Summer of Valiant 2017 - What would you like to see?
I like speculating on Valiant titles - what their direction will be with new/re-branded/revived titles. We know Shadowman and XO are on the way in 2017 so that's a solid starting point imo for the Summer of Valiant 2017 (non x-over event). Here's what my predictions (or rather wish-list is) for 2017:
ONGOING TITLES:
1. XO Manowar #1 (I hope we don't see a spin on the title, and as much as I'd like to see #51, I get why they would market the series return with a shiny new #1 issue).
2. Shadowman #1 (volume 2 of Shadowman doesn't need a title spin imo - I think enough water has passed under the bridge from the previous series to 2017).
3. Unity Reunited #1 (Unity as a concept was cool but it just didn't read as a 'team book', I had thought Valiant may go down the route of Secret Weapons post Unity, however many of their books still reference Unity long into the future timelines - Ank, Neela, Livewire, Gin-Gr, Malgam could all feature - also gives Valiant a nice little placeholder for lesser characters and those in-between series)
Mini's
4. Deadside Blues #1 (of 4) (There is so much potential in this series. Having read the Acclaim Shadowman, I'd love to see a horror / noir mash-up that explores the inner workings of the Deadside)
5. Psi-Lords #1 (of 4) (teased in the 2016 FCBD, I think this would be a nice mini to expand the universe)
One-Shots
6. Rai #0 (I believe this has been hinted by Dinesh on twitter (at lease the hashtag has))
7. Ninjak #0 (the only long running series we've yet to see a #0 issue for, hopefully it serves as a bridge perhaps between #25 and #26????)

Hmm, summer of 2017. Ninjak will likely be ending, and probably Bloodshot Reborn too. I'm guessing Wrath of the Eternal Warrior will end in fewer than 25 due to sales, so that will probably be gone too. If that leaves 3 openings for ongoings, here's my wishlist:
Ongoing:
-Shadowman!!!!! Obviously I'm biased, but this is the only top-tier Valiant character that has been on the shelf for any period of time. I meet more people that name Shadowman as their favorite Valiant character than any other character, except maybe Faith in recent years.
-X-O Manowar (I actually think this could wait a little longer, but since he's the flagship character, I think X-O will be back sooner rather than later.)
-Unity/Secret Weapons/team book: really for no other reason than to feature more characters that would otherwise be left out in the cold.
Mini-series:
-Punk Mambo or Punk Mambo/Ninjak team-up: P.M.'s one-shot was great and I really her and Ninjak as a duo in Operation: Deadside! Maybe something tying in with Shadowman. I'm sure the Abettors are up to something shady, probably trying to change Master Darque back from tree form (THEY TURNED HIM INTO A *SQUEE* TREE!?)...or at least giving him a nice pruning and maybe some fertilizer.
-H.A.R.D.Corps: time for some more Charlie Palmer up in this joint!
One-shots:
- Livewire: Love this character, I'm really pleased that she's gotten as much use as she has, but it's time for her to headline her own book!
- GIN-GR: One of the most endearing characters VEI has created. I want more!
- Sunlight on Snow/Mech Major: (see GIN-GR)

I don't want to see Imperium abandoned. If they really need a summer event we should see more Pete and Toyo going at it.

Regarding the Rai #0 tweet from Dinesh - is it not probable that he's just referencing what Layton had done for Valiant in the past, and NOT announcing a new book?
I reread the tweet, and I think we're reading too much in to it.

I'd like to see a big Event. I mean huge. Bigger in scope than Armor Hunters, something that touches on all apescts of the Valiant U.

Xo ManOwar or his daughters story.
They can continue with the events in your imperium
Back stories of Gin-Gr
I don't really care what they put out but anything written by Dysart.
I would also like to see a savage ongoing. There is a lack of dinosaurs on the wendsday shelves.

A Kindt-less / Lemire-less soft reboot.

Me too, a Unity (90's) - like major event would be cool that spawns a couple of ongoings and makes the universe feel connected again.Keith wrote:I'd like to see a big Event. I mean huge. Bigger in scope than Armor Hunters, something that touches on all apescts of the Valiant U.

Re: Summer of Valiant 2017 - What would you like to see?
I think I am down for a Shadowman type of summer book. Then again, maybe a winter type of thing would be better.
This book needs to be dark, biting, gnarly, and vicious just like the worst winters.
If they got it right, imagine cold nights and the only warmth is the evil inside the Shadow Man books...
Either way, I think I would like to see something just a little different, darker, something not yet seen.
Maybe a birth of Master Darque 4 part??

Re: Summer of Valiant 2017 - What would you like to see?
Hmm... After a little thought I would say that Shadowman and X-O Manowar are a must. I wouldn't be surprised if we got a "psiot event," seeing as we'll have three different (four, if you count Archer) ongoings starring psiots by that point, and none of them star Harada.
What about a Livewire/SoS/GIN-GR team-up mini-series!?GammaJosh wrote: One-shots:

I want one too, but I just don't think the summer of 2017 would be the right time. In order to do a large-scale event like that, you need a good chunk of strong core ongoings to prop it up. When May 2017 rolls around we'll (probably/hopefully) only have Gen. Zero, Faith, Renegades, Bloodshot, and maybe A&A. Even if X-O and Shadowman come back, those series will be in their infancy, and I wouldn't want them ruined like any number of Marvel series nowadays.Keith wrote:I'd like to see a big Event. What even is the Valiant U without Kindt and Lemire? Can you imagine a universe without Divinity, Unity, The Valiant, Ninjak, Rai, or Bloodshot Reborn? I, for one, and more apprehensive about the new (and returning) talent like Rafer Roberts, Jody Houser, Peter Milligan, and B. Clay Moore. Hopefully they can live up to the solid foundation that people like Matt Kindt and Jeff Lemire built for them.Tim wrote:A Kindt-less / Lemire-less soft reboot.

Readable.TheFerg714 wrote:What even is the Valiant U without Kindt and Lemire?
Divinty is utter garbage. The Valiant started and ended well, but there'll always be that third issue...yeesh..... Rai never grabbed me and needs a new artist. Ninkak and Bloodshot Reborn are formulaic hack-works. Just going through the motions. Both feel like they were just generic framework stories that you could throw almost any character into and make it fly. Kind of like Dead Drop. You can't tell me that Dead Drop wasn't a pitch to Marvel or another publisher that got shot down and shopped around until Valiant picked it up. Lemire's Bloodshot stuff feels the same way.TheFerg714 wrote:Can you imagine a universe without Divinity, Unity, The Valiant, Ninjak, Rai, or Bloodshot Reborn?
I'm skeptical about eveybody but Hauser, but yeah I agree here too. I think I'm the VEI equivalent of Knob Row. I sold all my VEI books except for the X-O run, Harbinger, Bloodshot and A&A's first 25 issues and I choose to believe it ended there on a high note. Kind of like some folks do with pre-Unity. In my mind Armor Hunters is the VEI equivalent of Unity (the culmination of the universe building that Venditi, Dysart and Van Lente did), The Valiant was the equivalent of Chaos Effect (had ok moments, but foreshadowed how sh!tty things were to become) and Book of Death is the equivalent of Birthquake (show's over folks)TheFerg714 wrote:I, for one, and more apprehensive about the new (and returning) talent like Rafer Roberts, Jody Houser, Peter Milligan, and B. Still nothing but love for Dinesh and VEI. They're still my first stop to say hi to at cons and I hope they are successful, but the books just aren't the books I want to read anymore.

Bloodhound in his own comic. A take from the 1980's show littlest hobo. "Hoboshot"
This could be geared towards kids. And I can give them out at Halloween.
Seriously this is a brilliant idea.

Re: Summer of Valiant 2017 - What would you like to see?
Ideas I'd love to see:
1) A crossover of all their magic characters (Shadowman, Punk Mambo, the Doctors Mirage) to build up that world a bit, like theyou did for 4001. They could face off against a resurrected Master Darque, the Shadow Seven, or maybe the villain that will be introduced in Brittania. I'd love to see a "Unity Dark" book (as Martin Ferretti has mentioned a few times) come out of the crossover.
2) I think that the end of Ivar, Timewalker could lead into a big crossover, and it might be an opportunity to re-tell the original Unity event from VH1. It could be a good way to integrate the new characters (Savage, Brittania, etc) with the more established characters.

Re: Summer of Valiant 2017 - What would you like to see?
I just can't get behind all the Shadowman love. The first attempt at Shadowman in VEI was so bad. I actually retread a few issues about a month ago...they were near laughable. I also did not like the a Shadowman stuff in ninjak. I do love me some Dr. Mirage though. If valiant takes another shot at Shadowman, that's fine, but I hope their summer event is not tied to him.
