Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
It used to make more sense, when you could see the full identity of the bidders. If you were selling a $10,000+ item and the bidders were visible, it's basically telling everyone who has $10,000+ to spend.Nairbe wrote:I haven't been on eBay for long (2-3 years), but I have never seen that before. I didn't even know it was possible.greg wrote:That's weird... I didn't even notice that. I was outbid several hundred dollars ago anyway.FormerReader wrote:Private bidding? No thanks.
Many of those collectors like their privacy, so it was a disincentive to bid at Ebay for high dollar items when sites like Heritage or Comiclink would keep bidder identity secret.
For years, Ebay had the "private bidding" option for legitimate concerns about bidder privacy, but it is also a way for sellers to bid up their own items with fake accounts.
Since Ebay has put the "mask" on bidder identities, there doesn't seem to be much legitimate reason to use "private bidding" anymore... unless you want to bid up your own items with fake accounts.
This seller has excellent feedback, though, so I doubt if anything nefarious is going on... but it's a weird thing to see, regardless.
Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
Yes, in the old days you could actually message an eBay bidder and maybe badmouth the seller or the item.

Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
As Greg has said the seller has very good feedback so there is no reason to suggest anything nefarious is going on, but when you're talking this much money I want things to be as transparent as they can.
I am still looking forward to seeing what this goes for.

Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
Oh, man. I remember those days well. I received some of the oddest messages. I collected a line of vintage dishes, and there was another collector that competed with me on these things, and she would go around to all the people I bought from and tell them what a horrible person I was, and that I was ripping them off, etc. Then, the sellers were *SQUEE* at me as they thought I got items for much cheaper than I should have (which was true in many cases, but they were auctions after all).StarBrand wrote:Yes, in the old days you could actually message an eBay bidder and maybe badmouth the seller or the item.

The private bidder might be international. Some countries have stricter privacy laws.

I can see my own bid, but all the others are private. I assume I'm also "private" if you can't can't see any of the bidder IDs/masks... so the auction is set to "private bids".nycjadie wrote:The private bidder might be international. Some countries have stricter privacy laws.

Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
$2026, a bit higher than I thought it would go. I estimated $1800-1900. My snipe bid wasn't even a contender;)
Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
Probably a good long-term investment even at that price,

I thought around $1500, guess I was sure wrong. Have a Magnus #1 in CGC 9.0 or above sold lately?

Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
That's the first time a CGC 9.2 Dr. Solar #1 passed $1,000 so that's very impressive that it also passed $2,000.
It has been more than 4 years since a CGC 9.0 (or higher) Magnus #1 has been for sale, according to GPAnalysis.
Those two in high grade just don't come up for sale very often.

Greg, I could be wrong, but didn't (I may have the name wrong) Gatsby on the CGC Boards pick-up a Dr. Solar CGC 9.4 in the last couple of years? I though it was for less the $2000.

If he did, it's not recorded on GPanalysis. The last CGC 9.4 Dr. Solar #1 was in August 2015 for $4,063.FormerReader wrote:Greg, I could be wrong, but didn't (I may have the name wrong) Gatsby on the CGC Boards pick-up a Dr. Solar CGC 9.4 in the last couple of years? There are sales of CGC 9.4 Dr. Solar #1 under $2,000 in 2009 and 2013. The highest price paid (according to GPAnalysis) for a CGC 9.2 was $910 in 2011, before the $2,026 last night.
Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
A CGC 7.5 sold for $545. It sold about ten minutes after the 9.2 ended.

Re: Doctor Solar 1 slabs
There are a few books which have "settled" into a standard price for the mid grades.
One example is Hulk #181. Pretty much every grade from 3.0 to 7.0 is about $200 times the grade ($600 for a 3.0, $1,400 for a 7.0).
If something similar is starting to happen for books like Doctor Solar #1, then maybe we will see 3.0 to 7.0 grades at around $50 times grade.
If so, 6.5 would be about $325... and this one was $315.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "mid-grade standard price" becomes a thing that makes price guides more useful.

Since that discussion six months ago, my example of Hulk #181 has already changed.TheeBaldMoose wrote:Just saw this and thought of this thread....greg wrote:There are a few books which have "settled" into a standard price for the mid grades.

At the time, Hulk #181 CGC 3.0 to 7.0 was $200 times the grade. Now it's between $250 and $300.

Looking at current offerings of this book on eBay, it doesn’t really seem to
have moved in price since this thread was started 2.5 years ago.

A Doctor Solar 1 in CGC 8.0 closed a couple days ago at $478 on eBay.
