VH2 feedback?

Post by iggy101us »

I recently got back into comics (Valiant in particular) with the release of the Harbinger HC. I am re-reading some of my old Valiants and getting back issues to fill in the gaps in my collection. I have been focusing on VH1 only.

My question is . . . what are the VH2 titles like? Some of the prices like Shadowman Vol 3 seem extremely high. Is that just due to small print runs or are the stories really that good?

prices are indicitative of print run and availability. Some of the storys are quite good, some are awful, just keep in mind that these aren't your early VH1 characters anymore and you won't have a problem...happy hunting :thumb:

Oh.... here we go. :P

Here is my :twocents:

1st and most important...... these are not the VH1 characters. Totally different.

But, I have liked what I have read. Read with an open mind (realizing that they are not the same characters) and I think you will like some/most of VH2.

The art is good also, different than VH1 for sure, but still good.

If you can start with Solar.

(I have just gotten into collecting VH2 & VH3, so I might be a bit biased.)

As for the high prices, I think (others can tell you better) it is due to low print run and the fact that many of these books were tossed or runied in back issue bins cause no one was ordering/buying them when they first came out.

Quantum and Woody is solid book with a sense of humor behind it.

Turok was pretty lame in the beginning, but got better with the one shot books (with the exception of Evolution).

Trinity Angels was terrible.

Troublemakers would be OK if you read stuff like The New Mutants.

Shadowman was too dark and made little sense until issue #16, then the title took off and remained a solid read until the end of it's VH3 run.

Dr. Tomorrow was a good series and I liked it's concep.t

X-O did not appeal to me much, but it was readable for the most part.

Magnus didn't click with me either, but like X-O it was readable.

Operation Stormbreaker was excellent and I wish they made more books along the same line.

Eternal Warriors had an interesting premise and I liked what Acclaim did with the books other than Gilad's character.

N.I.O. is just plain awful.

Ninjak...well they pretty much ruined Ninjak.

Solar was very well done although I prefer the VH1 version.

Harbinger has slick art, but not much else going for it.

As far as prices go you can pick up the majority of them pretty cheap. There are certain variants and super low print run books that go for a fairly high amount though. If you're just looking for reading material it shouldn't be difficult or very expensive to pick up most of the books. VH3 Shadowman will probably give you the most trouble.

Thanks for the detailed write-up! I really appreciate it. I will give some of the titles a try.

Loved Bright's artwork on this series, and I agree, it was a solid book. :thumb:

Overall, it was a good line, with some great books.

VH-2 Bloodshot was a phenomenal run, which needs to be mentioned. Eternal Warriors, Master Darque, Turok and Solar were all intricate, detailed titles with tight, interwoven continuity. Shadowman was great starting with the publication of #16, agreed.

Quantum and Woody was literary in its pendulum swings from laugh-out-loud-funny to oh-no-they-DIN'T sorrow.

Plus, they had a costume-wearing Goat that was the greatest comics character of the 1990s.

Oops, I didn't mean to leave Bloodshot out. I think I liked the series almost as much as the VH1 version to tell you the truth.

Jim Shooter didn't think much of Quantum & Woody.
VH3 Shadowman had the best art in all 3 volumes.

Yea, Acclaim was tight IMO. Bloodshot, Shadowman, Q&W, good art good stories, I would hope that they fuse the 2 universes to a point. They both had qualities that I like in them.

For the most part Acclaim had top notch art. Personally, I really enjoyed Broome on Shadowman in particular though.

Q&W and Magnus had some real good art. But I meant VH3 Shadowman compared to all 3 Shadowman volumes. :P

When Axel Gimenez took over, the art in Magnus went down the toilet.

Valiant Characthers Plus Acclaim Art and Winning Combination

Post by Torque »

Image
Torque

There's something about the Acclaim Art rendition of the Valiant Characters that I really enjoyed. If they just wouldn't have messed up the original Universe's Story Line even more, I think they would have had a killer combination.

I hope the new owners of Valiant will think hard about adopting some of art stylization from Acclaim. You might get the Thousand or so Board members to buy a regular Valiant Comic Series using the original art stylizations, because of their History and Love of the Universe, but to survive you'll need to bring in a lot of new Enthusiasts into this Universe using up to date art. The old Valiant art work as much as I and a lot of other love it, won't hold up today in attracting the numbers to succeed as a monthly comic producer.

Yeah, I think it would definitely be in their best interest to incorporate the best elements from both VH1 and Acclaim.

McKone is good. I saw that he was working with Abnett & Lanning on something for, I think, DC. I want to say it was Batman/Superman, but I could be wrong. Either way, it had a nice cover.
