new cases are garbage
Lots of talk about damage to books slabbed in the new cases, warping, waving books. Newton rings unsightly but don't Hurt books. New cases less desirable and reduce value of slabbed book.

There is some type of problem with ANY method of slab you choose. I have had zero problems with the new holders.nonplayer wrote:Lots of talk about damage to books slabbed in the new cases, warping, waving books. Newton rings unsightly but don't Hurt books. I personally love them... In ALL aspects.
They present WAY better compared too the old slabs.
They are WAY clearer than the old slabs.
They are more sturdy.
They are thicker.
No more top label sticker problem. (Which I HATED on the old slab)
Stack well.
Would rather drop a new one than an old one... I'll tell you that much
Until I see visible proof of these slabs damaging the books... I'm in camp "New Slab"
That is coming from someone who has probably had a minimum of 2000 slabs pass thru his hands.

Re: new cases are garbage
I only have one in the new case. It was fine when I received it, other than some of the Newton rings and pressure points that (as I understand it) only effect how the books present. When I look at it again last night, there are noticeable waves on this modern 9.8. Either they weren't there when I received it or I didn't notice it. They are there though.
Not trying to spread hysteria, but the complaints are legitimate, at least on some books. Perhaps the process has been corrected by now?

I've been keeping up on the news at

And there is defedently a problem and I've seen definitive proof if you got a bunch of new cases have a re look a close examination and get back to us. You said you got new slabs go see the evidence and compare with yours. I'm very worried about this and I don't do slabs let alone a bunch of them. I just got a few books done and yes my Harby 8 has a wave on the top. it didn't when I sent it and it graded at an 9.8 so "evidence"
My first books slabbed and their's talk of the cases ruining your books.
I don't care about the rings.

Re: new cases are garbage
I love the design, appearance, and feel of the new CGC holders.
I have noticed a few of my recent new slabs have the comic inside at a tilted angle (not centered) that triggered my OCD, which triggered my desire to repeatedly tap the corner of the stab(s) in a futile effort to correctly re-position the comic inside to make me happy.
I think that we will soon see CGC make a few "adjustments" to their current product, and I'm all for it as long as the current model is improved. The rings are not an issue (to me) but likely a minor gripe that has gained traction due to other vocal issues from a large group of angry collectors.
Again, I feel it was a positive move by CGC to develop these new holders, and look forward to seeing how they evolve.

Re: new cases are garbage
I agree with DBS. I think CGC will have to make adjustments to the case. I think they've been slow to respond, which isn't good.
CBCS is offering a 20% discount to re-grade and hence re-holder any books graded by CGC after the swtich to the new case. Steve B is offering this discount because he's concerned about long term preservation of the comic. While I believe Steve cares about the hobby, I also believe this is an opportunity for CBCS to gain market share since many aren't happy with the new CGC holders.
I personally think that CGC will square away the issue and then the new holder will be recognized as far superior to the old one. Of course we may see buyers unwilling to buy new CGC holders graded before the date CGC makes holder adjustments.
Time will tell.
I have a few new holder CGC slabs, and none of mine are showing any of the issues such as waviness and newton rings. I understand the concern about the waviness, but not the newton rings. I have several old case CGC slabs where the inner well is making contact with the outer well causing a similar "newton ring". No one is jumping up and down about those issues
Yes, all three of my new CGC case books are in my signature. I'll be very *SQUEE* if the new cases damage 3 of my VEI gold books, although I think it's highly unlikely.

Re: new cases are garbage
The newton rings problem can be seen with books like this one. Believe it or not, the edges of the paper are solid white without a speck of dirt or staining. All the discoloration is from the inner holder pressing against the outer holder.

Re: new cases are garbage
Jury is still out for me. There are lots of things I don't love about the new cases, and lots of things I do. The discoloration is a huge issue for me as a reseller. Take Solar 10 for example. I've had 1 9.6 returned to me 3 times by 3 different buyers because it didn't "show well." The showing well issue is that you have a black book and the oily discoloration is more prevalent. I take this more than just buyer's remorse on price or other factors. If it's really an issue with getting a fabulous book, than nobody wants to see these "newton rings." Case in point is the SW book that Greg posted.
The cases are heavier, don't stack as well and are a bit unwieldy if you are holding several. They don't look uniform with the old cases. These are things I can generally live with. However, if there are substantive safety issues with the books, that's another story.
I'm looking at these 4 new cases that came in yesterday and there is definitely an oily look that doesn't exist on the old cases.

Re: new cases are garbage
Interesting situation. I'm not sure what was wrong with the old cases. Takes breaking eggs to make an omelet. You would think they would have tested these out 1000s of times before going to market. I don't think they were in jeopardy of losing much market share to CBCS staying pat, and growth wasn't an issue either.

Re: new cases are garbage
I have an Invincible Iron Man #1 (2015) 9.8 in the new holder right next to me as I type this.
Pros
The label sticker on the top edge is finally encapsulated. Many of my original CGC stickers simply come off, but now it's not a problem
The actual case dimensions are smaller and more compact - more closely resembling a PGX case, which is a good thing because regardless of the integrity issues discussed about PGX, their case is really nice
Cons
The label sticker on the top doesn't feature a volume # or volume year. It only says "Invincible Iron Man #1", which really is a huge lack of information when trying to use that label to find a book as we live in the age of reboots with 7 or more standing "volumes" of a book like Invincible Iron Man #1.
Newton Rings. It's true. This book has them on the back cover, and in the most obnoxious fashion near the lower staple, which is also manifesting an issue exactly as described by Steve from CBCS in his post.
The book appears to be secured in the case only by compression from the clasping of the front and back of the shell rather than any inner tab securing the book. With that said, I hope that CGC never has a manufacturing problem where their case maker doesn't use a batch of non-archival plastic.

Re: new cases are garbage
It does tell you quickly which portions of the book are getting the most pressure.
The four corners and the spine at the staples are clearly the points pushing hardest on the outer holder, because they are pressure points with the clearest view of the book. Newton rings are like a pressure point "heat map".

I'm not too surprised by that and I personally don't read too much into it. The moment I saw the new cases I wondered how they could ever fit a TPB in there.DirtbagSailor wrote:Just got three slabbed TPB's back from CGC today.

I'm not too worried about the new cases even after reading about some of people's issues, but that is probably only because the books I go after generally are not older or restored books. I will be carefully watching every slab to make sure though.
As of right now I have a small stack in the new holder and I am very happy with them.
