Okay, so who's up for a poll?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

Nothing from Marvel. Nothing truly "indy", either. Everything I've been reading of late has been DC-Wildstorm or DC-Vertigo. My fave titles are the Fables books and Ex-Machina. So, my fave writers would be Willingham (and Sturges, to a lesser degree) and Vaughn. I love the way Buckingham draws, but Tony Harris is doing AMAZING work with Ex Machina.

The owner of a local shop refuses to read EX, since he "hates" BKV's "politics". I told him he has no idea what he's missing. To me, Ex is nothing short of brilliant and entertaining. In fact, I'd say that BKV is among the top ten or writers I've seen in the HISTORY of this medium. I loved Y and thought that Pride of Baghdad was great. I have yet to read anything by him or Willingham-my picks for the best two regularly active writers-that I have not enjoyed.

Wow - questions I cannot honestly answer. My reading is now up to 2005-06 levels, and I think everyone here already knows House Of M sucked sweaty monkey taters.

I also don't read BKV because of his politics. I stopped reading Ex Machina at number 7.

Add Brian Wood to your list. Same sort of opinions and opinion inclusion in his books. I read books from both writers, but the politics can influence the stories too much at times.

I ignore the politics by looking at it as a story about "this character" rather than the viewpoint. As for Ex...it's become a very intersting look at the consequences of politcal action AND inaction.

I decided long ago that I could have a certain amount of "disconnect" from the comics I read. Comics for me are like mental bubble gum, a quick escape, and short break.

Even books like Sandman and Fables have some "issues" that my morals do not agree with, but I still find immense enjoyment in reading them. Now there is some stuff that is too far past my morals/values/likes that I would not enjoy (a book like Preacher probably falls into this category and many of the myriad of "bad girl" books, [now I do not know for sure, I am just surmising]).

A book like Ex for sure has some aspects that I do not agree with, but I still really enjoyed the first two trades and I am actively looking for the rest of the story.

The "politics" are not as much as a problem for me as the
'moral compass".

Well said. I've read some books recently, that have had unsettling parts-Preacher, FOR SURE, and to a lesser degree, Y and Sandman, come to mind-but otherwise I enjoyed them. I would agree with you about the "bad girl books", based on what I've seen of them. I would also have to say that while I think you should check out the very first issue of Preacher and decide for yourself, I am almost certain that you are correct about what your reaction to the book would be. It's just about the most insane thing I've ever read in this medium.

You know, I have heard Preacher mentioned so many times, but there is so much great stuff to read I am not sure if I'll ever read it. Right now, not really interested. But I have so much great stuff to read.

And it has been too long since I have re-read any Valiant goodness. I might squeeze in A&A #0-12 after I finish the last Alan Moore Supreme TPB.

(I did read the Harby TPB in the last year, but that is it)..... well I do have the X-O in my classroom right now...... and I would like to read the beginning of EW soon.

I don't really see this as a poll as much as a general survey, but I'll play along (answers are not in any order):

What are your favorite Marvel characters?
Real Captain America, Iron Fist, Hawkeye, the Vision.
What are your favorite DC characters?
Real Batman, real the Question, Flash (Jay Garrick), any titan in the Wolfman-Perez era.
What are your favorite Indy characters?
Jack Staff, Savage Dragon, Shadowman (as written by Bob Hall).
Who are your favorite writers?
Dwayne McDuffie, Kurt Busiek (especially for AC), Ron Marz, John Rozum (for Xombi), Geoff Johns (for JSA), Mark Millar, Warren Ellis, Roy Thomas (when doing All-Star Squadron particularly), Marv Wolfman in the first few years of NTT, Paul Levitz for a long time on LoSH, Mark Waid for Kingdom Come and the first 12 issues of Ruse.
Who are your favorite artists?
George Perez, Jackson Guice, Greg Land, Bryan Hitch, Dave Johnson, John Paul Leon, Dougie Braithwaite, Simon Coleby, Rags Morales, Doug Mahnke.
What are your favorite stories from last year?
Not many. I am not certain it was a vintage year, but then i felt aggreived by the event-cycle the big two are locked into, so objectivity has been thrown out somewhat.
