That can only be answered by those with access to Valiant's original licensing contract.drmirage wrote:If VEI doest not have any rights to licensing, how was VEI able to reprint the A&A hardcover. Those had Unity issues that included Gold Key characters.

Does VEI own the Defiant and Broadway characters as well? I loved Warriors of Plasm but not sure how it would work in the Valiant universe.jmatt wrote:No, but it's very possible they recognize the same strengths these elements brought to the table the first time around and try to fill them with something similar but different.MoonChild wrote:I would never expect VEI to create some new generic mock-ups of these characters.
I've been toying with the idea of a 4001 AD world that looks more like ... dare I say it ... Warriors of Plasm than the North Am of Magnus. A future where tree-hugging cloddies rely on genetically engineered servants rather than robots.
There's potential there. Similar but different. Possible themes: the balance between the needs of man and nature; free will as an expression of mind over the dictates of genetics; gaia and the role of man as the planet's defender against outside forces.

No they don't and really I think they should stay out of Valiant all together. I rather see those properties on their own as a Shooterverse since they are practically 100% Shooter productsThe Dirt Gang wrote:Does VEI own the Defiant and Broadway characters as well? I disagree. I think that "Fatale", "Powers That Be / Starseed", and Knights on Broadway could be easily and beneficially incorporated into the new VEI universe in ways that could really enhance tightness of a shared universe and continuity. Not so sure about Shadow State though.BruceReville wrote:No they don't and really I think they should stay out of Valiant all together. I never read those so I cant speak on them but I do know for sure VEI's got their hands full with what they already own. I couldn't see Defiant or Broadway ever being on their mind to incorporate. It really has nothing to do with them anyhow. Gold Key I could see something happening in the future because of their history together & the fans would love it. Dollars n sense.

I don't see VEI being interested in the Defiant or Broadway material without Jim being involved. Also, the way things went down with him earlier, I don't expect them to start working together again anytime soon.

And a world of fantastic genetic mutant monsters in the wild could be a platform for some kind of hunter, if ya know what I'm sayin'.

Re: NVU without Magnus and Solar
Reading this topic, I guess no one heard. Dark Horse no longer holds the rights to the gold key characters. This went out in May of last year.
"In this context, Janet Jackson (not the singer) creative collaborator and partner of Jim Shooter for decades, posted;
Unfortunately, Dark Horse has cancelled the books. They are doing a few more, I think to finish out enough issue to do trade PB, but because of the high price of the license from Classic Media, dropping sales figures as well as increasing interference from Classic Media into the content of the comics, Dark Horse decided to drop the books. They still like Jim and want to work with him on some things. He’s still very disappointed. But Classic Media is asking too much for too little and they’ve caused problems as well.
I’m so sorry to have to tell you. Or to even have to say it. It’s very disappointing. I was really loving the stories."
I saw this message on a few websites when I noticed the books were no longer coming outlast year.
So as much as we would like to see the characters back with VE, I don't think it would be worth it if they would have to put up with the crap from Classic Media.

Re: NVU without Magnus and Solar
The problem is, with all of the silence from Dark Horse as to what went wrong with the titles, there are many different versions of the story out there. I've heard this one, but I've also heard others say that the Gold Key line was returning, but Jim Shooter wouldn't be working on it. I don't think I've heard much on official word of if anyone is holding on to the properties or not. I believe Dark Horse still holds them, but I don't know if there is a way to definitely find out. I think the real reason was the lackluster response to the book and the horrible lateness of some of the titles.Sensationalcomics wrote:Reading this topic, I guess no one heard. Re: NVU without Magnus and Solar
Etos is right on with this. We've heard a few different stories including this one. Dark Horse didn't promote this line as well as they could have and the lateness totally destroyed any chance of it succeeding. If they had come out on time every month I believe things could have picked up. Someone should call random house and ask..

I can even remember some kind of comicon promo that showed a Dark Horse booth with a big SOLAR 8 cover after this story was released, right?

Random House does not own the rights to Magnus, Turok, or Solar. They are owned by Classic Media, check out their website at http://www.classicmedia.tv/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Classic and Random House were partners at one time, but as of 2009 they are no longer. Given the licenses the company holds, I could see where they could of had issues with Shooters stories & style.

Looking at most of their lineup, I see what you're getting at. I wonder if that's what JJ was referring to asSensationalcomics wrote:Random House does not own the rights to Magnus, Turok, or Solar. Ya. I haven't read them but I've heard it said that the DK incarnations were a lot "grimmer" than readers were expecting. I could see Classic Media being queasy about that.Daniel Jackson wrote:Looking at most of their lineup, I see what you're getting at. If they did have a problem with the way Shooter handled them, then I don't think they'd care for a Valiant treatment either.

Re: NVU without Magnus and Solar
I have always LOVED Magnus and I desperately want him in the NVU!
That being said, I would like to see Valiant make it on the strength of it's own characters the first year. Once they get a good foothold among the fans, THEN spend a lil money leasing the characters from Classic Media.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, if they ever DO bring back the Gold Key characters - do it with NO hype (at first). Make it a HUGE surprise reveal and blow us away! (I doubt this could happen because with the internet, the news will spread like wildfire anyway!).
