Valiant Magnus that wasn't

Met Jeff Johnson today at a con in Stockholm. He said that he and Keith Giffen had planned a revamp of Magnus. Unfortunately none of the concept art remains.

Very cool, thanks for sharing! I wonder if that was planned for after Vh1, but then Nicieza decided to go with the Tom Peyer/Mike Mckone version instead? I thought Giffen's short run on Magnus had some cool ideas, would've been interesting to see what they would've done with a revamp.

Is that a Spider Alien on there?

Sure looks like it. Generally feels like art that could belong with early VH1, but Heritage assumes it's from after Unity 2000. I don't know what to think.

Whoa, that's cool never seen that one.

My guess is the description is correct. This was going to be the Magnus series directly after Unity 2000. The robot designs are different and the spider alien robots make it feel like a blended Valiant continuity rather than VH1 proper.

Also Starlin was very busy at Marvel during the early 90s. So awesome, would love to see more of this.

Fan comission maybe?

Feels more like a story page. A commission would usually have a well known character shown prominently.

If you look at the second image, which is a full scan of the page, you can see it was made on Acclaim branded Bristol board. The Acclaim logo is from that era and the paper itself is dated as 1998. Most definitely this had some connection to Unity 2000 or the follow-up. It's even titled as Magnus 1 page 2 on the board.

I looked for that stuff earlier and didn't see it. I see it now. The copyright is on the lower left-hand corner on the first page. I thought earlier I was looking at the first page, but now I see I wasn't. The second does have more information.

It'll be interesting if page 1 or any other pages surface. The post-U2K VH3 missing link :)

That's from the Sotomayor proposal.

I can be sure about this piece of art as I picked it up from the artist and it's hanging on my wall now.

Nice. The Sotomayor/Clauretie pitch says its from 2002 (seems like yesterday  ). Also it was not part of Valiant because at that time Acclaim had already gone belly-up and the Gold Key licenses had reverted back to whoever owned them.

Unity 2000 #3 came out in January 2000, and Starlin/Rubinstein had already finished all the way to #6 when it was cancelled, so they must have worked way ahead.

That means this Magnus issue was probably being drawn in late 1999 early 2000 when the cancellation came down. I would've loved to see Shooter/Starlin on VH3 Magnus :)

Between those 2 versions (possibly in late 2000 after U2K was cancelled and before Acclaim lost the Gold Key licenses) there was also the James Perham VH3 reboot concept that I think had yet another different version of a VH3 Magnus. I don't think any art was produced or has ever surfaced from that.
