My favorite Deathmate moments are probably the prologue and epilogue. To me, those two chapters have the strongest story and art of the whole event. The pairing of Jim Lee inking BWS is unusual but very cool to see. In some panels/pages, it looks like BWS trying to do Jim Lee's style, and in others it looks like Jim Lee trying to do BWS's style! Rob Liefeld's art is either completely off or completely on and his work on the 2nd half of the prologue is an example of his really good stuff (actually, he did some great work on Red as well), and having Bob Layton's inks on top of that just makes it nice and slick.

As for the epilogue, I don't know if it's due to the coloring (Valiant always had brilliant coloring and effects in their books) but some of the panels/pages in the epilogue section that's pencilled by Joe Quesada look like animation cels to me.

As for the story, kind of like in Chaos Effect Alpha and Omega, the heart of the Deathmate story takes place in the prologue and epilogue, most of what the other books do is just show us the consequences of these 2 universes coming together. I found it very interesting that the who premise of the story begins with a quick moment (almost a throw away moment) that takes less than a page to show in Rai #0.

I agree about the Prologue and Epilogue. The middle issues (Red especially) just seem to go on and on without adding anything to the story.

Many people have said that the Black issue was good, but I hated the fact that the only "good" thing about Deathmate was getting the Valiant characters with flashier art-I thought they "Image-y" version of X-O sucked.

Agreed, while i enjoyed image art, i think valiant had a more.... real (?) look to it.

It was really strange to me that X-O was so bland, since visually he was probably the most exciting character Valiant had. Made me think that the Image artist only cared about their own creations.

Other things added to that feeling. Red had a great Bloodshot cover, but he was barely in the book.

Sting (as was mentioned) was killed instantly.

There were others too, but it's been a long time (and lots of therapy bills)
