Worst Valiant Writer?

Post by Heath »

So who do you think was the worst writer for Valiant? I'm talking strictly the "VH1" years. And I'm not saying these guys are bad writers overall (I may think that, but I'm not making that claim here). They may have even had a few bright spots at Valiant, but some of what they wrote for Valiant (or most/all of it) stank. Some much more so than others.

I'm sure there are some other names I'm missing.

My vote goes to Mike Baron. Every book he wrote for Valiant is pretty much unreadable. No exceptions. I'd almost say Ron Marz, but he was mainly limited to destroying XO. Mike Baron touched a lot more titles. I actually dreaded reading a book he wrote before I even opened the cover.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

He also did a number on Green Lantern (I know, not Valiant, but I'm still not a big Ron Marz fan).

Some of the names on the list I would consider for best writers. Or maybe a better way to put it would be most reliable writer. Valiant had several writers who may not have been superstars, but wo cared for the characters they wrote.

I would say Ron Marz. He screwed with 2 of my favorite characters - X-O Manowar and Green Lantern (I know - DC, but I DO read other books too ya know). :thumb:

I voted for Baron as I thought his A&A was atrocious. Though on retrospect, I might've voted for Marz. His treatment of X-O single-handedly destroyed Valiant's flagship title.

You guys are giving Ron Marz a bad time but remember he only wrote X-O from #44-50, most of the really bad stuff came after he left.

I actually like a lot of the stuff Baron did, his A&A wasn't the best but he was in a tough spot following BWS. His Turok, Ninjak and Magnus/Nexus stick out as good. Hard Corps not so good.

While it's true that Marz only wrote 7 issues of Valiant's Flagship title....it was those issues (the blueprint) that reduced X-O to a toilet read. Not one writer saved the title after what Marz did to him in only those 7 issues.

There might be a few writers that didn't even make this list but Marz seriouly flushed X-O to the point of NO return.

Since I hang out with Baron regularly, he will be the first to tell you NO ONE could follow BWS with the british whimsy that BWS pulled off. If you read Baron's yearbooks, they are rock solid!

Also, something that no one knows about A&A, If you read the first 12 books, they actually take place in about 2-3 weeks. One adventure leads to another, so once BWS left the book, it was everyone elses responsibility to bring the book up to speed in continuity as it was behind by a year! BWS, Perham and Baron have all conveyed this to me!

I've have to give a thumbs down to the "writing" on X-O Manowar by Bart Sears. Those issues right after issue#50 were all huge splash pages and little dialogue. Not my cup of tea.

Those are the ones!

"He must be gay, no straight would parade around like that."

Y'know, he could have just asked BEFORE the radical alterations.
I've never seen such a stupid premise for the creation of a supervillian.

That was one pathetic bad guy. A great example of the kind of crap comic book writers can get away with when they become more important than the character.

Asking yourself how such an idea got approved, the only answer can be "Jurgens came up with it, and since he killed Superman and made lots of money for DC he can do no wrong".

I actually kinda liked his first storyarc, the one where Solar oversees an alternate earth's development. On the other hand, I prefer Jurgens' THOR and SENSATIONAL BEN REILLY SPIDER-MAN over the Solar arc anyway.

It's hard for a good writer to get off a bad editoral direction. On the other hand, it's hard for a weak editor to steer a hot talent in the right direction. Looks like a mix of both on this list but I'ld say the former destroyed Valiant before the later even happened.

And on Ron Marz Green Lantern...do you guys hate the events of Emerald Dawn or the way he handled Kyle afterwards? Emerald Dawn was plotted by numerious DC editors (Denny O'Neil, ect) who decided to get rid of Hal by turning him into a villian and the plotline was only SCRIPTED by Marz. Now if you dislike 51 and 'til the end of his run, then that's supposedly pure Marz writing (though obviously DC didn't want Jordan to return as GL at that time).

I disliked what he AFTER issue #51 personally. I don't mind other Green Lanterns and I really like Guy Gardner so it was not the "new" lantern thing.

Emerald Dawn was Jordan's Post Crisis origin.

Emerald Twilight is the story Marz wrote.
