That is extremmely positive. Thats amazing, he is taking time out for the fans and chatting with them. Um, thats a good thing.
After 5 years of waiting, if that is an extremely positive, amazing, good thing, that's not really saying much, is it? A sorta secret-ish meeting with a handful of fans who don't really seem to want to say much about it...
Compare that to Dark Horse. They get the Gold Key character rights, they hire Jim Shooter, make a big announcement at SDCC, and a year later books coming out.

Pretty much garentee they are more dissappointed.
I don't doubt that at all. I'm sure they're great people with a great love for the properties with great ambitions and great plans. But I get the impression they're so bogged down with planning and strategy and thinking about things, they're not able to actually do anything. Sometimes, you just have to *SQUEE* or get off the pot.
I've been behind them for 5 years. The HCs were exciting. But it was (mostly) reprint material that lead to nothing. I'm not saying they owe me anything. They don't. I'm not obliged to insider information or new books on my schedule. I hold no animosity or negativity toward them. But I don't owe them anything either. I am completely neutral toward them for now. When they put out some books, they'll have my attention. And we'll go from there. Until then, I'm not going to focus on them - positively or negatively.
Well, you're probably right on a lot of things here, but there wasn't a secret meeting. We were at the VALIANTfans.com poker game. I asked Greg (Blood of Heroes) in advance if it would be ok if Dino came to the game with me, and had spoken to Dino and told him it would be a good thing for him to come to. Plus he wanted to play poker, which unfortunately we never got to as I kind of started asking Dinesh questions and then everyone else joined in.
There was no big groundbreaking news to be had there. They are working on hiring a new EIC type person to replace Shooter and it's taken longer to get on track after Shooter left than they thought. The gist was they still want to put out comics in some form as a creative entity and either publish themselves or have someone publish and distribute for them, while also listening to people who are interested in their properties for movies and video games. Jemas left to take another job that was a once in a lifetime offer from a major non comic publisher much to the dismay of VEI, but he was an advisor, not a principle or employee.
There were Shooter questions and based on the wording of the lawsuit you can probably figure the answers and I don't need to write them here, but I think in hindsight they probably wouldn't go the lawsuit route again..
That's about it pretty much, no big secret meeting, no smoke and mirrors, just a bunch of guys who happened to go to Greg's to eat pizza, play VALIANT Jeopardy and Poker.
Thanks for being candid and giving us that weren't there some of the general gist of what was discussed. I think even though a lot of us are feeling negative about the way VEI seems to be handling things, I think almost 100% of us would like to see them succeed in some way, if only so we would see the characters we are all fans of return.
So does anyone know why they quit doing the hardcovers? It was nice to get excited about some sort of release while waiting on the relaunch. I wonder if it was related to why there was such a delay on A&A.
The Valiant discussion sounds like it was cool and reassuring. I still think it'd be nice if he'd make some form of statement here, but I understand why he wouldn't want to.

When you use the "but" in your fancy paragraph there, you negate everything that comes before it. Don't use "but" when trying to make a point. It's weak writing and you undo the points you are trying to make (aka your whole post).

Personally, I would not use the SDCC to launch anything comic related these days. It's passe and been taken mainstream. Glee had a presence there. Seriously. It's COMIC CON. Come on.
There has to be another comic con venue that's true to comics out there. That's where they should go. Then more focus for them. They'd be lost in the sea of all things not comics at the SDCC. Maybe hit the Big Apple con and the DC Con in the fall.

The hardcovers served their purpose. Dino did not put too fine a point on it but I got the impression that they were to raise capital. The fourth hardcover was going to be Shadowman but because Harbinger sold about twice what they expected they did not need to do a Shadowman collection so they didn't.
He did say that new hardcovers will come out some day after the floppies are moving.

Dino said all these things. He would never bother to make an announcement at San Diego because anything said there just gets lost in the crowd.

I don't buy the "lost in the crowd" argument. Dark Horse made an announcement about the GK line last year and it was picked up by various outlets and fans. Marvel hinted about Crossgen this year and it was picked up by various outlets and fans. There’s a lot of coverage at SDCC.
I do buy the “have nothing significant to say” argument hence dino hanging out with VF.com fans during the biggest comic convention weekend rather than mingling with others in the industry.

I also don't buy this. Why stop putting out the hardcovers, that were apparently selling twice as well as expected? The fans wanted them and they were easy revenue.... why stop?!

I know . . . If the purpose of selling HCs was to raise capital, that certainly implies that selling HCs was profitable. Why stop making and selling something that is profitable?
The only logical explanation is that VEI is re-directing resources used in making HCs to something that is MORE profitable.

Whether you buy it or not, that is their opinion. These are all business decisions they are making, some may be good, some may be bad, but they are making decisions based on what they think makes the most sense.
Also, keep in mind that you mentioned announcements from the largest publishers in comics, that are going to get a lot of press for any announcement. People are paying attention to what these publishers are going to say. Marvel and DC just have to make an exciting announcement. VEI has to make an exciting announcement, AND work their butts off to make sure people listen to it.
Do you remember what the big announcements were last year from Boom!, IDW, Archaia, IDW, Aspen, and Top Cow?
I think there are ways an announcement could work at San Diego. I know what I would do, but my idea would be costly.

Dr. Solar pretty much right here in my opinion. DH made the Shooter announcement the highlight of their panel last year and there were several hundred people in the room, maybe over a thousand. VEI has maybe 4 or 5 significant IP's in this market that haven't been exposed for almost 15 years, DH is a large company that has movies, and comics that are currently for sale to talk about. Just not a fair comparison.
BTW, you can probably add Radical, Privateer, and Dynamite to that list. Dynamite had a pretty big presence last year and I don't think they even showed up this year. In some ways you can make an arguement for the small publisher that having a presence at SDCC is a luxury that they might not be able to afford.

I think what probably happened is when it came time to do the next Hardcover (Shadowman) they had Shooter on staff writing and decided to move forward and plan a reboot with a couple of titles. Of course when Shooter left they were pretty much left standing with their *SQUEE* in their hands, and are just starting to recover both finacially and creatively now.
Dino has said he is less than pleased with the quality of the Harbinger and XO hardcovers, but is proud of the A+A Book and the next book would have been just as nice. Obviously Bob Hall would have been the perfect choice for any new material for that book, and when I was in NY a few years ago he expressed that he liked working with Dino and would like to do more.

The question about the hardcovers, is something I would raise. I thought they were good, I am just wondering if they got burnt on the Archer Armstrong one. So left it alone after that

THat is the first time anyone has ever called me fancy
That is seriously, the first time, someone has said fancy paragraph ~ mega bonus 'cause my grammer and spelling is rotten.
Cannot believe I am still a noobie after 5 years bummer. I has hoping for the secret handshake soon, and etry into the 'boy's' club. Maybe next year.
