the books sit in listings forever when they do. Is a price increase warranted? Yeah I think so. Is it warranted by magnitudes above guide as if it was a high grade CGC? No, absolutely not.

I can't believe I spent all week looking at that listing and forgot it ended tonight. I have no idea when that book will become available again in that grade. I've got two copies, one of which might have a shot, but I'm really thinking it's more like a 9.4.

What the hell? Why is that series hot? Is it due to the upcoming film?

Makes me wish I collected the entire series, but, aside from an issue or two, I wasn't too into it. I preferred the Nova solo series.

Also, I thought it was lame how they brought Jack Flag in to the team.
