How many DU's & Defuncts (DFT) can you count ?
A few weeks ago i finally got around to sorting my personal collection in order after wanting to do it for six months, but anything that could stop me did stop me.
This was a seriously frustrating time, especially as i had just joined this fine forum here and that made the desire to sort them ever stronger.
I needed to check against the wonderful lists made in this particular thread.
I had already got my Vh1 & 2 done and up to date as best as i needed, but i had that itch you just cant scratch and it grew over those six months until i almost popped.
So as i finally started to sort it made me realise how scary my collection is in terms of obscure weirdness, otherwise known as DU's and Defunct(DFT) publishers (mainly independent).
Not only that but how scary it could be too once i sorted them and added all the DU's & Defuncts I wanted to sink my teeth into.
Now I was already actively collecting more DU's then most average comic book fans even know existed.
However i know full well im not blind crazy all alone right, so i was at peace with my inner desire to push the boundaries of Du collecting to its limits and beyond
As i was updating my wants list i knew I was now part of something really outstanding here and that made my reasearch that whole much easier.
You swell guys who came way before me had already done a good chunk of the work, all i had to do was read it up and make lists.
This is what i did and it was fun & informative but mostly its was rather alarming.
It scared me because my original belief was that were probably a good ten Du's and Defuncts i already had begun to complete, but was also aware i would be adding possibly another five or so.
How wrong was I ? I knew full well there more but had just plain shut it out.
So after scouring the DU threads i added each DU/DFT to an excel spreadsheet as i went.
Now after it hit fifteen i knew i was in trouble, as i had accounted for what i already started to collect and some of the ones i knew i wanted to add werent there yet.
After twenty it was just plain silly.
So when i finished on what i got as twenty nine (now 60 and subject to change ), i knew my future of collecting DU's & DFT's was going to be the single most challenging thing i had ever attempted in my 30 year comic collecting years.
I must say though i was probably more excited than i had been in a long time.
Lets face it this might not ever get finished right
I could be here for another fifty years and someone will still likely pop up and say "have you got the such and such version that was only distributed at the blah blah Con of '94 on your list"?.
Which is exactly the thing that drives me into making the decision to want them all in the first place.
I can likely do this forever and still not finish and i might not ever have to get to that day where i run out of issues to add and feel empty once more
Oh the joy, the joy.
So here i present you all with a list of what i came up with as the definitive DU & DFT A-Z.
Im sure its not really complete, but im asking you to help me make it so.
I want to do the lot.
I will stop at nothing to undertake every DU & DFT you can find.
Join in if you like. Compete against me if you wish, but first and foremost lets make this fun and friendly.
Lets get this information available on a global scale.
Help me help you help me and help Knightt too
Knightt has already said he wants to make this section as complete as is possible.
So here's what to do.
Go through the lists below and add to this thread anything you think i missed.
Give reasoning for adding new names to either list and what goes where.
Please do argue the point on why it is or is not a DU.
Overall help me to compile THE LIST and when its done i can begin.
Thanks in advance you crazy people

Well, if you want a list of all defunct companies, that list could be truly mind-blowingly long. I know I personally wouldn't want to attempt to collect every defunct publisher out there.
So myabe you want to qualify what you're looking for. Are we looking for true "Dead Universes", that being line of books with shared continuity and characters crossing over with each other? Are you looking for only defunct companies that have a long publishing history of putting out many books? If so, then what are the minimum number of titles and/or years?
I'll add a few as time allows, ones that I feel are worth persuing. With all the fly by night self publishers that have come and gone over the years, I think it's important to determine which ones are worth listing and which aren't.

Why is Pacific grouped with First Comics? They were two separate companies. If you want to group something together, a good grouping would be Capital Comics with First Comics. Books like Badger and Nexus were first published by Capital, then were continued at First once Capital went belly up.
I would treat Pacific as a separate company. True, Eclipse did pick up a lot of their titles when they went under, but both companies put out a large number of books by themselves.

Here's just the first few I would add, ones that I think are significant enough to collect:
3-D Zone (a line of 3-D books, they put out quite a few titles)
A Plus Comics
A-List Comics
Aardvark-Vanaheim/Renegade Press/Aardvark One (not just Cerebus, there were several other creator owned books put out by Sim and his wife Deni. When they divorced, Deni took all the books except for Cerebus with her and formed Renegade Press. Aardvark One was the imprint Sim used when he published Puma Blues, AV itself is getting ready to publish a couple books soon, but worthwhile mentioning because of the Renegade Press connection)
Adventure Comics (later acquired by Malibu)
Aircel Publications (also later acquired by Malibu)
Ajax-Farrell Publishing (probably older than what we're looking for)
Amazing Comics (another Malibu acquisition)
ANIA associated publishers (a collective of African American publishers who tried to compete against Milestone in the 90's, several different imprints)
APC (put out quite a few titles, the most interesting one a Mr. T series)
Apple Comics
Arrow Comics
Atlas/Seaboard (might want to add the Seaboard to avoid confusion with the first Atlas Comics)
Awesome Entertainment (Liefeld's company)
...and this is just the letter 'A'!

Also Whisper started as a Capital title then was picked up by First.Books like Badger and Nexus were first published by Capital, then were continued at First once Capital went belly up.
PC and Pacific are the same company - PC (Pacific Comics).
What about Topps Comics??? Only 377 issues.

Cheers dude, Edited the PC Pacific. It was late and my mind was awash with glorious notions of having a bazzilion Du's and defunct companies titles all around meRocket2600 wrote:Also Whisper started as a Capital title then was picked up by First.Books like Badger and Nexus were first published by Capital, then were continued at First once Capital went belly up.

Thank you very much.
I made booboo with pacific and First meaning to put Capital for the reasons you put so cheers for correcting me. Edited
The whole point of this is to really collect DU's.
That being a line of books with shared continuity and characters crossing over with each other as you so succinctly put it.
I appreciate that a lot of small companies have come and gone almost overnight and some were so awful they shouldnt be remembered or ever mentioned, but i kind of like that too in some twisted way So any you want to add ket me know i really will do the lot
Im well up for collecting the defunct companies too, some of who put out quite a lot of product. This could again prove lengthy and (depending on your mental state) serious fun too.
So lets chop this into two lists then.
1. DU's
2. Defunct companies.
Any more for anymore?

Now this i like.
I had quite a few of these on my short list.
With the ones that later became Malibu imprints i will have then under one lot i.e Mailbu/Aircel/Eternity/Adventure etc.
I have some Apple and Arrow.
Atlas/seaboard edited. Rockets site is so cool.
Can you give me any Titles for A-list or A plus.
Also now yo mention 3-D zone i thought about Blackthorne. WOOOO !!!
Now Awesome and Maximum press By our good friend and all round comic book saviour Mr Rob Liefeld kind of clashes with a project Drift and Myself have on the backburner.
I will add them though but cannot collect them myself as of yet ( probably never after what were gonna do)
AV we can leave if they are going to publish more, but maybe renagade can be added to Defunct. I have some weird stuff from them.
Ania i dont have any recollection of so ill google them.
APC became Markosia and are still going so ill leave them. I know the guys who started this lot up which is quite cool.
Also Com.X would have been here but they just announced some new bits.
Ajax i agree a bit too old.
If we stick with 80's onwards. Even though we have included Atlas/ Seaboard
So it begins.

cool, that's the kind of feedback I was looking for, so I'll know a little better what to look for. There might still be a few you'll have to correct me on.Draco wrote:Brother J wrote:Here's just the first few I would add, ones that I think are significant enough to collect:

A Plus I think was mainly reprints, here's their title list:
ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN
ADVENTURES OF DR. GRAVES
ARIK KHAN (1991)
ATOMIC MOUSE
ATTACK OF THE MUTANT MONSTERS
FORBIDDEN WORLDS (1991)
HERBIE (1990)
SIX-GUN HEROES (1991)
A List: This is one I really like. I'm not sure, but I think these were new stories using classic comic titles from the Golden Age. There might be reprints as well (the Eisner book, I'm guessing) Here's their list:
ART OF PULP FICTION
BRIDGMAN'S CONSTRUCTIVE ANATOMY
BRIDGMAN'S HEAD FEATURES & FACES
FLAMINGO
JUMBO COMICS
JUNGLE COMICS (1997)
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
MARCH HARE (1998)
PLANET COMICS (1997)
PULP FICTION
SCREAM COMICS
WILL EISNER'S HEROES OF SPORTS
WINGS COMICS (1997)
As far as Aardvark Vanaheim, at least include the non-Cerebus comics with the Renegade books as I believe all the titles that were carried over were continued with the same numbering.
ANIA is going to be tough, as like I mentioned, they are not one publisher, but a group of publishers. I guess we could leave it off, I just thought they were neat as a counter-point to Milestone.
I'll try to pick up at B later today!

Hey Bro J,
Top stuff here dude. Way to go.
A Plus then seems to be a no go and I have some Brigman Stuff from A list, but cant find any stuff that isnt a reprint a this time, so ill move this to the pending section for now.
Wow this is already got me buzzing.
Im learning new stuff every minute here.
I agree that the continued titles from AV to Renegade should be included.
Maybe when i can get more info on the Ania Publishers i can include them.
I did look some info up, but it was heavy going and there didnt seem to be anything i could really get my teeth into, so also in pending for now.
Keep em coming folks

Cheers for that dude, but the point is to look for publishers who put out a reasonable amount of product and are recognisable too.
To enjoy the whole point of the thread i wanted people to research and propose individual publishers and argue the merit for their inclusion in either section
In light of please dont do the same for each letter of the alphabet
That also said can you delete the last post so people dont get bored scanning down and then ignore the point of what i want from them & the rest of the thread.
Pretty please.

To enjoy the whole point of the thread i wanted people to research and propose individual publishers and argue the merit for their inclusion in either section
In light of please dont do the same for each letter of the alphabet

I just had a look and found Pocket Change to be much later.Chiclo wrote:Are they connected to Pocket Change comics?Rocket2600 wrote:Also Whisper started as a Capital title then was picked up by First.Books like Badger and Nexus were first published by Capital, then were continued at First once Capital went belly up.
PC and Pacific are the same company - PC (Pacific Comics).
What about Topps Comics??? Only 377 issues.

I've seen them with a similar font for the PC in the title box.

I know you were being helpful dude.Vault-Keeper wrote:list of publishers deleted by request
I just thought the list was way crazy long and couldnt identify enough names on it for it to be of any real help to be fair.
Also as i said underneath, i really wanted the individual input and interaction of you guys over a long list of publishers names.
It almost drove me insane scanning it and didnt want others to look at it and be immediately put off by the sheer magnitude of what was there.
The thought however was much appreciated though and it did make me look in places i had not done so before so many thanks dude.

I was already doing that, but thanks for trying to steal my thunder!Vault-Keeper wrote:Go to Mile High's website, and look up all the publishers. They list them all alphabetically.
Got a question as to whether the company is still publishing? Just click on the publisher link, and see what's available.
If the newest comic is one that came out several years ago, I'd say you found something dead.

VK just listed all the A's in one big stream, but you picked out individual ones to see whether they were good to go, which is exactly what i want.
Im just glad people want to make me sicker.
