I've decided to send some books in to be graded (CGC).
The ones I chose are,

Unity Red
EW Gold flat
EW Gold embossed
and Silver age Flash #109

Good choice in books?

Just make sure you look them over with an "anal retentive" characteristic

Good luck with that EW flat. Maybe you'll get the first 9.8. That might be worth a lot.

What kind of shape is the Flash in?

The Flash is in great shape.
No creases or dog ears, nice square corners, no stains discoloring on the cover or interior, spine has only minor cracks or stress, no rust on the staples, pages are not white but not yellow like a cream color

Seems like CGC is tough on most of the DCs for some reason. Most of my old Flash books have foxing along the edges. No clue why that's more prevalent on DCs than Marvels.

Let us know how you do on those.

light yellowish brown spots on the books - usually in clusters toward the edges of the books. Almost looks like mildew, but I don't really think it's the same. If your books have it, you'll know it. If you didn't notice anything, I'm sure you don't have that problem.

Nice lot of books, especially that Flash issue - quite ancient. Best of luck with them

CGC is going to have abooth at the NY Con in march. Like what they did at the Philly Con, you bring the books and they'll grade them there.

I felt this would be safer then if I mailed them, and cheaper.

I dont think that you can do onsite grading, but you can give them your books in person and have them mailed back to you...and I am fairly sure that onsite grading isnt cheaper than sending it in the mail...

Sure but I dont think that you can use any of the discounts...basically 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other...

Not that I have ever had any books graded, but I am glad that they have stopped doing onsite grading since they didnt have the equpiment to encapsulate both onsite and inhouse..which means that books sitting in the cgc office sat there until they got back from shows...which means that they were double booking their time.

They haven't stopped doing on-site, if you go to their calendar of events, it tells you when and where they are doing it. I had it done at WWPhilly last June and the cost was $22 per modern book (as compared to the mail in rate of $12.80 plus shipping and insurance (required for return shipping from CGC and prudent when sending your books there). Figure it's still cheaper to mail them in, but not by much. However the instantaneous gratification aspect of on-site makes up for the increased costs (at least to me it does).

That being said, I missed on site at the National show here in NYC last November and so I sent off a batch of books two weeks ago that I expect to see around the second week of Feb. Including a Harby 0 pink and a Harby 1!

Not bad, I thought I might have one of those elusive 9.8 Harby 1's here, close but no cigar....and the Pink DOES have that upper left spine corner defect that is common to them, a printing defect that is not downgraded apparently....

Thanks Chris! I was pleased overall with the other books I sent in as well, just a small modern batch. Those are the easiest to grade, if you see a defect, you're not getting at least a 9.6 is the criteria I use. I sent in a Conan 275 (tough dark cover, last issue, giant-sized) and was hoping a tiny tear at the bottom spine was a bindery defect, but it came back 9.4 so I guess it was a handling tear. Oh well, had a buyer lined up for 9.6 or better too, shoot!
