What is Valiant????
I went into a different LCS this week to check out what they had. As I was leaving I asked the guy if they had any Valiant. He looked at me and said "What is Valiant?" and "Who publishes it?" I was dumbfounded. How do you own a comic shop and not know about Valiant? What is the world coming to?

That way when I find Unity Red or a Harby #1 in their store they have no idea what it's really worth.

Fully.
But that will have to change when VEI starts doing new books.

What we have here...is a failure to communicate! The store owners these days are typically fools, in my experience, limited to "knowledge" of things post 2005. I was at a store a while back and had a person ask me what I was talking about with "I didn't collect DC for a while until Death of Superman" and the guy literally had NO CLUE Supes had died. This, despite the fact that there was a copy of the collect DOS on his shelf. He couldn't have been THAT old but man, one would think, y'know? Owners and workers are too often into a very narrow interest to the detriment of customers new, old and current. My area is lucky to have 2 of the 3 stores-in fact, to have 3 stores, period is lucky-be staffed by people who respect what came before the current era. It is when I travel, such as to DC, NYC or Chicago, that I run into problems. It makes me want to punch a wall. I think there should be an industry-wide rule that any shop staffed by people who EVER answer a question about something from the past with a response that indicates total ignorance of anything pre-2005, ought to have to hand over the most valuable book on the premises. I believe THAT would make EVERY shop have more learned staff. Of course, I'm dreaming and bitter. When it comes to VALIANT, the sad fact is that it got so ragged on by Wizard and others, the middle-books were so vastly overprinted, that there is a builtup resistance to taking it seriously. Besides that, far too many are still ignorant of the fact that Dino, Walt and the rest of the Good Guys won the case. Maybe DIAMOND-the Standard Oil of comics-will help by finally soliciting the HC's...and, in the future...ongoing titles.

That would be nice to find a rare valiant in one of those stores. The only place around me that has them sells them for cover price (they gave me a unity 0 because it said free), but I've been though them all. I really do hope the new Valiants catch on.

I guess I'm lucky. My LCS at least knew about Valiant when I mentioned how it was coming back hopefully now that their legal troubles were past. He seemed incredulous that it was possible, but at least he knew what I was talking about.
Unfortunately, I only have one choice for a LCS now, and it's not even very local really. I work about half an hour away from home and the two comic shops that were in the city I work in have both closed in the last few months. So now I have to drive 30 minutes further away from work to get to the nearest shop.

Orlando has really the only worthwhile cons held in south florida . . .depluto wrote:I lived in Winter Haven for a couple of years a while back. There used to be a pretty good shop downtown, but I suppose it's gone now.
At least it's not far from there to the occasional con in Tampa or Orlando.
Although I did meet Bob Layton in a weird hotel on the beach con in North Miami Beach . . .

Sounds kinda like a Tarrintino movie.

Yes, the shop in downtown Winter Haven closed a few months ago and the not so good store on the east side of Winter Haven just closed officially today.depluto wrote:I lived in Winter Haven for a couple of years a while back. There used to be a pretty good shop downtown, but I suppose it's gone now.

I'll have to see about the cons if I have the money to go when they happen. I've heard something about one in Orlando in March (I think it was March).

Nope, I go to Fantasy Factory. CoC is farther north and therefore further away for me. The shop that was in downtown Winter Haven was an offshoot of CoC and I heard that their rent just got too expensive to continue. So they folded it back into the Lakeland store.JustCallMeAric wrote:Which store do you go to, Coliseum of Comics?Phoenix8008 wrote:South down HWY 27 from Winter Haven and Lake Wales. I went to a very small comic/card show last fall and when I asked some of the dealers if they had any Valiant, they all looked at me like I was crazy. A couple actually had some that didn't even know they did, so I got most of the issues for .50 cents apiece.Daniel Jackson wrote:That's only one of the many reactions you'll get when you ask for Valiant at some LCS's. Yep, I'm looking forward to tomorrow when I get to go to my LCS and do an intensive search of their quarter bins looking for Valiants. I was there 2 weeks ago and got 50 or so comics for 25 cents each, and that was a rushed look through about a third of their 15 or so longboxes full of comics for a quarter! This time, I'll have no kids that need to go pee or want me to buy them stuff too. Just me, my newly cashed paycheck, and lotsa longboxes to plunder!!Lightning Strike wrote:I went to a very small comic/card show last fall and when I asked some of the dealers if they had any Valiant, they all looked at me like I was crazy. Ugh! That's the worst thing to do when you're planning on rummaging through boxes of comics at an LCS. Don't ever bring young kids with you.Phoenix8008 wrote:Yep, I'm looking forward to tomorrow when I get to go to my LCS and do an intensive search of their quarter bins looking for Valiants. Trust me, I know. Had to that time since it was the first time going there to see where they were and all. We were already out shopping with the whole family before going. On the bright side of it being so far away from home though, my excuse now is that I don't wanna waste gas so I HAVE TO just go there right after work and then go home (since I'm already halfway there when I'm at work). So by default, I'll have no kids with me from now on during my bi-weekly trips to the LCS.Lightning Strike wrote:Ugh!
