David Banks http://www.dpbanks.com the liason for Capitol Bindery is now starting a venture to bind softcover books, including full wrap around covers you can design.

He is testing 100 books including the Archer and Armstrong one that caught my eye.

I find the idea of softcovers more interesting to match some books where they were started in tpb then stopped, or certain runs were bound.

Oh great :!:

Now what do I choose.. hard cover or paperback!!

Do you think the paperback will be less expensive to produce? Im thinking it might feel better in my hands when I read it.

Any thoughts?

As with all choices, it depends.

I like the heft of a thick hardcover, but if the price of the softcovers is economical enough they would get a few of my books, especially since I like being able to design a universal trade dress for long runs.

David has not yet released any pricing for softcover editions through singleboundstudios. Though it will be hard pressed to beat the 15/book price Library binding currently offers.

So once the prices come out then I can start figuring out what works best for each.

WOW! Noob here and I'm trying to pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing these pics of a hardbound Valiant collection! I WANT!!

I had never heard about the possibility of doing this. And on first thought I cringed at the idea of chopping up the comics I love, but after seeing them sitting on a bookshelf I could picture them on my bookshelf and see how easy and nice it would be to just pick up and start reading. No opening and closing multiple bags from inside the comic box. And those dustjackets! Man if I ever get any books like this made can I just buy copies of those dustjackets?! 8-)

Now my only problem is having to actually get any of the comic I would need to actually make any books like that. Given time, it will happen though and I hope to be able to do this myself someday. Really beautiful guys. You ROCK! Big time. :thumb: :headbang:

These look cool. That's a great way to have a reading copy, so that you can keep your "pristine" copies safe and secure. :)

SO anyone figure out how many hardcovers it would take to do the Valiant Universe?

There are 690 regular issues - so may 28 to 30 books or so?

I am roughly figuring on around 45 books. This includes all of the VH-1 and VH-2 comics.

Right now I have 25 books bound, covering 517 issues. My estimates for future books are:

HARD Corps (2 books)
Solar (3 books)
Magnus (4 books)
Ninjak (2 books)
X-O Manowar (4 books)
Geomancer/Psi-Lords (1 book)
Trinity Angels (1 book)
Doctor Tomorrow (1 book)
Deathmate/Miscellaneous VH-1 (1 book)
Miscellaneous VH-2 (1 book)
Gold Key Reprints (1 book)

for 21 more books, or 46 total.

Archer and Armstrong

Ok, so there are 26 issues.. but..

what is suggested for the following problems:

#8 Upside down EW cover.. should I cut it off and set it in just after the A&A cover?

#25 Do I add the EW issue in between A&A issue25 and 26?

#26 Do I really need to keep the EW half of the book or can I cut it out?

Should I add Chaos Effect Omega at the end of this run? It showed the last moments of A&A??

Questions, questions, questions... I just want to do it right ;)

If I did it this way I would be adding 2.5 books..? Would that mean that Id need to have this run bound into 2 big books?

The cover to A&A/EW #8 is not an upside cover. It's a wraparound cover. I simply pulled the staples out of the book, took the cover off and folded it back on itself. This way the cover opens into the complete image.
#25 Do I add the EW issue in between A&A issue25 and 26?
Yes, because it's the second part of the "What I did to infuriate the Sect" storyline that starts in A&A #25.
#26 Do I really need to keep the EW half of the book or can I cut it out?
I kept it in because A&A/EW #26 is basically a two-part story in a flip book. I used a paper cutter after I removed the staples to cut the book in half. I flipped the A&A part so everything was laid out in the proper order. One Chaos Effect ad was upside down, but it's an ad. I didn't care.
Should I add Chaos Effect Omega at the end of this run? It showed the last moments of A&A??
I didn't in this case. But I had already had Chaos Effect bound with all of the chapters and epilogues in one volume, so it didn't seem a big deal to me. If you're not planning on putting together a complete Chaos Effect, you probably should consider it.

If I did it this way I would be adding 2.5 books..? Would that mean that Id need to have this run bound into 2 big books?

Nope, I bound the whole thing in one huge, honking volume -- 1032 pages. That's probably the limits on what I would bind in a single volume, but I didn't really want to break it into two 500+ page books. A quick map would say A&A 0-13 (520 pages) and A&A 14-26 (512 pages) with the added Eternal Warrior material you asked about earlier. Adding Chaos Effect Omega to the second book would make it 548 pages. I guess either way would be okay. Like I said, I like my single volume and would probably repeat the process if I were to do it again.

And that is why I only send out six books at a time. And about once a month. $133 (six books and shipping) is a lot easier for the boss-lady to accept.

Steve,
I am starting to Map Quantum and Woody. I am curious how you did yours.
Basically where did you put Quantum and Woody 32 and the GOAT 1-Shot?

thanks

Neil,

I just put them all in numerical order. I started with Q&W 0 (which was autographed by Priest and Mark Bright), then just kept going from 1-21, then jumped to 32. Even though they were published out of order, Priest supposedly structured the story so that 32 would been in the correct sequence.

For THE GOAT one-shot, I actually held that book out and will be including it in my Acclaim Miscellany volume.

Don't forget the EW issue where The Goat eats the fold map! :)

Also, the Goat special fits into Q&W continuity. I believe that there's both a panel from the Special in the appropriate issue, as well as a "credit" to Bright at the beginning of the Goat book, for working the 2 stories together so well.

So I was looking at my Psi Lords... and wondering...

Would it be REALLY stupid to put one of my PsiLord golds in with this bunch to be bound?

Would it be like Im throwing it away?

I guess the bigger question is: If a person is going to bind a set of books, should variants be added at any time?

I know this is all about opinion and what the books value is to you.. just wondering about your opinions :thumb:

As with all things of this sort, it's yours so do what you will...

But my vote would be "no", and here's why...

The binding process seems to pretty much put all the collected into one place for the strict purpose of reading together. I'm sure, when collected in a nice neat package like this that it will create it's own level of collectability, but I don't think the value of that collectability is going to increase or decreas on weather there is a "Gold" book included or not. It might have some novelty value, I'm sure, but overall I would think that the Gold book would have more value on it's own then bound with a collection (especially given the ready availability of the the regular #1)

But thats just my limited opinion and do what you will!

I gotta admit I really like these bound books, but my problem is that I don't know what DNV is going to reprint in HC or TPB form and what ever they do, I'd rather have theirs than mine.

In My Opinion you don't need golds but say if you had a damaged one than why not, just for the overall look of the book you assemble.
